Aunt Lian panicked, "Your family, oh dear! Your family has a wedding procession. The girl says she's your family's new bride, surnamed Huang."
Upon hearing this, Su's mother was furious. "She still has the nerve to come here? Do you think I'm afraid of her?"
He picked up his hoe and walked away, saying, "Let's go home."
Liu Huan and Xiao Shi followed behind, carrying bags of chili peppers. They shook the bags, and the chili peppers fell everywhere.
Su Yi followed behind, picking up the items as he went.
Before we even arrived, we could hear the sound of gongs and drums outside the Su family's house from afar. As we got closer, we saw a red sedan chair.
The area was surrounded by villagers from Maocao Village, pointing and whispering, seemingly talking about something.
When the Su family returned, they all gathered around, saying, "Da Nian's family is here! Come and see what happened."
Father Su coldly observed the wedding procession in the courtyard and asked in a deep voice, "What are you doing?"
The matchmaker, dressed in festive clothes, fidgeted and said, "Oh dear, Master Su, you must have forgotten that today is the wedding day of your eldest son."
"But it doesn't matter if you forgot, I've already brought it over."
Before Su's father could even speak, Su's mother's anger flared up. "Pah! A bunch of heartless bastards! No one like you can just walk into the Su family's door!"
When Miss Huang heard this in the bridal sedan chair, her face turned terribly gloomy. Sure enough, they knew.
Su's mother continued, "Go back to where you came from. Our Su family is not a refugee camp."
...
After learning about this that day, Su's parents prepared to go to the Huang family, but Su Yi stopped them, saying, "Mother, let's not go. It's no use going now. Let's go back to the village first."
Su's mother didn't understand: "Are we just going to let it go like this? Your older brother was almost ruined."
Liu Huan knew what he meant. After all, they couldn't win the argument by taking medicine. "Mother, Shi Tou has his own plans. The Huang family is using us as scapegoats. Let's just wait and see what happens when she gets pregnant."
"But today is the day for the wedding ceremony. If we don't go today, they might come knocking on our door soon."
Liu Huan said, "Don't be afraid, let's go back to the village. I don't believe she'll be shameless enough to come to the village again. We'll settle things with them properly when Shi Tou's exam results come out in a few days."
And so, the family packed up and returned to the village. But Liu Huan never expected that the woman would dare to come in a bridal sedan chair on that very day.
The matchmaker objected, "Oh, Madam Su, how can you slander someone like that? She's only ever been in contact with your eldest son. Even if she has, it's with your eldest son."
Only then did Da Shi realize that the two of them were being so shameless, and he angrily picked up a hoe and walked towards her.
The matchmaker was so frightened that she quickly hid behind the thugs.
"What are you doing? Are you angry and embarrassed? You touched that girl and you're not going to take responsibility. Don't think that just because you have a scholar in your family, you can bully people at will."
The villagers who were unaware of the situation immediately denied it, saying, "Impossible. We know Da Shi's character; he would never be irresponsible."
"That's right, how could people from our Maocao Village be bad?"
"I guess they were tricked by the Huang family."
Da Shi was honest and grateful for these words, but he just stared at the bridal sedan chair with his eyes wide open and his hands clenched tightly without saying a word.
"What are you doing?"
My uncle came over after receiving the news. He frowned when he saw the crowd in the yard. "Who's causing trouble here?"
The matchmaker swayed over and said, "You must be the village chief. I'm here on behalf of Master Huang to bring his niece here."
"Why send it here? Is it because you can't get married?"
When Su's father returned that day, he went to talk to Su's uncle about the matter.
"That's not how it works. If Su's eldest son hadn't offended Miss Huang and then denied it, why would she have come knocking on our door?"
"Master Su, you'd better open the door quickly and welcome the bride in, or we'll miss the auspicious time."
"Pah! You piece of junk, you think you can get into my house? Get out of here right now, or I'll call the authorities."
The sedan curtain was lifted, and Miss Huang, dressed in a red wedding gown, came out. She lifted her red veil halfway, her face covered in tears and pain.
"Brother Da Shi, how can you be so irresponsible? Don't you even want your child anymore?"
Da Shi's face flushed red with anger. "I...I didn't touch you."
Miss Huang approached him regardless of everything, "Have you forgotten? That day at the Huang family, you asked me to go..."
"Where did you go? Tell me. See if I remember you?"
Liu Huan couldn't stand it anymore; it was utterly outrageous, like a mother opening a door for something completely absurd.
"Or, let me tell you a story."
"There was a shameless woman who, after coming of age, couldn't wait to have an affair with her aunt's cousin, thinking she could marry into a wealthy family. Little did she know, the cousin was just playing around. He made an excuse to go back and said he would come back for her later, and then he never returned. A month later, the woman became pregnant with her cousin's child."
"For the sake of her and her beloved cousin's child, she did not hesitate to find an honest family, hoping to raise the child with the help of their family."
As Liu Huan spoke, she walked step by step towards her, "If you don't want people to know, then don't do it in the first place, Miss Huang, what do you say?"
Miss Huang, true to her reputation as someone who dared to taste the forbidden fruit before marriage, remained completely calm.
“I don’t know what my sister is talking about. I have never had contact with any men outside of my family all these years. The only one I have had contact with is Brother Da Shi.”
The steward of the wealthy Huang family led his thugs to the front, carrying tools in their hands.
"Someone, open the door for me."
Although the villagers complained, they dared not stand idly by and watch the Su family's property be vandalized. Firstly, they relied on the Su family for their livelihood. Secondly, if the village could be bullied so easily, wouldn't the village be utterly useless?
They all ran to the door and blocked it, saying, "Don't go too far."
The butler looked fierce: "Hmph, you think you can just deny it after bullying the Huang family's daughter? You'll have to marry her today, whether you like it or not."
Before the two sides could even start fighting, another group of people arrived from outside—the town's soldiers.
"Excuse me, is this the home of Su Yi, the top investigator?"
Everyone turned around, and unconsciously hid what they were holding behind their backs.
Su Yi put down the knife in his hand, walked over and clasped his hands in greeting: "Student Su Yi greets all esteemed officials."
The leader quickly returned the greeting, "No, no, by the way, I haven't congratulated Scholar Su on being the top student in the county yet."
The Huang family looked grim, while the villagers were relieved that they hadn't spoken ill of the Su family earlier.
Seeing everyone's tense posture with swords drawn, the leading officer smiled and asked, "What's wrong with Scholar Su?"
Su Yi: "Now that you are here, sir, please do justice for the Su family."
Su Yi took the initiative to explain the whole story, and concluded by saying, "Although our Su family is not a wealthy family, we still value propriety and integrity."
“I don’t have the habit of casually becoming your father, and that’s why this has caused a commotion.”
The steward of the Huang family turned ashen-faced: "Sir, I am the steward of the Huang family. In this matter, my young lady is the victim. Please, sir, see the truth."
"Hmph, that's no reason for you to cause trouble here. Since Scholar Su has spoken, then you'll have to come with me!"
