Chapter 100 Returning to the City

Jiang Wan fell silent. Indeed, if her suspicions were true, then many of the world's perceptions might be overturned.

Were they frightened?

Cheng Zhen asked, wanting to stay by her side, so he leaned against the RV, bent one leg and crossed it over the other. He wanted to reach into his pocket for a cigarette, but then he thought that in this godforsaken environment there wasn't even any oxygen, so smoking was no better than dreaming, and he had to give up.

"Thank goodness." The twins were stronger than she had imagined, and her quick reaction should have ensured that the two little ones did not witness the bloody scene.

They had already collected the zombie's body; after all, he was a former brother, and they planned to take him back to Xiangcheng for a cryogenic burial.

It was getting late, and Jiang Wan turned around and got into the car to go to sleep, extinguishing his peaceful aura. Cheng Zhen suddenly felt extremely irritable.

But what could he do? Everyone was about to go to sleep, and he couldn't very well force himself to squeeze back onto the bus, could he?

It's fine during the day, but at night, he figured she'd be able to get him a taxi!

He let out a heavy sigh. Oh well, he still had to keep an eye on those four people tonight; he had a feeling they were very dangerous.

"how's it going?"

Cheng Zhen jumped into his off-road vehicle, took off his oxygen mask, and asked while chewing dry compressed biscuits. He was really missing the dinner he had gotten in the RV not long ago, but unfortunately, he hadn't eaten enough.

Yu Fen wasn't as lucky as him; he could only chew on compressed biscuits, then gulp down a mouthful of water and swallow, saying:

“Pingjiang had someone boil a pot of strong herbal juice made from the herbs of the Hundred-Petal Herb, and gave each of the four people two large bowls of it. They were all tied to the tree trunk, and it seems that several people were assigned to take turns guarding them.”

"You go and keep an eye on things later." Cheng Zhen said, then felt uneasy, "Never mind, I'll go myself. You guys hurry up and collect the supplies. Have you finished harvesting the wheat?"

"That's about it. This valley is a huge farmland village. The land stretches out in large tracts. I reckon we can harvest a plot by the middle of the night. I just don't know what it is. Just the rice and wheat we harvested should be enough to supply Xiangcheng for a month!"

"Eat sparingly, two months is fine." Actually, there are granaries in the city, but they are not open.

Cheng Zhen instructed, "Collecting the grain is important, but be careful. Stay within the area I've designated for you and don't go outside."

Outside of his purification range, there were mutated plants. It wasn't that they couldn't deal with the mutated plants, but that would slow down the harvesting speed.

Their primary goal now is to collect the grain and then return to the city!

The longer you stay in the wilderness, the greater the danger!

Yu Fen nodded and asked, "Boss, do you think this Hundred-Petal Grass can really cure the poison they got from being bitten by zombies?"

"I hope so."

If it really works, then their personnel losses can be greatly reduced.

Cheng Zhen put away the leftover compressed biscuits and jumped out of the car.

After taking the medicine, the four people seemed to be in good spirits for the time being, as if they had seen a glimmer of hope for life. Their eyes were no longer dull, and they even said they were hungry, each eating two compressed biscuits.

But just over an hour later, they were hungry again, and they were very anxious, looking extremely desperate.

"Hurry up and give me something to eat, I'm so hungry! I'm starving!"

"I want to eat! I want to eat!"

"Hurry up! What are you dawdling for!"

"I want food! Give it to me now! Bring it here!"

Cheng Zhen remained perched in a tree not far away, his gaze occasionally drifting towards the RV, wondering what had happened to the woman that made her forget about him.

Hearing their commotion, he withdrew his gaze and stared at them warily.

The young soldier on guard was puzzled: "Didn't we just give you two pieces?"

Another person nearby muttered, "Yeah, look at us workers, we only get one compressed biscuit per meal, that's the rule, how could you forget?"

But the four men wouldn't listen at all. Their hands were tied behind their backs, so they couldn't move and could only shake their heads incessantly. Their movements were so violent that they were about to knock off their oxygen masks!

The two guards got impatient: "Hey, what are you doing? What's the rush? You're hungry, we're hungry too. Why don't you have any patience?"

One of them, being slightly kind, wanted to go over and help them put their crooked oxygen masks back on.

The moment he reached out to them, the four men suddenly changed color, their eyes turned bloodshot, they struggled violently, and then opened their mouths to bite!

Fortunately, they all had oxygen masks on their faces, and the young soldier reacted quickly and retreated, thus avoiding being bitten.

"Changed! It's mutated!"

But in that instant, he was still terrified, and in the dead of night, his scream of terror rang out!

The battlefield, where everyone was carrying out their duties in an orderly manner to rush the harvest, was once again bustling with activity.

Cheng Zhen then jumped down from the tree, looked at Pingjiang and the others who had rushed over upon hearing the news, and concluded: "They have mutated."

Pingjiang and the others still couldn't believe it, but the four men had completely lost their minds. The more people gathered around, the stronger the smell of human flesh and blood became, which drove them even crazier.

This appearance is indeed a mutation.

Pingjiang was heartbroken and could not bear it any longer, so he had no choice but to draw his gun and personally end the lives of his brothers!

For a moment, the entire camp fell into a deathly silence, and everyone held their breath.

This result shows that being bitten by a zombie is tantamount to a death sentence!

Cheng Zhen seized the opportunity and said, "Turn on more lights. Everyone work in groups of three, two to kill and one to keep watch. If you encounter any more zombies, just take them out! Everyone be alert!"

Jiang Wan, who was asleep, heard four gunshots and roughly guessed the outcome. She turned over, tucked the blankets around the two sleeping children, and then fell into a deep sleep.

A sense of crisis spurred everyone to speed up the harvest. After the wheat came large fields of potatoes, followed by vegetable and fruit orchards. Whatever was edible, they harvested it all.

After that, they also harvested peanuts, corn, and broad beans.

They didn't encounter any more zombies during that time, but they did encounter mutated crops several times. However, these crops weren't very powerful, and the farmers simply strangled them and took the crystals.

After a week of continuous harvesting, their 180-plus men had completely cleaned up all the farmland in the valley below the mountain.

Cheng Zhen finally breathed a sigh of relief and discussed with Captains Pingjiang and Zhang Yu: "Can we finally go back to the city?"

They've been out for a long time!

Everyone is working under such high pressure, only getting two or three hours of rest a day, and they can't take it anymore!

Pingjiang asked Battalion Commander Liu for instructions, and Liu replied directly, "Come back, we can't hold out much longer here either."

Cheng Zhen was also listening, and frowned as he asked, "Is it that the Hundred-Petal Grass is ineffective? Is the plague still not under control?"

"The situation with the plague is still unclear. Medicine is being sent to the city every day, but the number of refugees gathering at the city gate is increasing day by day. The brothers in our two camps haven't slept for several days!"
