Chapter 56 No Mercy

Cheng Zhen instantly fired a laser, and a scream was heard from someone in the crowd.

The crowd dispersed in all directions from him.

He had long noticed that someone was hiding in the student group, stirring up trouble and inciting the teachers and students to cause trouble.

He was a short boy, thin and small. Cheng Zhen's blow hit his shoulder directly, leaving a bloody hole. He was clutching his shoulder with one hand, blood seeping from between his fingers. He was trembling all over, looking really miserable and pitiful.

Cheng Zhen stood tall, his gaze cold and sharp, his aura compelling: "Do you think it should be paid for or not?"

Upon hearing this, the boy trembled and cowered, unable to utter a single word.

The students were terrified, and one teacher stood up and said, "How can your city guards injure people so easily?"

"Anyone who obstructs the city guards from carrying out their mission will be killed without mercy!" Cheng Zhen's cold and domineering voice echoed in everyone's ears.

He seized upon a typical example, successfully suppressing all the restless thoughts within everyone.

Pingjiang strongly disapproved of his actions and couldn't help but lecture and educate him afterwards.

Cheng Zhen frowned, clearly annoyed: "So what do they want? Can't you see they're just stalling for time?"

"Ha, where were those guys when I was fighting the mutated plants to the death? Now that we've wiped them out, they're trying to get a piece of the pie!"

"Captain Ping, don't tell me you didn't even understand this situation, did you?"

His words and expression showed little respect for his superior.

Pingjiang remained silent. Of course he knew that it was the inner city guards who were causing trouble, but he still did not approve of using supernatural abilities on innocent civilians indiscriminately, especially since it had even resulted in people being injured and bleeding!

Cheng Zhen raised an eyebrow and asked, "Is he innocent?"

Those who incite the masses to obstruct the city guards from carrying out their missions are not innocent.

He ignored Pingjiang. Pingjiang was capable, but he was too rigid and dogmatic. He was always inflexible and never knew how to adapt. They were not on the same wavelength.

Jiang Wan brought the equipment back, but instead of staying in the makeshift laboratory to guard the equipment, she moved a stool and sat in the yard, staring blankly at her RV, lost in thought.

Noticing his approaching footsteps, she called out to him, "Come and take a look."

Cheng Zhen subconsciously followed her and walked halfway around the RV, completely bewildered.

Jiang Wan raised her chin and asked him, "Don't you find it an eyesore?"

Cheng Zhen's gaze fell on the RV's dented and battered exterior, and he had to admit that it was indeed very ugly.

"Think of a way to fix this for me."

After saying that, he started walking towards his dormitory.

Can Cheng Zhen say "no"?

Also, what's wrong with this woman?

Even experts should have some boundaries when it comes to men and women, right? To just barge into a single man's dorm room without even a heads-up—is that really appropriate?!

Although the outdoor air quality in the camp is not bad, it is still not as good as the indoor air quality with an oxygen circulator.

The twins were asleep and couldn't be disturbed, but Jiang Wan didn't want to mistreat herself, so she unilaterally decided to hold the conversation in his dormitory.

She stepped inside, taking a deep breath before asking, "When are you going to leave the city to exterminate the mutated plants?"

She was busy with business and didn't notice that after she entered the room next door, two small round heads peeked out from the window of her own room, whispering to each other with unfriendly expressions.

Cheng Zhen was caught off guard. What did this mean? Was this expert going to go out of the city to investigate the mutated plants in the field?

So they didn't notice that throughout the entire dormitory area, the young soldiers, led by Yu Fen, were secretly watching them, whispering and gossiping among themselves.

"I want to leave the city."

Seeing his silence, Jiang Wan directly stated her purpose.

"I'm only responsible for protecting your safety; I can't make that decision," Cheng Zhen said frankly. Jiang Wan needed Lao Liu's permission to leave the city.

No……

He had a feeling that even Lao Liu himself might not be able to make the decision.

Jiang Wan then asked, "Do you know why you're looking for a botanical expert?"

Cheng Zhen nodded: "Of course, it's for oxygen."

Anyone who isn't illiterate knows that green plants produce oxygen through photosynthesis.

"Then why are there no green plants in your camp?"

Cheng Zhen shut up.

"Why are those green plants mutating, whether in the city or outside?"

Cheng Zhen frowned.

Finally, do you know why this world is short of oxygen?

Cheng Zhen frowned.

“That’s why you’re looking for plant experts.” Jiang Wan stood by the window, her gaze passing over the wall and looking towards the distant horizon. “But the people on the list of experts you got are all dead.”

In fact, if she had followed the path of her past life, she would already be dead.

She suddenly turned around, staring directly and sharply at Cheng Zhen: "So, can you tell me what I, as a botany expert, should be doing? Am I just supposed to be protected here by you, eating and waiting to die, wasting food and air?"

Cheng Zhen was stunned again.

Jiang Wan bluntly pointed out to him: "Or is it that you yourself don't know what I'm going to do next?"

It wasn't until she left and entered her dormitory that Cheng Zhen seemed to wake up from a dream. After pondering for a while, she called Yu Fen over: "Be alert and keep an eye on things. I'm going out for a bit."

Yu Fen, unaware of the turmoil Cheng Zhen was experiencing, continued to ask with a grin, "Boss, you were alone with the expert just now, a man and a woman alone in a room..."

Before he could finish speaking, he got a blow to the head: "Ouch... Boss!"

"If you know I'm your boss, then shut up and get your job done! If anything happens to the expert, see how I deal with you!"

Cheng Zhen tried hard to suppress her temper so as not to teach him a lesson right now: "Find a reliable person to fix the expert's RV."

He went to find Lao Liu. In fact, after the apocalypse, when he received this mission, he had thought about this question: why not let them find the person and send them directly to the Central Headquarters Research Institute, but instead let them protect them nearby?

Old Liu had just hung up the phone and was throwing a tantrum in the dorm. When he saw him come in, he didn't give him a friendly look either. He just snorted and didn't even look at him before starting to scold him:

"I asked you to requisition some equipment, and wow, you really made me proud! What did you do? Huh? Shoot at college students? You're really something!"

Cheng Zhen corrected: "It wasn't firing a gun, it was a light shockwave."

"Oh, you use your superpowers on innocent students, and you still have the nerve to argue?!"

“They are not innocent.” Cheng Zhen’s expression was calm, but his eyes were turbulent. After calming down, he said, “Battalion Commander, the experts are making a fuss about leaving the city.”

Old Liu laughed in anger: "I can't make that decision. I just received orders from above to bring her into the city!"
