Chapter 23 Departure for City A

On August 12th, Xia Feng and Lin Xuan packed everything and officially set off for City A.

Lin Xuan knocked on the door next door to say goodbye to her neighbors, Steve and his family, and was met with a few hoarse shouts in response.

Just like in their previous life, they drove their family's SUV. The car's battery had died because it hadn't been driven for a long time.

Xia Feng reconnected the power and used the nails and other metals from the hardware store as raw materials to create several oil drums with his supernatural abilities. He filled several drums with oil and placed them in the trunk for later use.

In the back of the car, some rice, noodles, compressed biscuits, instant noodles and water were placed for show. Then, a camping tent, portable gas stove, cookware, lunch box, camping light, folding chair and other items were taken out and the trunk was filled.

Xiao Huang, the cat, was left in the space. Xia Feng had previously made a lot of cat food for it using fish and meat from the cold chain. It was too dangerous outside, so it wasn't suitable to bring it along. The two of them could only take turns coming in to feed it when they were resting.

Starting from home, Xia Feng decided to take the highway first to check the situation, since the highway entrance was very close. If the highway was blocked, he would then switch to the national highway.

The straight-line distance between D City and A City is more than 3,200 kilometers. He only has a "National Self-Driving Tour Map" as his navigation tool, but it's not a big problem. He can find A City by heading north from his home.

The car started and drove out of the garage, followed by a few startled zombies. Lin Xuan sat in the passenger seat, opened the window and leaned out, using her invisible vines to push aside the zombies blocking her way.

Xia Feng, with a cigarette dangling from his mouth, gave her a look that said, "You're something else." Lin Xuan returned a wicked and arrogant smile.

Xia Feng drove smoothly out of the residential area and onto the main road. After driving for a while, he suddenly saw something and pulled over.

"Xiao Bao, come with me to collect some things." Xia Feng got out of the car first, and Lin Xuan saw a tobacco and alcohol store not far away. She immediately looked for it, quickly unbuckled her seatbelt, and followed him.

Her brother doesn't drink much, but he's a heavy smoker. She didn't collect many cigarettes when she was collecting supplies; she can make sure to replenish them later.

Xia Feng unleashed a powerful slash, instantly felling a whole group of zombies surrounding the shop entrance. This power was many times greater than her skill level, which was still focused on drilling holes in the skulls of the zombies one by one.

Fortunately, the store was open, and the goods inside were not damaged much. The store was about 80 square meters in size, and the shelves on three walls were full of various brands of liquor and all kinds of cigarettes.

After clearing everything off the shelves and in the glass display case below, the two jogged back to the car.

Lin Xuan never tried to persuade Xia Feng to smoke less. In fact, she thought Xia Feng looked quite handsome when he smoked. Her father, whom she had no recollection of, was supposedly a teetotaler, yet he still passed away early. In this world, life and death are preordained, and wealth and status are determined by fate.

However, Xia Feng rarely smoked in front of Lin Xuan. Before the apocalypse, he never smoked at home; he always smoked in the corridor.

Now they have to try to avoid splitting up as much as possible, and he is also careful to control how often he smokes, but there are always times when he can't resist.

I started the car and headed towards the highway again. Once on the highway, the road wasn't as congested as I'd imagined. There were some cars parked crookedly on the side of the road, but overall the road was passable, and there weren't many zombies.

I closed the car windows, turned on the air conditioning, connected my phone to the car's computer via Bluetooth, and played some background music for my brother who was driving hard.

"Hajimi, Hajimi, Hajimi... Nandai Nongdou~~~"

Xia Feng's hand trembled, and the car almost crashed into the highway guardrail.

"Baby, can't we change the song...?"

"Isn't it nice? So cute, hajimi, hajimi..." Lin Xuan sang along, nodding her head.

Fine, as long as he's happy, Xia Feng has no complaints.

The car headed north towards City A, while a helicopter and the vehicle traveled in the opposite direction, speeding towards the city center.

With tremendous noise and the roar of rotors, we looked down at the city from the air.

The sound of the broadcast echoed over the city:

"Attention citizens, attention citizens! I am Wei Jie, the temporary head of the D City Protection Station. In this critical moment when the city is overrun by zombies, to protect our lives and property and prevent further zombie attacks, D City has temporarily established a protection station to provide shelter. It is located in Fuqiu Garden, Gan District, D City. We urge surviving citizens to go to the protected area. Basic food and drinking water are provided there… Please find any tools that can be used as weapons to protect yourselves. It is currently known that the zombies' weak point is their head; destroying their brains is the only way to truly kill them… To protect our homes, let us join hands and fight against the zombies together…"

As the helicopter flew away, carrying the broadcast to the city center, the city's survivors finally saw hope. They gathered their meager food and water, took their weapons, and headed towards the protection station, either in groups or alone.

Of course, there were also people like Lin Xuan who sensed that D City might not provide long-term safe haven and went to other cities.

Ultimately, only those who can adapt to change more quickly will survive longer.

Xia Feng drove for nearly two hours before leaving D City. Along the way, he didn't encounter any particularly congested sections, but there were still quite a few cars stuck on the road.

Passing through the gaps between these cars, sometimes encountering one or two cars that completely block the road, I would use the strong wind to flip the car to one side.

Lin Xuan was sleeping in the passenger seat, her mouth agape and drooling. She was holding a half-eaten bag of potato chips. Xia Feng took her phone with one hand and turned off the loud music playing on it.

There was a highway service area not far ahead, so Xia Feng decided to stop there to rest and maybe pick up some gasoline and supplies.
