Chapter 11 Taotie

After the meal, the four members of the family, grandfather, grandmother, and grandson, took shovels and went to the orchard.

The orchard, laden with fruit, exudes a faint fruity fragrance.

The pomegranates and dates were laden with fruit, bending the branches low.

The Bai family's orchard is mostly planted with pomegranate and persimmon trees, because Bai Xizhu and her brother love to eat them.

"Xiao Zhu, is three of each kind enough?"

Bai Zhengxuan carried a shovel, glanced at his own orchard, and felt somewhat reluctant to leave.

These fruit trees were planted when he was young. He lived in the city when he was young, and he didn't have time to farm the land at home, so he simply planted fruit trees instead.

Many of the trees were quite old, but he took good care of them, and the fruit they produced was large and sweet.

I really don't want to leave this place and ignore them.

"That's enough. It's most cost-effective to use the rest of the space to grow grains and vegetables."

Bai Xizhu felt a little regretful looking at so many fruit trees, but the space was only so big, and food and vegetables were the most important resources in the apocalypse.

"dig!"

Bai Zhengxuan sighed, shouldered his shovel, and walked into the orchard. He stood in front of a pomegranate tree and began to dig.

Bai Xizhu and the others also chose their respective fruit trees and began digging.

The orchard is large and some distance from the village, so there's no need to worry about being discovered.

The orchard has many kinds of fruit trees, including cherry trees, pomegranate trees, persimmon trees, apple trees, jujube trees, and even two walnut trees.

The fruit trees don't need to be dug up completely. When the roots of the fruit trees can be moved, Bai Xizhu can put the fruit trees into her space.

After working for two hours, the group managed to store three of each type of fruit tree into their spatial storage. Seeing that no one was outside, Bai Xizhu led the group into the space.

"With such fertile land, we'll definitely have plenty to eat and drink in the future."

Bai Zhengxuan squatted down and touched the soil, a smile on his face.

He finally understood the meaning of the apocalypse. However, fate was kind to them; at least he and his wife awakened their superpowers, and their granddaughter also gained a spatial ability.

He had experienced famine and knew how unpleasant hunger felt, so he was very happy that his granddaughter had such an incredible ability as a spatial dimension.

"If we buy a few harvesters and some more wheat and corn seeds another day, we really won't be afraid of going hungry."

As Liu Jing dug a hole with a shovel, she looked around the open space.

“We have enough grain, but we also need to grow more vegetables.” Bai Zhengxuan plucked the green leaves that had grown on his face from sweat and said while digging a hole, “We need to buy some books on growing grain and vegetables, not just books on farming, but also books on saving vegetable seeds.”

He is the son of a farmer, and he knows a little about growing grains and vegetables, but he has long forgotten how to save seeds and such. It would be more appropriate for him to buy some books.

“Okay, I’ll go online and buy some books about farming later, but I don’t know where to buy a harvester.” Bai Xizhu frowned.

Wheat and corn are harvested much faster with combine harvesters. Using sickles and hands is too slow, and tasks like hulling are also quite troublesome. Combine harvesters are the most convenient option.

"They sell it in town. People in our village go to town to find people to help them harvest their grain. It's worth several dozen yuan per mu!"

Bai Zhengxuan spoke while breathing fire.

The flames shot incredibly high, even higher than those shot by the acrobats.

"Grandpa, you... could you tone it down a bit?"

Bai Xizhu glanced at Bai Yifan, who was standing to the side, filled with envy, jealousy, and hatred.

"But—I can't control myself!"

Bai Zhengxuan said indistinctly.

"Hold your breath, focus on your brain, and try to control every cell in your body with your brain," Bai Xizhu said softly.

Whether human or zombie, all have undergone changes in their brains, and all superpowers are controlled by a certain part of the brain.

"Phew... I'm feeling a bit better!"

Bai Zhengxuan covered his mouth with his hand and exhaled some smoke.

"Alas, some are dying of drought, while others are drowning in floods!"

Bai Yifan silently went to the stream to fetch water to water the newly planted fruit trees.

As a delusional teenager who loves all kinds of post-apocalyptic novels, it's really... frustrating that he hasn't awakened any superpowers!

His sister told him that 99% of people only awakened their superpowers after the apocalypse broke out, but seeing that all three members of his family had awakened their superpowers, Bai Yifan was itching to do the same!

Every time I see his grandfather inexplicably breathing fire and sprouting buds, I feel like he's showing off!

Bai Zhengxuan didn't feel like he was showing off at all; on the contrary, he felt that his superpowers were a bit troublesome.

However, ever since his granddaughter told him that when one's superpowers reach a certain level, one can eat whatever one wants, he has developed a strong interest in improving his superpowers.

After planting the fruit trees, the group began to wander around the space.

"Why are these three statues so strange?" Bai Yifan asked, looking at the three white jade statues. "Could they be the kind of cheat codes that are mentioned in novels?"

Bai Xizhu touched the three white jade statues. They felt warm and smooth to the touch. She felt that these statues were unusual, but she couldn't quite put her finger on what made them special.

One of the statues is very small; it's a bird that looks like a bee, but it's as big as a mandarin duck.

The other one is a snake.

The biggest one is that tiger-like creature, which looks a little... ugly.

Bai Xizhu couldn't see anything else.

"Hey, isn't that a Taotie?"

People's teacher Bai Zhengxuan looked the statue over and recognized it immediately.

"Taowu?" Bai Xizhu looked puzzled.

“It is recorded in the Classic of Mountains and Seas that it is one of the four fierce beasts in Chinese mythology. It has the body of a tiger, the face of a human, and the teeth of a wild boar in its mouth.” Bai Zhengxuan continued to examine the statue. “This bird that looks like a quail should be Qin Yuan. It is highly poisonous and can kill any animal or plant. The other one is a snake. I can’t see anything special about it.”
