Chapter 12 Infirmary
A familiar voice sounded in her ears, and Yan Sui's hand holding the camera shook suddenly.
Whistles whistled incessantly on the playground, and people kept passing her. The dust on the sandy field flew up, and someone jumped too hard and plunged headfirst into the mud, and laughter immediately filled the air.
But nothing caught her attention.
Yan Sui's attention was on the person behind her.
Neither side said anything, and both sides seemed to be testing each other.
This silent struggle lasted for a long time. Yan Sui pulled on one side of the rope, observing the force. But the rope didn't budge, and the person on the other side didn't react at all.
After a long stalemate, Yan Sui finally couldn't help but look back.
The young man was standing behind her with his back to the light. His tall body blocked the midday sun. The halo of light stained his entire body, coating him with a layer of golden light.
Seeing her turn around, the boy grinned, his brows revealing the youthful spirit that could not be hidden——
"We meet again."
.
Yan Sui nodded, pressed the corners of her lips and said "hmm", then she withdrew her gaze without any expression and continued to point the camera at Tan Shu in the crowd on the battlefield.
Seeing that she was not enthusiastic, Yu Shuli did not say anything, but continued to stand behind her to block the sunlight for her.
Yan Sui resisted the urge to look back and focused his attention on the battlefield in front of him.
But the person behind her just stood there, bringing the two of them very close. Faintly, she could smell a familiar scent in her nose.
It was the smell of soapberries on Yu Shuli's clothes.
Smelling the familiar scent of soapberries, Yan Sui's eyes, which were staring at the camera screen, couldn't help but start to blank out.
In her previous life, she loved to throw herself into Yu Shuli's arms, bury her face in his clothes and smell the fragrance of his clothes.
Yu Shuli is a boy who loves cleanliness very much. Unlike the boys in her class who smell of sweat during sports, he always has a refreshing scent of soap nuts on his body.
Even after exercising, he would change his clothes and put on clean and fresh clothes.
Yan Sui used to be addicted to his scent. After her father cheated on her and ran away with the money in her previous life, she always forced herself to stand up and become the new pillar of the family.
She forced herself to appear relaxed in front of her younger siblings so that they could study with peace of mind.
But physical and mental fatigue is hard to ignore. Whenever she feels exhausted, Yu Shuli always appears by her side and gives her a hug.
Yan Sui would also hug him and murmur, "Recharge."
The scent of soapberry on his body accompanied her through the most difficult days of high school. In the spare time between balancing family and study, he was like a power bank that could charge her at any time. He accompanied her through day and night.
When she smelled the familiar scent of soapberries again, her body reacted before she did, and her mind was in a trance for a moment.
It also reminded her of herself during that time.
.
She blinked lightly, and her wandering thoughts were instantly brought back.
Yan Sui didn't want to recall those days anymore, and she firmly believed that she would never experience such a dark moment again in her life.
At this moment, Tan Shu was preparing to jump for the first time.
Yan Sui stood up. The long squatting position had blocked the blood flow in her thighs, causing her legs to become numb for a moment.
She held up the camera and looked straight ahead. She licked her lips with the tip of her tongue and whispered, "What are you doing here?"
The person behind her seemed caught off guard by her sudden action and paused for a moment, but quickly continued her conversation, saying, "I was just passing by and saw you and Tan Shu here, so I came to say hello."
At the same time, Tan Shu started to run up until she reached the line in front of the sand pit, then she retracted her legs and jumped towards the sand pit.
Yan Sui's eyes sank slightly, and the return of blood made the numbness in her legs fade away completely: "Is that so..."
Tan Shu landed steadily in the sand pit, raising a cloud of dust.
Yan Sui held the camera steadily and filmed the whole process. She put away her thoughts and gave Tan Shu a thumbs up.
Tan Shu stood up panting, his cheeks flushed from the run-up.
Noticing Yan Sui giving her a thumbs-up, she gasped and gave him a wink in return.
Yan Sui couldn't help laughing, but she didn't stop taking pictures with the camera in her hand.
She focused on Tan Shu on the field and didn't talk to the person behind her.
Yu Shuli casually brought up a few topics beside her, but she responded perfunctorily to them all.
As if he noticed that she had no intention of chatting, Yu Shuli felt a little depressed. He made an excuse that he had a game soon and decided not to stay here. He then cheered for him and Tan Shudao.
Yan Sui agreed.
After Yu Shuli left, Yan Sui confirmed that he was no longer around, and then she turned back to look for Yu Shuli.
She whispered "System."
The system responded in her mind at the appropriate time.
Yan Sui pondered and asked, "At this moment today, can you tell that there is something wrong with Yu Shuli?"
System: "From the conversation just now, I sensed that he was lying."
Yan Sui nodded and slowly looked away: "I felt it too."
—
Tan Shu's long jump results came out on the spot.
The number of meters she jumped was a little behind that of other members of the school track and field team in her grade group, but her advantage was that she jumped in an orderly manner, without any fouls or falls in the sand pit. She stood out among the students in the same group who were pulled in to make up the numbers, and just made it into the top eight, winning a good result of eighth place.
Tan Shu was already satisfied with the result. She tossed the bottle of mineral water in her hand up and down. "I was just here to make up the numbers, but who would have thought I'd actually win a prize? I'll take this certificate tonight and ask Mom and Dad for some extra pocket money."
As she said this, a smile graced her face.
Yan Sui, who was listening nearby, couldn't help but be affected by her emotions. She smiled and joked with her, "Haven't you been talking about wanting a new game card for a while? Now that I have my pocket money, I can buy it."
"Yes, yes! Oh, right, Sui Sui," Tan Shu immediately put away the bottle of mineral water he had thrown up, and took Yan Sui's elbow. "It's almost time for dinner, shall we go to the cafeteria first? We can avoid the crowds and save ourselves from squeezing with other students after the morning session."
"Aren't we supposed to gather at the end of this? Is it okay to leave early?"
"It's okay, it's okay. I just saw a lot of people going to the cafeteria to eat in the bunker. They won't be checking that strictly. Let's just give it a try and escape."
Without waiting for Yan Sui to answer, Tan Shu winked at her and said, "I'll treat you to celebrate my entry into the top eight today."
Yan Sui raised an eyebrow: "Do I have to kill you then?"
"Hey, feel free to charge me. This afternoon's expenses will be paid for by this book."
Just as Tan Shu and Yan Sui were excitedly discussing what to eat for lunch, a shout suddenly came from behind them -
"Tan Shu!"
Hearing their good friend's name, Yan Sui and Tan Shu stopped and looked back at the same time.
Yan Sui didn't know the person who came, but when she heard Tan Shu calling the other person's name, she thought he must be a classmate of Tan Shu.
The girl stopped in front of Tan Shu, holding her waist with one hand and breathing heavily. She uttered a few syllables intermittently, but they were drowned out by the panting and it was impossible to hear what she was saying.
Tan Shu comforted him: "Don't be anxious, talk slowly."
The girl swallowed her saliva and then spoke clearly: "Yu Shuli fell while running just now. There is a big cut on his forehead and his face is covered in blood."
Yan Sui was stunned.
It had only been a short time since she and Yu Shuli had separated in the sandpit. He had said before leaving that he had a match to play, but she had thought it was an excuse, an excuse he had sensed her emotions, and it turned out to be the truth.
Tan Shu suddenly became anxious: "Where is he now?"
"He went to the school infirmary, but the wound on his head looked quite large. Cheng Jia asked me to talk to you about whether we should go to the hospital."
Tan Shu is the class life committee member in their class, and is in charge of matters such as students requesting leave during the school sports meeting.
"The teacher seems to have gone out this morning," Tan Shu paused and said immediately, "Never mind, I'll go to the infirmary first. If that doesn't work, I'll go find another teacher to write a note for leave."
Tan Shu had to go to the infirmary to deal with Yu Shuli's matter, so the two had to change their route.
Originally, Yan Sui didn't need to go with them. Tan Shu was holding her hand, but after hearing the news and going to the infirmary, he forgot to let go of her hand for a moment.
Yan Sui stared at her tightly clasped hands, and her steps uncontrollably followed Tan Shu's steps in a certain direction.
She pursed her lips, but ultimately said nothing and followed Tan Shu to the infirmary.
.
In the infirmary, Yu Shuli sat quietly on the bed. His forehead was wrapped in gauze, and there were traces of blood on his face.
There was no one around him, he was alone, his back pressed against the thick wall, his arms hanging limply on his thighs. The sunlight came in through the window in front of him, and happened to fall on him.
When Yan Sui and Tan Shu arrived at the infirmary, they happened to see this scene.
Unlike just now on the playground, the sunlight falling on him now seemed even colder and more desolate, adding a sense of fragmentation to his figure.
Hearing the noise at the door, the person on the bed also reacted slightly.
At that moment, Yan Sui saw a hint of surprise in the look he gave her.
"Yu Shuli!" Tan Shu walked quickly to the bedside. "Are you okay? Where's Cheng Jia?"
Hearing the question, Yu Shuli looked away from Yan Sui and said, "He went to see the homeroom teacher. The wound has been bandaged, but I still feel a little dizzy."
"What did the school doctor say? Where is the school doctor?"
"They said we should go to the hospital for a checkup, so Cheng Jia went to find the teacher," Yu Shuli paused and continued, "A student just fainted on the playground, and the school doctor rushed over."
"Where did Cheng Jia go to find the class teacher?"
Before Yu Shuli could answer, Tan Shu looked around and quickly decided, "Forget it. When Cheng Jia comes back, tell him. You two should wait for me at the school gate. I'll ask Teacher Xu to write you a note of leave. Then Teacher Xu will drive you there."
"OK."
Tan Shu hurried to find the teacher to tell him about Yu Shuli, but when he thought of Yu Shuli's condition, he turned to Yan Sui and asked, "Sui Sui, can you help me stay and keep an eye on him? He's dizzy now, and I'm afraid he'll faint before the other students come back. Can you wait until that boy or the school doctor comes back before you leave?"
This is a small matter, and Yan Sui couldn't possibly refuse Tan Shu.
Moreover, at this moment, facing Yu Shuli, she felt a little worried.
After Tan Shu left, only Yu Shuli and she were left in the school infirmary.
Yu Shuli returned his gaze to her again, "Thank you for your help, Yan Sui."
He smiled at her with his eyebrows curved. Normally, his face, with a smile on it, would have given people a warm and gentle feeling. But at this moment, the dried blood on his face still lingered around his eyebrows, and his smile lacked its usual gentleness, instead carrying a hint of fear.
However, seeing that he still had the energy to greet her, Yan Sui felt a lot more relieved.
She pointed calmly at the blood on his face and said, "Do you want to wipe the blood off your face first?"
It's scary.
Yan Sui did not say the second half of the sentence.
Yu Shuli seemed a little embarrassed when he heard this. He lowered his head, his eyes evading her. "Well... I was in a hurry to treat the wound just now, and I didn't have time to wipe the blood off my face. Did I scare you? I'm sorry."
Yan Sui choked.
She didn't mean anything by that. She just felt that the dried blood on his face was a bit scary. She didn't know how many people would watch him when he walked on the street, so she wanted him to deal with it.
But his answer...
Why does it seem like she said something wrong?
"No, that's not what I meant. I just..." She stopped talking and was speechless for a moment when she looked at Yu Shuli's blood-stained face.
Yan Sui turned her head away and no longer looked at Yu Shuli's face.
Her eyes searched around and finally landed on the disinfectant wipes on the desk.
Yan Sui turned around and pulled out a few disinfectant wipes, then turned back and said, "Wipe it with this!"
"Thank you! Thank you for your help."
As Yu Shuli's voice sounded, his head also rose. The angle of his head was just right, so that his face was facing her.
Yan Sui's hand holding the wet wipes froze in mid-air, and the corners of her lips couldn't help but twitch.
She stuffed the wet wipes into Yu Shuli's hand: "I want you to wipe it yourself."
Yu Shuli finally realized the misunderstanding, and his cheeks, covered in blood, instantly turned red. The moment he took the wet wipe from her hand, he lowered his head again, "Thank you."
But the volume of this "thank you" was much lower than the previous one.
After this incident, Yan Sui felt less awkward and even wanted to laugh.
Fearing that Yu Shuli would feel uncomfortable, Yan Sui took the initiative to step back from behind the curtain and found an empty seat outside the curtain to sit down: "If you feel dizzy, just call me."
"Okay," Yu Shuli agreed, "Then I'll call you from inside, in case I faint and you don't know."
"good."
“…”
"Yan Sui."
"Um."
"Yan Sui."
"Um."
"Yan Sui, do you think this cut on my head will leave a scar?"
Yan Sui paused and replied, "I don't know, you can ask the doctor when the time comes."
"Oh, it would be bad if it left a scar."
Yan Sui didn't say anything, but her mind couldn't help but start to recall whether Yu Shuli had this scar on his forehead in his previous life. During the school sports meet before, Yu Shuli didn't seem to fall during the race.
"Yan Sui."
Yan Sui responded subconsciously.
"Do you have a 3,000-meter race this afternoon?"
The memories in her mind were suddenly interrupted, Yan Sui's pupils suddenly contracted, and her hands holding the chair tightened, with her fingertips gripping the handle tightly.
The person on the other side of the curtain didn't notice her unusual behavior and continued to talk to himself: "If I can come back this afternoon, can I come and cheer you up?"
“…”
"Yan Sui?" After waiting for a long time without any answer from her, Yu Shuli called her name in confusion.
Yan Sui suddenly loosened her grip on the armrest of the chair, and the blue-white fingertips from exertion slowly began to fill with blood. She blinked lightly and opened her lips to say—
"Yu Shuli."
"I don't have a 3,000-meter race this afternoon."
