As autumn slowly enveloped the earth like a gentle veil, the new life in Su Jinli's belly was about to mature. Her belly was already bulging, and her figure seemed increasingly unwieldy. Every step was extremely difficult, as if she was carrying the weight of the entire world. Jiang Yan, heartbroken, resolutely turned down all social engagements and stayed at the Lanyue Pavilion day and night, staying by Su Jinli's side wholeheartedly.
At dawn, sunlight filtered through the mottled window lattice, spilling onto Su Jinli's couch. Jiang Yan tiptoed to the bedside, his eyes filled with concern and tenderness. He asked softly, "Madam, how are you feeling today?" His voice was like a spring breeze, gently brushing against Su Jinli's ears.
Su Jinli panted slightly, one hand subconsciously supporting her lower back, and forced a smile, saying, "It's okay, it's just that this little guy kicked particularly hard today, it seems like he's making a lot of noise inside." As soon as she finished speaking, her brows suddenly frowned tightly, and her originally gentle face instantly twisted with pain. Her hands couldn't help but tightly grasp Jiang Yan's arm, her nails almost digging into his flesh, and a faint "pain..." escaped her mouth.
Jiang Yan's face instantly turned pale, as if struck by thunder. Anxiety and worry surged in his heart like a tide. Without thinking, he shouted, "Someone! Quick! Go get the imperial physician! Madam is about to give birth!" This cry, like a sharp signal, instantly shattered the tranquility of the Prime Minister's residence. The entire mansion erupted in a tense and hectic atmosphere.
Prime Minister Su paced thoughtfully in the main hall, clutching his beloved jade ring tightly. Hearing Jiang Yan's cry, his grip suddenly tightened, the ring creaking under his strain, as if he too was nervous for the impending birth. Young Marquis Su, who had been enthusiastically dancing with his wooden sword, immediately rushed towards Lanyue Pavilion like a black whirlwind, bearing his sword. He stood guard at the gate, his eyes firm and alert, like a loyal guard, preventing anyone from approaching, fearing they might disturb his sister, who was undergoing a life-or-death ordeal within.
Su Qingyao, carrying the calming incense she had carefully blended, hurried in and out of the pavilion. Her eyes revealed anxiety and concern, and beads of sweat covered her forehead, but she didn't bother to wipe them away. She only thought about what she could do for her sister, hoping that this calming incense would bring some relief from the pain of childbirth.
Jiang Yan stood outside the delivery room, pacing anxiously like an ant on a hot pan. His palms were already soaked with sweat, and his heart was beating violently in his chest, as if it was about to burst through his chest. Every time he heard Su Jinli's suppressed moans, his heart felt like it was being tightly grasped by an invisible hand, the pain was so severe that he could hardly breathe. Princess Shou'an also hurried over and stood beside Jiang Yan, her small hand tightly grasping his sleeve, her eyes full of worry and fear, and she asked with a trembling voice: "Brother Jiang Yan, is Sister Su okay?"
Jiang Yan tried hard to force a comforting smile and gently touched the princess's head, but his voice trembled slightly uncontrollably: "No, Princess, don't worry, the imperial physician is already in there, and Madam will be safe." Although he tried his best to comfort the princess, his heart was like the sea in a storm, surging and unable to calm down.
Time slipped slowly through the tense and torment, each second stretching like a century. After an unknown amount of time, a resounding cry finally rang out from the delivery room. Like the breaking of dawn bells, it broke the suffocating, tense atmosphere. Jiang Yan, as if struck by an invisible force, abruptly rose from his chair. In his haste, he knocked over the chair behind him.
Immediately afterwards, a midwife came out with a swaddling cloth in her arms, smiling widely, and said loudly, "Congratulations, Lord Jiang, it's a little boy, chubby and healthy!" The midwife's voice was full of joy and relief, as if she was also extremely proud of the birth of this new life.
Jiang Yan hurried forward, carefully taking the swaddling clothes, and looking down at the wrinkled little face within. The tightly closed eyes, the slightly moving mouth, and the gently waving fists all made his heart melt instantly. His eyes instantly moistened, tears welling up in them. He knew that this was the fruit of his and Su Jinli's love, the most precious and treasured child in his life.
Upon hearing the news, Prime Minister Su, Young Marquis Su, and the others immediately gathered around. Young Marquis Su curiously leaned over, carefully examining the baby, and excitedly exclaimed, "Sister! My nephew looks just like you! Look at his little mouth, it's exactly like yours!" His eyes sparkled with excitement, as if he could see the joy of playing with his nephew in the future.
Su Qingyao curled her lips and said disdainfully: "Nonsense, he obviously looks like Brother Jiang Yan. Look at his eyebrows and eyes, he looks so much like Brother Jiang Yan when he was a child." There was a hint of certainty in her tone, as if she had no doubt about her judgment.
Just as everyone was arguing, the Emperor and the Empress Dowager arrived. The Empress Dowager walked over to Jiang Yan with a loving expression on her face, gently taking the baby and cradling him in her arms. A beaming smile spread across her face, and she exclaimed, "Wonderful! My grandson! He's so handsome! Look at his little face, so rosy and tender. He's sure to be a handsome boy in the future." The Empress Dowager's eyes were filled with doting and love, as if this little baby was the most dazzling pearl in her life.
The emperor could not contain his joy, rubbing his hands and saying impatiently: "Let me see! Well, he is a good boy! He is chubby and strong. He will learn to fly a kite from me in the future. I will teach him to fly the most beautiful kite!" The emperor's eyes were shining with excitement and expectation, as if he had already seen the scene of the little prince running happily in the imperial garden and flying a kite.
