Chapter 157 Come on, let's tear this apart!
Upon hearing this, Madam Zheng sighed and echoed, "Alas, that's right! Our Duke of Jin's mansion has no capable people, so it's no wonder that others look down on us. Your Marquis of Xuanping's mansion isn't much better. Your son can see the Emperor, but his official rank is low, and he's disloyal to you. Won't outsiders take the opportunity to kick you while you're down?"
The two men, working in unison, exposed the snobbishness of the Annam Earl's household.
Lady Annan's face darkened upon hearing this, but she still patiently stepped forward and curtsied, saying, "Greetings, Madam Zheng and Madam Qiao. Please forgive any shortcomings in our hospitality."
Then, Lady Annam changed the subject and chuckled, teasingly saying, "Speaking of which, you two are quite late. My daughter-in-law, who was in charge of greeting people at the door, has already returned, and you two are only now arriving."
"Besides, I didn't expect you two to actually come today."
Madam Zheng was bedridden, so they didn't even send her an invitation.
As for Madam Qiao, rumors were rampant. Who in their right mind would go out and listen to others gossiping about them?
The Duchess of Annam dismissed the blame entirely in a joking tone. Those in the know understood what she meant.
Before Min Qiaoshi and Zheng Taifu appeared, almost everyone in the flower hall was talking about them.
"If you didn't want me to come, why did you have your daughter send me an invitation?" Madam Min raised an eyebrow. "If it weren't for Yue Rou personally sending me the invitation and sincerely inviting me, would I have come?"
Lady Annam frowned and glanced at her youngest daughter behind her, a hint of doubt flashing in her eyes.
Before Lady Annam could say anything, Madam Zheng followed behind, saying sarcastically, "Speaking of which, I've come uninvited. Although our Duke of Jin's mansion has declined, surely we can't even get an invitation?"
"Ha, that's true. Ever since the Marquis of An'nan got involved with the Virtuous Consort in the palace, why would they care about a poor family like the Duke of Jin's?"
As she spoke, she patted Madam Min Qiao on the shoulder and said, "I reckon you got the invitation thanks to your third daughter-in-law. Otherwise, Madam Annan wouldn't have been able to glare at your third daughter-in-law just now."
Min Qiao nodded, deeply agreeing, and said, "I guess that's the case too. Oh well, since they don't welcome us, let's leave. We don't want to be disliked here."
As he spoke, he began to help Madam Zheng leave.
Good heavens, a Marquis's wife and a Duke's wife, they just arrived and left. If word gets out, what will become of the reputation of the Annan Earl's Mansion?
Moreover, with so many people watching, if they were to leave, what would others think of the Marquis of Annan's residence?
Just as Lady Annam was suppressing her anger and preparing to say a few kind words, Old Lady Sun, who had been silent all along, finally spoke.
"Let them go."
Madam Sun wore a disdainful expression, as if she had seen through their tricks. She glanced coldly at Madam Min Qiao, then gave Madam Zheng a mocking look. Finally, her attitude changed, and she said to Madam Annan with a smile, "If you stop them from leaving, and Madam Zheng loses control of herself and does something... wouldn't she blame you for everything?"
As she spoke, Madam Sun gestured meaningfully with her hand under her nose, as if she could already smell something fishy or foul.
Although it wasn't explicitly stated, these words and actions were blatantly implying that Madam Zheng had urinated in front of her.
Upon hearing this, the entire room fell silent, followed by quiet murmurs from the crowd.
At the same time, everyone's attention was focused on Madam Zheng.
"That thing is actually true?"
"I thought it was just a rumor! I didn't expect it to be true!"
"Of course it's true, otherwise would Old Madam Sun dare to say that?"
"Tsk tsk, if something like this happened, I wouldn't even be able to survive, let alone go out!"
"Who says otherwise? If it were me, I wouldn't want to live either!"
...
The murmurs of the crowd reached her ears, and Madam Zheng trembled with rage. At that moment, she truly felt like killing Old Lady Sun.
Madam Min quickly helped Madam Zheng up, shook her head at her, and then beckoned over the palace maid, asking her to help Madam Zheng sit down to the side.
Madam Zheng glared fiercely at Old Madam Sun, unwilling to leave, but then heard Madam Min whisper in her ear, "Find a place to sit and wait to see the show. Trust me, I can find a divine doctor to cure your poison and help you get revenge."
Madam Zheng was then reluctantly helped by the palace maid to find a seat to sit down.
After settling Madam Zheng in, Madam Min Qiao stepped forward and approached Old Madam Sun, her large face directly in front of her.
Upon seeing her approach, Old Madam Sun instinctively tried to back away, but stopped when she realized that Madam Min Qiao had no intention of making a move.
But then, as if she had thought of something, she quickly covered her nose with her hand. After a moment, she didn't smell anything strange on Min Qiao Shi, so she lowered her guard and looked at Min Qiao Shi coldly, "What are you doing?"
Suddenly, Madam Min leaned forward, keeping a distance of less than ten centimeters, face to face, and asked Old Madam Sun in a low voice, "You should have received the message I had He Shi convey to you five days ago, right?"
A sharp glint flashed in Madam Sun's eyes, and she replied indifferently, "I don't know what you're talking about."
Min Qiao suddenly turned around, a strange smile curving her lips. "It seems you've chosen the second option."
Seeing the strange smile on Min Qiao's face, Old Madam Sun suddenly felt a sudden, inexplicable chill.
No! What could Madam Min Qiao do? An old woman estranged from her son and with no support from her own family, at best she could only bully Madam He because of her status. She refused to believe that Madam Min Qiao could do anything to her! And what could she possibly do to her!
Just as Madam Sun was trying to comfort herself, Madam Min suddenly took two steps back, looked at Madam Sun with a horrified expression, pointed at her, and shouted incredulously, "You old hag surnamed Sun, how cruel you are!"
Min Qiao's shout instantly drew everyone's attention.
But what is Madam Qiao up to now?
Just as everyone was wondering, Min Qiaoshi suddenly dropped a bombshell: "If you want to take revenge on the Xuanping Marquis's Mansion for your deceased godson Lu Shanglin, you can come directly to my Xuanping Marquis's Mansion. Why did you have He Shi poison Madam Zheng?"
"The affairs of the Duke of Jin's mansion and the Min and Lu families have absolutely nothing to do with each other! Madam Zheng has absolutely nothing to do with our two families either! How can you treat human life so lightly?"
...
PS: The part in Chapter 149 that required Madam He to turn herself in has been changed to Madam He and Old Madam Sun turning themselves in together. Madam He's role was too minor, so Old Madam Sun was added.
