"Xiaoxiao, come quick, lunch is ready, come and eat." Grandma Su was sitting in the yard waiting, her eyes glancing at the gate from time to time. When she saw Su Xiao return, she stood up to greet her.
While Su Xiao was making lunch next door, she had already adjusted her mindset. When she faced Grandma Su again, she was polite, well-mannered, and handled the situation with ease.
However, to the elderly couple, this was just formality and awkwardness.
"Okay, thank you, Grandma. I'll go call Yanzi, she'll be right there."
Su Xiao smiled and nodded to Grandma Su, then quickly went to the room and called for dinner, "Yanzi, eat first."
Huang Feiyan was reading at her desk when she heard about eating. She hesitated for a moment and said weakly, "How about I eat some dry rations..."
"What are you saying? Come out quickly." Su Xiao stepped forward and pulled her up, comforting her as she said, "I have my own ideas, don't dawdle."
Seeing that she had a plan, Huang Feiyan stopped being coy and obediently followed her out of the room.
Grandpa Su put in a lot of effort today. Because it's Chinese New Year, the family has prepared plenty of New Year's goods and managed to cook a few decent dishes.
Pork and cabbage stew with glass noodles, steamed salted fish, stir-fried celery, and egg drop soup.

"Lunch was rushed, so this afternoon I'll have your grandpa kill a chicken, and we'll make chicken soup for dinner." Grandma Su served Su Xiaoxiao a full bowl of rice and handed it to her.
Seeing this, Su Xiao quickly took the spoon and said, "Grandma, I don't have that much of an appetite. Half a bowl is enough."
She removed the excess rice and gave it to Huang Feiyan, knowing her appetite and giving her just the right amount.
Then, she continued serving rice to Grandpa and Grandma Su.
"Grandma, Grandpa, Yanzi will be staying with us for the next few days. We'll buy rice and flour this afternoon. Don't kill the chicken tonight; we can do it after the New Year." Su Xiao handed the food to the two of them and explained the situation in a few words.
Upon hearing that they would be buying rice and flour that afternoon, Huang Feiyan felt a surge of relief. "That's right," she thought, "I can handle the meals then." Smiling at Grandpa and Grandma Su, she said, "Grandpa and Grandma Su, I'm sorry to trouble you these next few days. From now on, Xiaoxiao and I will take care of the cooking."
Hearing Huang Feiyan take the initiative to do the work, Su Xiao gave her an appreciative look.
Grandpa Su felt a pang of sadness at Su Xiao's polite words and said dejectedly, "Why buy rice and flour? We don't need you two little girls to eat. Just rest when you get back. Cooking isn't hard work; Grandpa can do it."
Grandpa Su had honed his cooking skills during the months Grandma Su was bedridden, and his dishes were quite delicious. Now that he didn't have to work in the fields, he felt uncomfortable being idle all day, so even though Grandma Su was better, he was still doing the kitchen work. He was unwilling to take over the kitchen work when Huang Feiyan offered to.
Su Xiao sensed the displeasure in her grandfather's tone and said with a slight thought, "Grandpa, I rarely come back, I just wanted to show more respect to you and Grandma."
Grandpa Su was pleased to hear her say that, and was about to say something when his foot under the table was kicked.
"Your son is so filial, old man, you should be secretly happy." Grandma Su suddenly spoke up, and then said to Su Xiao, "Your grandfather and I are very happy that you have such filial piety. However, your grandfather is a man who can't sit still, so you can help him out when the time comes."
Grandpa Su looked at Grandma Su and agreed, "Yes, yes."
