The father-in-law and son-in-law did not tell the rest of their family about Qin Qinglu's discovery and her arrival in Kyoto, fearing it would be a false alarm and leave them with only sadness.
The following afternoon, Gu Tingjiang arrived at the train station with anticipation. The driver, Xiao Chen, held up a handwritten sign with the words "Comrade Su Peipei of Nancheng" in large characters.
The train arrived at the station, and crowds surged forth.
Gu Tingjiang and his companion's actions were quite conspicuous and easy to spot in a busy area.
"Peipei, have you seen anyone?" Liu Cuihua was carrying a large bag on her back and two bags in her hands. She looked around, and the contents of the bags were still wriggling slightly.
Su Peipei was wearing a white shirt and military green trousers. She actually wanted to wear a short skirt, but her mother disagreed, saying that she shouldn't dress too fashionably, lest the other party notice something amiss.
Su Peipei scoffed, but still obediently changed her pants.
"I see it, it's over there." Su Peipei covered her mouth and nose, squeezed forward with the flow of people, and finally saw the sign.
Liu Cuihua followed her gaze and saw it too. She immediately pulled her forward, full of energy, a far cry from her previous shortness of breath.
"Comrades, are you here to pick us up? Quick, help me with this." Liu Cuihua finally squeezed in front of the two men and placed her package in front of them.
A flicker of displeasure crossed Gu Tingjiang's eyes as he struggled to suppress the urge to throw the bag. "Which of you is Su Peipei?"
“I am.” After a year of farm life, Su Peipei’s expression grew increasingly somber. “This is my adoptive mother.”
Gu Tingjiang nodded to Liu Cuihua, then looked at Su Peipei and found that she was plain-looking and had no resemblance to the couple.
He looked at her, but he didn't see the excitement Su Xiaoxiao had shown at that moment.
"Let's talk about it when we get back." Gu Tingjiang turned and left.
"Hey, help me with my bag! How can you be so inconsiderate?" Liu Cuihua complained, while Gu Tingjiang had already walked about ten meters away.
"Let's go." Su Peipei was truly exasperated with her mother. Knowing her mother was like this, she suddenly regretted bringing her along.
No matter how unwilling Liu Cuihua was, there was nothing she could do. This was all her belongings, and she couldn't bear to lose any of them. So she could only pick them up again, carry them on her back, and catch up with the people in front of her, complaining all the while, "Why are you walking so fast? Are you in a hurry to be reincarnated?"
"Mom, shut up!" Su Peipei scolded softly, "If you keep talking so rudely, you're not allowed to stay with me."
Seeing Su Peipei get angry, Liu Cuihua immediately deflated and said, "Okay, I won't say anything anymore, alright?"
Su Peipei ignored her and quickened her pace.
As soon as I exited the train station, I saw a man standing in front of a car with the trunk already open.
Su Peipei stepped forward to help Liu Cuihua with the bag and urged her softly, "Hurry up."
Holding her breath, Liu Cuihua quickened her pace and rushed to the car in one breath.
As she got into the car, Liu Cuihua's eyes reddened.
She recalled that not long ago, she had also gotten into a car, but as a criminal. Now, she could sit in the car with dignity.
Sure enough, following my daughter was the right thing to do.
The car was quiet, and we drove in silence all the way to the guesthouse, where we stopped.
"Hey, why aren't you taking us to the Gu family's place?" Liu Cuihua remained seated in the car.
Gu Tingjiang remained silent, so the driver, Xiao Chen, had no choice but to accept the invitation. There was nothing he could do; after all, a higher-ranking official could have an absolute advantage. "Sorry," he said, "we're just following orders."
