The older woman chuckled awkwardly, then looked at Su Xiao expectantly, "Xiao Xiao, did you pass the exam?"
Su Xiao shook her head with regret, "No, we received news that we started reviewing too late, so our knowledge might not be solid enough."
The old woman looked regretful. "Oh dear, why couldn't they pass the exam? Several educated youths from the next alley passed and came back. What a pity."
Huang Feiyan and Su Xiao smiled but remained silent.
The older woman added, "Don't be discouraged. Study hard and try again next year. I heard that the college entrance exam will be reinstated in the future."
"Really? That's great!" Su Xiao said with delight.
The woman nodded twice, then smiled with a hint of pride, as if she had delivered some incredible news.
After saying goodbye to the older woman, Huang Feiyan exchanged a wry smile with Su Xiao, who patted her on the shoulder and said, "Let's go."
The commotion in the alley was quite loud. Grandpa Su and Grandma Su heard it and were already waiting at the door. But when Su Xiao didn't come over for a long time, Grandma Su muttered something impatiently, turned around and went into the yard, leaving Grandpa Su still looking around.
"Xiaoxiao, Yanzi, you're back! Come in quickly!" Grandpa Su greeted them as soon as he saw them coming.

Xu Xiuyun was quite satisfied, not because she coveted the things the girl had, but because she thought the girl was polite, sensible, and someone she could befriend.
"Your uncle is right, don't waste money next time you come. We're family, no need to be so polite. Also, thank you for the dried goods you sent last time. Those dried bamboo shoots were so tender and delicious, they're great for stir-frying or making soup."
Su Xiao laughed and said, "Auntie, you're just being polite with me. Is it really worth you thanking me for such a small amount of useful information? Well then, I should thank you for the yarn you sent me too. Thank you, Aunt Xu."
Seeing Su Xiao's serious yet joking manner, Xu Xiuyun became even more delighted, "You silly child, alright, Auntie won't thank you, and you're not allowed to say anything either."
