"Is anyone home? I'm the new tenant from upstairs." Su Xiao, carrying pan-fried buns, knocked on the door of the last neighbor's house.
They had just visited several places and gained a lot, figuring out how the black market worked. They were just waiting to visit the last one before making their arrangements.
"Squeak." The heavy wooden door opened, and there was a little girl whose clothes were washed until they were faded but very clean and tidy. She looked at them timidly.
"Hello, sisters." The little girl was very polite, and her cautious manner was endearing.
"Little sister, we are the new tenants of the house up ahead. We're new here and just came to visit. These are some pan-fried buns we made, a small token of our appreciation. Please try them."
The little girl looked at them, then at the fragrant food in Su Xiao's hands, resisted the urge to swallow, opened the door a little wider, and said, "Please come in, sister."
Su Xiao and Huang Feiyan entered the courtyard and followed the little girl to the main room.
Su Xiao frowned slightly. She had noticed the smell of medicine in the courtyard when she was at the gate, and once she entered, it was undoubtedly very strong.
"My name is Jin Ling, you can call me Lingling. Sister, have some water." Jin Ling quickly poured water for Su Xiao and the other girl, a hint of embarrassment on her face.
Her family really didn't have anything nice to offer their guests. Besides, since the other party brought gifts, her mother had said that if someone gave something, they should reciprocate. What should she do?
"Thank you, Lingling. Aren't your parents home?" Su Xiao casually took the water, took a sip, and inquired without much thought.
Upon hearing this, Jin Ling froze, her smile vanished, and she said dryly, "My mother is sick and is inside. Sisters, please sit down."
With that, she ran out.
Su Xiao and Huang Feiyan exchanged glances, both puzzled.
A moment later, Jin Ling ran back with a basket in her hand and handed it to Su Xiao. "Sister, there's nothing else good at home. Take this back and add it to your dishes."
These were the ones my brother had painstakingly saved for Mom to nourish her body, but looking at those fragrant pan-fried buns, I felt it wasn't a waste.
Su Xiao looked and saw five eggs in the basket.
"No need," Su Xiao waved her hand. "We're just here for a visit, how could we take your things?"
“Yes, my mom said that we should give something back if we receive something,” Jin Ling insisted.
Hearing her mention her mother again, Su Xiao couldn't contain her curiosity and asked, "Is your mother in her room? Is she sick? Can we go see her?"
Jin Ling was stunned when she heard her words and did not answer for a moment.
Su Xiao continued, "I learned some traditional Chinese medicine from my master before, and I got into Kyoto Medical University through the college entrance examination. I'm here to study. Um, I know a little about medicine..."
Su Xiao wanted to promote herself better, but found that she didn't have a presentable resume. Hmm, certificates are indeed necessary.
"Okay, I'll go ask." Jin Ling's eyes flashed with admiration as she listened to her words, and she was clearly tempted, but she restrained herself and turned to run out.
Su Xiao heard the sound of the door next door opening and closing.
A moment later, Jinling ran over again, her face beaming with joy. "Sister, my mom wants you to come in."
Su Xiao got up and followed Jin Ling into the next room.
