Chapter 12 The Crispy Pastry Shop

The market had everything imaginable. Anmancang and his son Anding each carried a basket of wild vegetables into the restaurant. Anle's feet, which had been dangling from the oxcart, wobbled a couple of times before he jumped down and began to wander around the street, looking at the shops on both sides.

His gaze swept over the grain shop, teahouse, clothing shop, rouge shop, and jewelry shop, finally settling on a pastry shop diagonally opposite the restaurant, where a few onlookers were pointing and whispering about an old woman.

Wherever there's excitement, Anle went to join in and watch the fun.

"That old woman is really unreasonable. I saw it clearly just now. The young shop assistant handed her the peach shortbread, but she didn't catch it properly, so it fell to the ground and broke."

"Yes, I saw it too. What does this have to do with the young waiter? Why is he being so unreasonable and insisting on giving us two more dollars?"

"What's it to you? Get out of my way—" the old woman shouted in a loud voice, and began pushing and shoving people away.

"I'm not here to waste my money. Either you change it for me or give me another piece of pastry."

"Otherwise, this old woman will just sit in front of your shop and won't leave—"

While throwing a tantrum, she actually plopped down in front of the pastry shop, leaving the shop assistant looking quite embarrassed.

"Please don't sit here and make things difficult for me. It was your own fault for not catching it properly and falling. It's not my fault. It didn't fall from my hands. And these two peach shortbreads aren't something I can just replace for you. I don't own this shop."

"If the shopkeeper were here, he definitely wouldn't stand for it either. These two peach shortbreads cost sixteen coins! If everyone were like you, running a losing business every day, how could any pastry shop survive?"

"Grandma, I want to eat peach shortbread! I want to eat peach shortbread! Hurry up and buy it for me!" A chubby, fair-skinned grandson next to the old woman was angrily shoving her.

Anle looked at the old woman sitting on the ground throwing a tantrum and chuckled. The old lady looked quite old, but she was full of energy.

She understood what she was hearing.

It turned out that the old woman had bought two peach shortbreads for her grandson. When the shop assistant handed the shortbreads to the old woman, she didn't catch them properly, and they fell to the ground and broke. The old woman then started arguing with the shop assistant.

The two peach shortbreads, wrapped in oil paper, were laid out on the shop counter.

Looking at the 'corpse' of the peach shortbread, Anle clicked his tongue. It really shattered completely after that fall!

Moreover, it looks greasy and doesn't look very appetizing; it makes people lose their appetite at first glance.

Anle's gaze swept over the pastries displayed on the counter inside the shop, and she raised an eyebrow. Oh, these things were also available in her previous life, but they weren't as exquisite as they looked in her previous life.

These kinds of pastries usually look nice but don't taste good; you get tired of them after eating just a couple of pieces.

However, there are also famous chain stores that make really delicious pastries, such as the Jiangnan pastries in my previous life. The peach shortbread is really not greasy and is especially crispy.

She especially loved the peach shortbread there.

"Hey old man, don't sit in front of the door and delay my business. If our boss sees you like this, he might just drag you to the authorities."

"Oh dear, there really are patrol officers coming!" Someone shouted. The old lady glanced over and saw that there really were government officials approaching. She quickly grabbed the peach shortbread from the counter, grabbed her grandson, and ran off in a flash.

Once the crowd of onlookers in front of the pastry shop realized there was no more drama to watch, they all dispersed. Only then did Anle leisurely approach the pastry shop, staring intently at the pastries displayed on the counter, examining them carefully.

He secretly wondered if he could make money if he opened a pastry shop like this.

However, she really wanted to try these pastries. It wasn't that she was just envious; she just wanted to know how they tasted.

She needed to confirm whether it was as unpalatable as she had imagined.

If this tastes bad, she might become quite popular in this line of work.

Although Anle wasn't actually envious, the young shop assistant saw it differently. Seeing her staring intently at the pastries on the counter, glancing back and forth, he waved helplessly at Anle.

"Little girl, go play somewhere else. If you want to eat, ask your parents to buy it for you."

He was used to seeing children who couldn't afford pastries but always stared at the pastry counter, unable to tear themselves away.

Judging from his clothes, he must have been brought out by an adult from the surrounding villages who came to the market. He is definitely not a child from a wealthy family!

He could tell at a glance that the family whose clothes were patched upon patched were definitely not able to afford pastries.

Being able to eat a steamed bun is already a blessing!

Seeing the waiter's dismissive tone, as if he were dealing with a beggar, Anle gave him a cold look, then glanced at the shop's signboard, "One-Bite Crispy Pastry."

With this kind of service attitude, I give it a bad review!

"Little sister, what are you doing here? You scared me to death! You've disappeared in the blink of an eye."

When An Ding saw An Le, his anxious face relaxed with a sigh of relief. He grabbed An Le and dragged her toward the restaurant entrance.

"Second brother, I really want to try the peach shortbread here."

An Ding rubbed his forehead, his head throbbing.

"We can't afford this expensive stuff."

"I just saw an old lady with a little grandson buy two peach shortbreads here. The shop assistant said it cost sixteen coins."

"Yes, everything here is expensive. This is a famous pastry shop in our town."

These peach shortbreads are three coins more expensive than those in other pastry shops; they cost five coins elsewhere, but eight coins here.

But wealthy families love to buy from here. The pastries here taste delicious, and the young ladies and mistresses of wealthy families all love them, even if it costs more money.

"Second brother, although I've never tried the peach shortbread from this pastry shop, I think if I opened a shop like this, it would definitely taste even better than the ones here."

An Ding was stunned for a moment, and then, with a "poof," she burst into a wide smile that made her eyes disappear.

"Little sister, did you really hit your head and make it stupid? How could you say such nonsense? People will laugh at you for being a silly girl."

Where would we get the money to open such an expensive shop? Forget about such a pipe dream in this lifetime.

If you're lucky enough to be born into a good family, may you be reborn into a wealthy one next time. You might even be able to drive a car there.

Anle blinked and glanced at An Ding. He was taking her words as a joke; she had no intention of joking with him!

She was serious about everything she said!

They actually treated her like a six-year-old child. Just wait, she'll make them look at her in a completely different light!
