Chapter 23 The Adoption Scandal (Part 1)

Li Changsheng nodded.

"Although you have no right to speak, what you said makes sense. I can't persuade your grandfather like this. It's your family matter. I'm just here to act as a notary."

"If this really doesn't work, let's go to the yamen (government office) and let them make a judgment. Let's see what to do about this."

As he spoke, his gaze fell on An Daliang.

"Anyway, it's not that the eldest son doesn't want to support his family; it's just that you two old folks are unwilling to come along."

"The second son's family feels that no matter how the family is divided, it is unfair to them. They wish that the eldest son's family could leave with nothing. Because of this, I have no way to resolve this matter."

"If I really let the eldest son's family be kicked out of the house with nothing, I'll lose all face as the village head. Who would dare to ask me to notarize a family division in the future?"

Anle blinked.

"If the problem of my father's unfilial reputation for not supporting his parents can be resolved, and if the villagers can stop saying a bad word about my father, then my grandparents can do whatever they want, and we will be happy to let them have peace of mind."

She's already made the hint so obvious, you should understand what she means, right?

As long as everyone in the village knows what happened, this smear won't affect her cheapskate father's reputation.

As soon as Anle spoke, a brilliant idea flashed in Li Changsheng's mind.

"Then let's call everyone in the village over and have them all do a notarized ceremony."

"As long as you two, Da Liang, personally explain what happened and prevent the villagers from gossiping about your eldest son behind his back, and ensure that he can live with dignity in the village in the future, this matter will be considered settled, and you can stay with your second son's family."

Liu Xiufen's eyes darted around, and she glanced at An Dalin, already hatching her own scheme.

Judging from the way my brother and sister-in-law's family acted, they weren't really interested in this property. I don't know if they genuinely didn't care or if they were just putting on an act.

Just as she was about to speak, Li Changsheng's words made Liu Xiufen swallow her words back down her throat.

“I think it’s getting dark soon. Tomorrow morning, call everyone in the village to witness the division of your family property.”

An Daliang shook his head.

“No, that won’t do. This matter of my family dividing the property has nothing to do with the village. It’s a family matter, so we can handle it behind closed doors.”

Upon hearing this, Li Changsheng was so angry that he laughed instead.

"Da Liang family, you can't have it all by yourself. You want both face and substance?"

"Don't you even consider the consequences of what you're doing for your eldest son?"

"Are you deliberately trying to make your eldest son unable to hold his head up in the village from now on?"

An Dafeng sneered and slammed the broken cane on the table, making a loud bang.

“He was afraid that everyone in the village would talk about him behind his back, saying that he only cared about money and not his son. Brother Changsheng, I think we shouldn’t divide this family anymore. Let them live like this!”

"Wanting both face and substance? There's no such thing as a free lunch," An Dafeng said, then got up and left.

Anle glanced at An Dafeng's slightly inconvenient legs and blinked. Is there something wrong with this grandpa's legs?

The division of the family property ended so badly on the very first day, because An Dafeng and the village head both left in anger, and the family property was never divided.

As Liu Xiufen pondered her idea, the more she thought about it, the more feasible it seemed. She had just gone to bed, but then suddenly sat up on the kang (a heated brick bed) and patted Anmantun, who was already half asleep next to her.

"Mantun, get up! I need to talk to you about something."

Seeing that Anmantun was sleeping unresponsive, Liu Xiufen became furious and twisted Anmantun's arm.

"Get up right now! At this crucial moment of dividing the family property, how can you still be sleeping? You've got a lot of nerve!"

Anmantun cried out in pain as Liu Xiufen twisted his arm so hard, and he was immediately awakened by the pain.

"You old hag, what are you doing? Can't you let a person get some sleep? Can't we talk about it tomorrow?"

"No, I have to tell you now. I have a great idea that can help our family get all the assets and also save face for my brother. Do you want to listen or not?"

Upon hearing Liu Xiufen's words, An Mantun was instantly wide awake.

"What? Do you have any good ideas? The village head and your uncles are so angry with you and your parents, what good ideas do you have?"

"The best solution is in our second uncle's family. Our second uncle's family originally only had one seedling in the whole valley, but two years ago there was an accident at the mine and it was crushed to death."

Now, isn't our second uncle in need of a son to break the pot after he passes away? Why don't our parents adopt our brother to be his son?

"Wouldn't that mean our family would have a better chance of inheriting our parents' property?"

Anmantun paused for a moment, then shook his head.

“No, this is not something that should be done for our brother. According to the ancestral rules, our second cousin, Manduo, should be adopted from our eldest uncle’s family.”

Upon hearing An Mantun's words, Liu Xiufen's face immediately fell.

"So, you don't want this huge family fortune anymore, do you? Are you planning to let your brother and sister-in-law's family benefit from it all?"

Anmantun's eyebrows were tightly furrowed, and he looked troubled.

"But what you're saying isn't in accordance with the rules!"

Liu Xiufen retorted defiantly, "Anyway, I don't care. We're determined to have this property. We can't let it all go to my brother and sister-in-law's family."

Anmantun's expression changed slightly.

"Well, why don't you give it a try?"

The next evening, An Mantun returned from his work in town and shamelessly went to fetch his second uncle, An Dalin, to his home.

His wife's drama couldn't go on without her second uncle as the main character.

"Uncle, Second Uncle, Uncle Li, we have an idea that can save face for my brother and satisfy my parents."

As soon as Anmantun spoke, all the eyes in the room immediately turned to him.

"Ideas? What good ideas could you two possibly come up with?" An Dafeng glanced at An Mantun with a sarcastic tone.

Don't think he doesn't know what the second son's family is up to.

Whatever ideas they come up with, they're definitely after the family fortune. Anyone with eyes can see through their blatant scheming.

Who knows what kind of trouble they're going to cause!

Anmantun rolled his eyes, chuckled dryly, and rubbed his hands together.

"Well, if Father and Mother want to come with us, there's nothing we can do, right?"

So, to save face for my brother, I think it would be better to have him adopted by my second uncle's family. This way, our parents will be satisfied, and my brother will retain his dignity.

An Dafeng immediately lost his temper, "Nonsense, what kind of terrible idea is this?"

An Dalin sneered.

"I think this isn't about saving face for the eldest son's family, but about letting the second son's family seize all the property, isn't it?"
