Chapter 3: Fire in the Middle of the Night

"Qingtang, do you know anything about the Zhou family?"

"The Zhou family?" Qingtang looked at Jiang Mingzhi in confusion, not quite understanding why the young lady suddenly asked about this.

"Miss, are you talking about the Zhou family of the General's Mansion?" Qingtang couldn't help but feel worried when he thought of his young lady who fell seriously ill after witnessing the tragedy of the Zhou family.

Jiang Mingzhi nodded. She was not clear about the situation outside and had no idea about the Zhou family's affairs.

The first thing she had to do now was to get a grasp of the latest current events in Kyoto. Otherwise, if she relied on rumors for everything, she would be too passive.

Qingtang didn't know much about the Zhou family's affairs, so he told Jiang Mingzhi what he had heard.

"Last year, the floods in Huaibei and Huainan killed and injured over ten thousand people. This year, fearing a repeat of the tragedy, the imperial court allocated five million taels of silver to repair the dikes in Huaibei and Huainan. The silver was escorted by King Hui and General Zhou, but bandits intercepted it en route. King Hui managed to escape and returned, accusing General Zhou of colluding with the bandits. Neither General Zhou nor his wife returned. Furious, His Majesty ordered all male members of the Zhou family beheaded and the women made imperial prostitutes."

Speaking of this kind of disaster, Qingtang also sighed in his heart.

Jiang Mingzhi listened, took a deep breath, and then suppressed the hatred in his heart.

"You said General Zhou and his wife didn't come back?"

Qingtang nodded. "More than that. This time, General Zhou brought his wife and a concubine's son with him. The government silver was stolen, and General Zhou's family disappeared. That's why King Hui said that General Zhou deliberately stole the government silver and brought his family with him. It was a foreshadowing."

"Bullshit!"

Jiang Mingzhi was so angry that he slammed the table and stood up, scaring Qingtang so much that he trembled.

The young lady has always been well-behaved and has never had a quarrel with anyone, let alone such vulgar language. What happened?

"Where did you hear all this?" Jiang Mingzhi's chest was heaving and he couldn't calm down.

Qingtang replied hesitantly, "That's what's written in the official newspaper, Miss. But is there something wrong?"

At this moment, Jiang Mingzhi wished he could skin Prince Hui and Prince Jin alive with his sword. They were truly good brothers from the royal family. They had truly mastered this big drama!

She finally understood why Prince Jin had pretended to be so affectionate for ten years, but could no longer pretend on her birthday. It seemed that Prince Jin had known the inside story for a long time and knew that the Zhou family was going to fall. If she died in an unclear manner, no one would investigate and it would also clear him of suspicion as the Zhou family's son-in-law.

But now the Eastern Palace has no master. Prince Hui is the second in line and Prince Jin is the fourth in line. Both of them want to seize the throne. How could they collude to murder the Zhou family?

If everything was a conspiracy, then where did the government silver go?

Jiang Mingzhi rubbed his eyebrows, feeling heavy in his heart.

There are so many complicated relationships, and it is really difficult to find out the truth and unravel them.

But it's too early to say anything now. She is the eldest daughter who has been foolishly living in the Jinyi Marquis' Mansion for ten years. She has no friends and no money. She can hardly protect herself, let alone find out the truth. She has to deal with the troubles in front of her first.

Speaking of trouble, here comes trouble.

There were footsteps outside. Qingtang glanced at Jiang Mingzhi's expression and walked out.

"It's Madam Duan, but what are your instructions, Madam?"

Qingtang smiled and greeted Madam Duan. Madam Duan glanced into the room and said, "There's no instruction. Madam just asked us to come and see how the young lady is doing."

"The young lady is feeling much better now. Thank you very much, Madam, for your concern." Qingtang smiled and bowed in the direction of Feng's Qinghui Courtyard, then said to Madam Duan, "Please follow me into the house."

"Thank you for your help."

Mother Duan has always been kind to Qingtang. After all, he is from the Wang family, not a servant of the Jinyi Marquis Mansion.

Walking around the torn green gauze screen and entering the inner room, Jiang Mingzhi was lying on the kang by the window, leaning against a porcelain pillow. Her face was pale and she looked out the window with dull eyes, like an old tree that had seen through the vicissitudes of life. Nothing in this world could arouse her interest.

There was a bowl on the kang table, which was the medicine bowl that she had just knocked over.

When Mrs. Duan saw the bowl, a bright light flashed in her eyes, and then she smiled and walked forward to salute Jiang Mingzhi.

"This servant greets the young lady, Miss Kang An."

Jiang Mingzhi came back to his senses, nodded, turned to Qingtang and said, "I've finished the medicine, take it away."

The voice was weak and weariness was evident.

When Qingtang heard this, he understood what was going on. He told Ping'er to collect the bowls and then turned around and took out a candied fruit box from under the kang. "Miss, please have a candied fruit to sweeten your mouth and get rid of the bitter taste."

Jiang Mingzhi suddenly raised his hand, knocked over the candied fruit box, and glared at Qingtang coldly: "Bitch, I don't know, you are all hoping for my death?!"

The candied fruit box fell to the ground with a clang, and the dried plums and apricots were scattered all over the floor.

Mother Duan was startled and looked up at Jiang Mingzhi. She saw that the person who was tired and exhausted just now was now anxious and staring at them angrily.

"Miss, please calm down. I would never dare to have such thoughts!"

Qingtang was about to step forward after he finished speaking when Jiang Mingzhi's tone suddenly softened and he called out "mother", but the voice sounded like the weak voice of a kitten, so low that it was almost inaudible.

"Mother Duan, please go back first. The young lady will definitely have a seizure after drinking the medicine. I'm sorry to have embarrassed you."

Seeing this, Mother Duan didn't want to stay any longer, so she turned around and followed Qingtang out of the house.

At Qinghuiyuan, Feng felt relieved after hearing Duan Mama's reply.

She said, how could this medicine, which she had been using for many years, suddenly become ineffective?

"Madam didn't see it, but the eldest lady is so good at one moment and bad at the next. It's really scary!"
