Chapter 24 Beggar's Reward

The man sat up slowly, took out a handkerchief and wiped the mess off his face as if nothing had happened.

He stood up again, straightened his appearance, and then slowly said, "Miss, thank you for helping me."

"You're welcome, sir. It's just a small favor." Xie Yunjiao said.

"Girl, pack up all the remaining chestnuts for me," the man said.

Xie Yunjiao looked at the man in astonishment: "Sir, you are not feeling well. Eating too many chestnuts is not good for you. After all, it is difficult to digest."

There are still more than a dozen bags of chestnuts in her bamboo basket.

The man looked at Xie Yunjiao's serious expression and couldn't help but smile: "It's okay, I didn't buy it for myself, my master likes it."

So that's how it is. In that case, she wouldn't stop it. Anyway, she could make money and she was so happy.

Xie Yunjiao helped the man pack up quickly: "Sir, please take it."

The man took the chestnuts, paid for it and left.

"Sir, that's too much."

Xie Yunjiao chased after him, wanting to return the extra money to the man.

"No, it has to be worth that much. I didn't give you too much."

The man insisted, and Xie Yunjiao immediately understood what he meant.

"You misunderstood. I don't need anything in return for helping you. You just need to give me the money for Li Zi." Xie Yunjiao said.

"You misunderstood. I gave you money for the chestnuts. These chestnuts are delicious and worth so much money," said the man.

Since the man said so, Xie Yunjiao no longer insisted. After thanking the man, she closed her stall and started wandering around the town.

Suddenly, she saw someone chasing a beggar and scolding him, saying that the beggar stole their pancakes without paying.

The little beggar was caught, but he did not struggle. Instead, he said calmly, "I borrowed it from you. I will definitely return it to you in the future."

"Return?" The vendor selling sesame cakes was immediately amused by the little beggar. The beggar was in tatters, his feet were exposed from his shoes, and his face was black and white. It was obvious that he couldn't even get enough to eat. He was afraid that he would starve to death in two days. How could he get the money to return him?

"He has no money, so even if you beat him to death, you will only vent your anger. He is so thin and his body is all bones. If you hit him, you will also hurt your fist." Xie Yunjiao said.

"You woman, why are you making so much trouble? He stole my pancakes, and you're still here?"

"I'll pay it back, whatever the amount is, I'll give it to you."

"Three cents each."

Xie Yunjiao gave fifteen cents and asked the vendor to pack the other three together, and she gave the other one to the little beggar.

"Thank you. What's your name and where do you live?"

"I refuse to answer. Once you're full, go find your parents. Don't run around on the streets. It's dangerous."

"My parents are dead, and I..." The little beggar thought of something and stopped talking.

Xie Yunjiao ignored him and continued walking on the street.

But as soon as she left, the child followed.

"What exactly do you want to do?" Xie Yunjiao turned her head and looked at the little beggar unhappily.

She bought him the sesame cake out of kindness, but that doesn't mean she is the kind of person who is overly loving.

Her family is not rich, and raising another child is simply impossible for her.

He asked for her name and address, and followed her, clearly wanting to rely on her.

"My father said that a drop of kindness should be repaid with a spring. I just want to repay you." said the little beggar.

"How are you going to repay me?" Xie Yunjiao said unhappily.

He was just a child, with small arms and legs, and as thin as a monkey. He couldn't move or lift anything, and was completely useless.

Just as Xie Yunjiao was talking to the child, someone suddenly rushed to her and snatched the bag from her waist.

The little beggar immediately followed the man and ran away.

Xie Yunjiao was angry. No wonder he kept following her. It turned out that he and his accomplices had already made an agreement: one would keep her busy while the other would rob her of her money.

I'm afraid they've already set their sights on her, and they're still talking so sweetly. Repay her?!

Good intentions are never rewarded!

Xie Yunjiao naturally couldn't let them take the money away. That was what she and Gu Huai had worked hard for a whole day to earn!

She chased after him, shouting "Catch the thief" as she ran.

Everyone was stunned to see Xie Yunjiao running so fast. It was the first time they had seen such a nimble fat person.

Just as he was about to catch up, the little beggar suddenly stopped, picked up a stone from the ground and threw it at the thief in front of him.

The stone hit the thief's knee, his legs went weak and he staggered and fell to the ground.

The little beggar ran over and snatched back Xie Yunjiao's knapsack.

Xie Yunjiao chased after him, slightly out of breath.

"I didn't expect you to be so agile." The little beggar returned the knapsack to Xie Yunjiao.

Xie Yunjiao glanced at the little beggar: "Why? Do you look down on fat people?"

The little beggar choked on his own saliva, and a hint of shyness appeared on his face: "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have thought that way."

He was still stepping on the thief who had just been there. The thief tried to escape when he wasn't paying attention, but he pushed him back.

"I didn't expect that you look so frail, but you're actually quite good at catching thieves."

She had just misunderstood the child, thinking he was in cahoots with the thief.

She silently apologized to the child in her heart.

"Well, I've already paid it back. I'm leaving now."

The little beggar said goodbye to Xie Yunjiao and left.

Seeing the little beggar walking further and further away, Xie Yunjiao was a little dazed.

She thought...

Never mind, he's gone, gone.

With her current abilities, she really can't take care of another child.

She put the lost and found knapsack back on her waist, but she didn't dare put the money she had just used to buy chestnuts into the knapsack. Instead, she silently transferred the money into space with her mind.

In this way, even if someone robbed her knapsack, they could not steal her hard-earned money.

Yesterday I bought cloth, sugar and other items but forgot to buy rice. Gu Huai is a big man and has a big appetite. In addition, Doudou is still growing, so he also eats a lot.

Of course, she has a huge body, so her appetite is naturally not small.

The rice obtained from the division of the family will not last long.

As soon as she arrived at the rice shop, she saw little girls being driven out one by one. The little girls were trying to run away in panic with a wooden bucket in their hands.

Suddenly, the people in the rice shop chased out and the girl ran away.

The waiter at the rice shop couldn't help but curse, "What the hell, why are there so many beggars lately? Not only do they have no money to buy rice, but they also try to steal our rice. Aren't they afraid of being struck by lightning?"

Xie Yunjiao couldn't help but feel curious about how the little girl managed to trick the rice into eating.

The waiter at the rice shop said that the girl brought a wet wooden bucket to buy rice, and when it was full, she said she had no money and wanted to buy on credit.

When they heard they wanted to buy on credit, they naturally refused, because the girl was dressed in rags.

When the girl saw that they were unwilling to buy on credit, she poured out the rice from the wooden barrel.

They didn't notice it at first. It was only when they were sorting out the rice that they found that it was a little wet that they discovered the girl's trick.
