It was a pleasant, bright morning. The wind, carrying the sweet scent of damp flowers and dew, swept across the open fields and sky, passing through clean and tidy streets.
A little girl, about two years old, stood by the roadside. Her delicate and beautiful light green dress almost blended into the herbs behind her. The girl's eyes had the luster of emeralds, and her gaze revealed an innocent and naive confusion.
Her hair was a naturally curly, ear-length bob, which, upon closer inspection in the sunlight, had a pinkish tint—a gentle, bright, icy pink. The girl's skin was very fair, soft and delicate as if kneaded from snow, and smooth as jade.
Her face was so delicate, like a porcelain doll without any makeup.
The girl was all alone; her small figure stood silently on the empty street.
The sky grew brighter, the sun blazing forth with its warmth. More and more cars and people filled the streets, but the pedestrians seemed oblivious to her, no one approaching to inquire or show concern. The intense sun cast a shadow of indifferent indifference upon the earth.
Just then, a couple who were out buying groceries stopped in front of her. The couple looked to be nearly thirty years old; the woman had an excellent face and figure and appeared very gentle.
She didn't squat down, but simply gestured for her husband to extend his hand to the girl. The man's usually serious expression twisted into a worm-like shape, and he forced a smile, trying to appear more amiable.
"Little friend, why are you here all alone? Where are your parents? Or do you have any other family members?"
The woman scolded playfully, "She's so young, how could she possibly understand what you're asking?"
The girl tilted her head, blinked, and her eyes revealed a bewildered yet innocent look.
"Her eyes are emerald green, could she be mixed race?" the man guessed.
“What should we do? She’s all alone here, with so many cars and people coming and going. It’s not safe. But if we take her away, what if her family comes looking for her?” The woman touched her still-flat stomach. If her child were lost, she would be heartbroken and might even cry herself to death.
“Honey, why don’t we stay here with her for a while until her family comes?” The woman slowly approached the girl, revealing a kind smile, her voice gentle as water, “Don’t be afraid, we’ll stay here with you.”
The girl's eyes flickered slightly as they fell on the woman's abdomen. She vaguely saw a ball of white light nestled inside, in an extremely docile posture.
The girl suddenly reached out and placed her soft little hand on the woman's hand, calling out indistinctly, "Brother...brother..."
A car sped past, kicking up a cloud of dust. The noise of the car instantly swallowed up the girl's words.
"What?"
"Mama...ma..."
A look of surprise flashed in the woman's eyes, but she quickly regained her composure. "Poor child, he must be missing his mother."
The man glanced at his wristwatch. "Honey, let's wait another half hour. If no one comes looking for us, we'll go to the police station to report it."
...
"Sir, I'm sorry, we couldn't find any record of her in the system."
Could it be that they are unregistered? Otherwise, why would there be no record?
The couple found it strange, "Then what should we do?"
“The child will be scared if she stays here alone. Besides, your police force is mostly men, so it’s inevitable that you won’t be able to take good care of a child. Ah, officer, what I mean is that you are all quite busy and may not have time to look after her. Otherwise, let us take the child back and take care of her.”
The officer in charge, seeing the little girl clinging to the woman's clothes, knew this was the best course of action.
He said, "Here's what we'll do: leave me your contact information. If the child's family comes looking for her or calls the police, I'll hand her over to them. In the meantime, I'll leave the child in your care."
The police officer beside him quickly recognized the man as Wu Wenkai, who had topped the list of young entrepreneurs in the past two years and was worth hundreds of millions.
Before leaving, Madam Wu asked again, "If this child's family never comes, can we adopt her?"
The officer smiled and said, "It can be done through the proper procedures."
