Chapter 495: Suffering the consequences
Mrs. Cui glanced at her daughter, opened her mouth, but ultimately didn't dwell on the topic any further.
"What do we do now? They haven't had any water or food."
The practice of casting spells also requires a medium; before that, they would put the substance in tea or food.
Most of the people who come are familiar with them, so they won't be too wary of them in these matters. Once the stuff is poured in, they don't need to worry about anything else.
However, Ye Wanxi and the others did not touch the food they were given after entering the room. The only tea that was picked up was Guan Xuefen's cup, which was knocked over because of Cui's younger brother's sudden appearance.
Cui's mother had added something to the food, but Ye Wanxi and the others didn't even look at it, let alone eat it.
"Do you think they know something? Otherwise, why would they go to someone's house as guests and not even eat a meal?"
"Impossible!" As soon as Mrs. Cui finished speaking, Mr. Cui retorted with a dark face, "If they really wanted to know something, do you think they would still come?"
Mrs. Cui choked: "Then now..."
Mr. Cui rolled his eyes and said, "Go cook some noodles and take them to those two girls. Tell them it's a late-night snack, in case they eat too early and get hungry later."
"Only two girls? What about the boys?" Mrs. Cui said disapprovingly. "They came together. It would be even stranger if two of them were missing."
The subtext is that since everyone is here, if we're going to make a move, we should kill everyone to silence them.
After a moment of contemplation, Mr. Cui said coldly, "Then you go and deliver it to those men, and Yuezhen goes and deliver it to those two girls."
When Cui Yuezhen heard her name called again, she frowned and said with annoyance, "With four or five people gone all at once, we're even more of a target."
"Even if it's a big deal, there's no evidence. What can they do to us? It's settled then."
Half an hour later, Cui Yuezhen and her mother knocked on Ye Wanxi's and the others' door, each carrying several large bowls of noodles.
Guan Xuefen froze when she heard the knock, but she still remembered Ye Wanxi's instructions. She took a deep breath and went to open the door.
"Yuezhen? Is something the matter?"
“My mom was worried that you would be hungry since you ate so early at night, so she cooked some noodles for you. Please make do with these.”
Guan Xuefen glanced at the two steaming bowls of noodles on the tray, her expression turning somewhat cold, but she quickly regained her smile: "It's really too much trouble for you, Auntie, but we ate a very big meal tonight, and we've been traveling all this way, so we really don't have much of an appetite. I'm sorry to disappoint you, Auntie."
Upon hearing this, Cui Yuezhen's face darkened, and she became somewhat displeased: "Our place is remote, and there's not much to eat. The food we make certainly isn't as good as what you get in restaurants and hotels outside. But this is my mother's thoughtful gift. Even if it's just for my sake, please eat something, okay?"
Since Cui Yuezhen had already put it that way, Ye Wanxi took the opportunity to wink at Guan Xuefen. Guan Xuefen understood and quickly smiled, "Yuezhen, you've misunderstood. We really didn't mean that. Never mind, since you've said so, let's eat something."
As Guan Xuefen spoke, she reached out to take it. Cui Yuezhen then handed the item forward, but just as they were about to be handed over, Guan Xuefen abruptly withdrew her hand.
With a crash, the two bowls of noodles fell to the ground, scattering everywhere.
The incident happened so suddenly that Cui Yuezhen was completely unprepared.
After realizing what had happened, she pointed at Guan Xuefen with a flushed face and said, "You! Even if you don't want to eat, you don't need to waste food!"
As Cui Yuezhen spoke, she hurriedly squatted down to tidy up the things. This noodle contained powder made from dried and ground poisonous substances, which had an alluring effect on that thing, so it had to be cleaned up as soon as possible.
However, she was ultimately too late.
Under the pitch-black night sky, all was quiet, so much so that even the faintest sounds were exceptionally clear.
The moment Cui Yuezhen squatted down, rustling sounds could be clearly heard both inside and outside the room.
The sound was like countless tiny feet pattering on the floor, sharp and dense, giving one goosebumps.
Guan Xuefen's expression changed slightly, and she almost immediately stood in front of Ye Wanxi. Although she was trembling with fear, she still subconsciously wanted to protect others.
Seeing this, Ye Wanxi's smile deepened. When faced with danger, some people choose to sacrifice others, some choose to protect themselves, and some choose to do their best to protect others.
Cui Yuezhen also heard these sounds, but unlike Guan Xuefen, she knew about them.
Knowing this only intensified her fear. Upon seeing the countless tiny creatures crawling out of the darkness, her eyes narrowed, and she finally couldn't help but scream.
Her shout inevitably drew the attention of several people on the other side of the room.
“Someone is calling.” Feng Tianyu’s statement was a declarative sentence, not an interrogative one.
When Cui's mother heard the scream, her first reaction was, "Was everything going so smoothly on my daughter's end? The noodles were only served five minutes ago, and they're already done?"
Then she remembered to reassure them, "The two girls probably saw some cockroaches or rats and got scared. It's alright, Yuezhen just went over to bring them food. She's not afraid of these things and will clean them up soon."
"Really?" Shi Lang wasn't stupid. He glanced at the bowls of noodles that Cui's mother was holding, then looked in the direction of Ye Wanxi's room, and said with a half-smile, "But that voice just now sounded like your daughter's."
Mrs. Cui's expression froze; feeling guilty, she completely failed to realize that the person she had just called was her daughter.
Now that Shi Lang had reminded her, she belatedly realized what was going on, and her expression changed instantly.
Feng Tianyu and Shi Lang exchanged a glance, then walked past her and headed out.
Only then did Cui's mother realize what was happening and tried to stop the person, but it was too late.
When Feng Tianyu and the others arrived, Cui's father and others downstairs also rushed up after hearing the commotion.
Upon seeing the scene inside Ye Wanxi's room, everyone couldn't help but gasp.
Ye Wanxi and Guan Xuefen came out of the house at some point, and Cui Yuezhen was the one who was in the house now.
At her feet, all sorts of poisonous insects crawled in dense swarms, enough to trigger trypophobia in anyone who saw them.
The men were alright, at most their faces were a little pale, but Guan Xuefen had already hidden behind Ye Wanxi, not daring to even peek out. Whenever she recalled that scene, she couldn't help but gag from time to time.
Even though his father covered his eyes immediately, Cui's younger brother was still so frightened that he cried loudly.
Hearing his cries, Cui's mother was the first to react. She forcefully threw the noodles she was holding into the middle of the swarm of poisonous insects, grabbed a sweeping stick from the side, and tried to rush in to save her daughter, but was stopped by her husband.
