Chapter 529 Gu King
Wu Chi had just sent his grandfather home and watched as his grandfather slowly woke up.
Before they could even catch their breath, news arrived that after learning the ancestral hall had collapsed, the villagers had spontaneously gathered in groups and gone to cause trouble for Shi Yuyan.
Wu Chi was startled. Their conversation with Xiao Baihui had already shown them that this so-called AIR virus was real, and the clansmen's illness had shown signs before their return journey. This matter was most likely unrelated to Shi Yuyan and the others.
This enraged the clansmen, who went to cause trouble for Shi Yuyan and the others. Even though there were guards outside the courtyard where Shi Yuyan was imprisoned, they were outnumbered by the agitated clansmen.
Furthermore, those people were only responsible for guarding Shi Yuyan; how could they possibly fight with their own family members?
Wu Chi grew increasingly worried, fearing that if he arrived too late, Shi Yuyan would be devoured alive by his clansmen and the poisonous Gu they raised.
However, when he rushed to the villa, he was met with a strange and bizarre scene.
Outside the courtyard, the guards symbolically stopped the clansmen who came looking for trouble. Further inside, one could see all sorts of poisonous insects densely covering the ground.
Judging from their posture, they clearly wanted to use their size advantage to rush in and strike first, but in fact, these poisonous insects didn't dare to get close to that thin wooden door at all.
The reason was that a tiny creature, no bigger than a palm, was squatting on the ground in front of the door.
Wu Chi looked closely and realized that it was a toad, a toad with a smooth, snow-white body, as clear and translucent as jade!
The little jade toad squatted in front of the gate, hopping here and there, as if searching for something, or as if confirming something.
Behind him, all the poisonous creatures instinctively retreated into a small circle, prostrating themselves on the ground in submission. Some of the more timid creatures trembled with fear, afraid that if they accidentally angered the Great Demon King, they would be swallowed whole without a trace.
Wu Chi was stunned when he saw the jade toad. It took him a while to react. He grabbed the nearest clansman and asked anxiously, "What's going on? Where did that jade toad come from?"
Those who came looking for trouble were equally bewildered. Suddenly pulled aside by Wu Chi for questioning, they snapped out of their daze and said guiltily, "Young Clan Leader..."
"I'm asking you a question, answer it now!"
Seeing that Wu Chi was truly angry, the other party dared not hide anything any longer and simply recounted the whole story. After finishing, he couldn't help but mutter a defense in a low voice: "We didn't intend to do anything to him. We were just angry when we learned that the ancestral hall had collapsed, so we just wanted to scare him. We really just wanted to scare him, we didn't mean to harm him."
Wu Chi remained noncommittal, his face cold as he asked, "And what about that jade toad?"
"We don't know either! We just put those little guys in, and that jade toad jumped out of the grass. As soon as it appeared, those little guys were like mice seeing a cat, not daring to move at all. It's really weird."
Isn't that eerie? Practicing Gu poison is common in the village. Everyone knows each other's Gu worms, if not inside and out, but they've all heard of them.
Not to mention that this little jade toad is clearly no ordinary creature. The fact that there is such a powerful little thing in the village must have been widely known by now. How could anyone not have heard of it?
Upon hearing this man's words, Wu Chi became even more certain of his suspicions and hurriedly sent a young boy who had come with him back to fetch people: "Go tell my father and grandfather that there is a very, very urgent matter here and ask them to come as soon as possible."
The boy hesitated for a moment before nodding hesitantly and running off in a hurry.
Ye Wanxi and the others couldn't see much of the outside world; they could only tell whether people were still there by the sounds they heard.
"Why is it so quiet? Did they leave?"
"They haven't left; they're still guarding outside. The young clan leader is here too, whispering to someone outside; I don't know what they're saying."
Shi Lang turned to look at Ye Wanxi and the other woman, asking, "Shall we leave?"
"Wait and see what they're up to."
"Oh." The group had no objections. Having gone through so much, they had long regarded Ye Wanxi and the other person as their pillars of support. As long as they were there, everything would be fine.
At worst, if I can't win, I can run away. I'm not worried about keeping my life.
The young boy was fast on his feet and soon ran back to the Wu family.
Upon hearing Wu Chi's words, the father and son assumed that something serious had happened again, so they didn't ask any further questions and quickly had the young boy lead the way.
When they arrived at the scene, they realized it was indeed a major event, a very serious one!
"That's... the Jade Toad? Is it really the Jade Toad?" Grandpa Wu was so excited that he trembled all over, making Wu Chi extremely nervous, afraid that he would faint again from excitement.
"It's a jade toad, Grandpa. Don't get excited. Take a closer look. Doesn't it resemble the jade toad of our ancestor recorded in the family genealogy?"
When Grandpa Wu heard his grandson say this, he stared at the jade toad for a long time and became more and more excited, saying, "It looks just like it, almost exactly the same."
"Really exactly the same?" Wu Chi frowned. "Legend has it that the Jade Toad of the Ancestral Master was raised by her side since birth. During that time, it devoured countless poisonous insects, which is why it reached a state of returning to its original state. The whole toad became crystal clear, like white jade, hence the name Jade Toad."
"For hundreds of years, countless people have dreamed of raising a jade toad as their natal Gu, just like our ancestor, but all have failed. Grandpa, do you think this jade toad might be able to..."
Grandpa Wu shook his head: "Do you think the Jade Toad is so easy to raise? The reason why our ancestor was able to raise the Gu King back then was not only because of his own strength, but also because of some luck that ordinary people don't have. It can be said that the right time, the right place, and the right people were all indispensable. The current environment, ability, and inheritance conditions are not enough for anyone to raise such a Gu King again."
"That……"
Before Wu Chi could finish speaking, Wu Yan interrupted him, saying, "Dad, the ancestral hall has collapsed."
Grandpa Wu was slightly taken aback, then seemed to understand something, his eyes narrowing slightly: "Yes, the ancestral hall collapsed, the ancestral hall collapsed."
"Dad!" Wu Chi looked at Grandpa Wu's complicated expression, which seemed to want to cry and laugh at the same time, and glared at Wu Yan disapprovingly.
Grandpa has finally calmed down, why should I remind him? What if he gets agitated again and gets seriously injured?
Fortunately, Grandpa Wu was not as sad as before. Instead, he looked relieved and excited: "So that's how it is, so that's how it is?"
"What's that?"
Wu Yan glanced at his foolish son with disdain: "The ancestral hall collapsed, so the things underneath naturally came out. Or rather, it was because the things underneath wanted to come out that the ancestral hall collapsed."
This explains why the ancestral hall was moving frequently a couple of days ago.
Wu Chi pondered for a few seconds before realizing the meaning of his father's words. His eyes narrowed, and his words stammered, "You mean, this jade toad is... is..."
