Chapter 10: Childhood sweetness (10)

"This...this is what I bought!" Chu Yanyan thought of an excuse.

Shen Qihe asked coldly: "How do you have the money to buy it?"

Chu Yanyan bit her lip, crossed her arms, and looked very aggrieved: "No money."

Shen Qihe realized that he was a little too emotional. He exhaled, half-knelt down in front of Chu Yanyan, and reached out to rub the boy's soft black hair:

"I'm sorry, I was wrong just now. But you can't agree to do things for people just because of some small gifts, especially these insignificant things. If you like this little pendant, I'll buy it for you. But you can't accept things from strangers. What if you get cheated? Okay?"

As he spoke, his eyebrows raised slightly.

Chu Yanyan's clear eyes were filled with water. He stared at Shen Qihe and nodded, admitting his mistake: "I know, brother, I'm sorry."

Shen Qihe then smiled and returned the pendant to Chu Yanyan: "Remember to return this, I will buy you a new one."

"Okay." Chu Yanyan nodded.

Only then did Shen Qihe take Chu Yanyan's hand and walk back towards home.

Back to the doorstep.

Chu Yanyan said goodbye to Shen Qihe, then opened the door and walked inside, shouting into the air: "Grandma, I'm back."

There was no sound coming from the house. Chu Yanyan thought his grandmother was asleep. He walked into the house slowly, but did not see his grandmother in the small hall. He took off his schoolbag and put it down, then he heard a soft mumbling coming from the room.

He walked over, put his hand on the door handle, and listened attentively to the movement inside.

"Xiao An, Xiao An." Grandma's voice came.

Chu Yanyan pushed the door open and walked in, and saw her grandmother sitting by the bed, holding a photo and talking in a low voice.

Chu Yanyan pursed her lips and walked forward.

Grandma Chu noticed the person in front of her, looked up, and reached out to touch Chu Yanyan's head, but she was some distance away.

Chu Yanyan understood, moved closer, lifted up grandma's hand and placed it on his head, staring at the old woman with his dark eyes: "Grandma."

"Xiao An is back."

Xiao An is my grandmother’s second son, and also my second uncle.

Ever since Chu Yanyan could remember, she knew that she had no parents and was raised by her grandmother.

My eldest and second uncles only came back to visit during the Chinese New Year, but after having a meal, they left because of work.

In recent years, it has become even worse. He said that he had been promoted and couldn't spare time to come back, so he only gave money to grandma and asked her to take good care of herself.

Grandma believed their excuses and was content to have Chu Yanyan by her side at home.

Chu Yanyan had seen them several times, and now the appearances of his uncles and second uncles were already blurry in his mind.

He hated them very much, and because of them, his grandmother was sad for a long time. In order to prove that he and his grandmother were fine without those uncles, Chu Yanyan cooked rice for lunch before going to school every day, and started to pull Shen Qihe to teach him how to cook, go to the vegetable market to buy vegetables, clean the house, and do laundry.

But as my grandmother grew older, she always called the wrong person, mistaking him for the appearance of my eldest or second uncle when they were little.

Grandma must miss them a lot, right?

Chu Yanyan hugged her grandmother, tears streaming down her face. "Grandma, I'm Yanyan."

Grandma Chu's eyes were dazed for a moment, like a child who had made a mistake: "I'm sorry Yanyan, I called the wrong person."

Chu Yanyan leaned on the old woman's shoulder and secretly wiped away a tear: "It's okay. Grandma, I'll make you whatever you like to eat."

"I want to drink meat porridge." Grandma Chu said softly.

In the past two years, Grandma Chu's teeth have been getting worse year by year.

"Okay." Chu Yanyan came out of her grandmother's arms, helped her lie down on the bed, let her back lean against the wall, and lay there for a while.

Then he went out and cooked porridge for his grandmother.

Place the minced pork in a rice cooker, add water, peanut oil, and half a teaspoon of salt. Cover the rice cooker and set it to porridge mode.

He remembered something and quickly walked to the drawer of the cabinet in front of the desktop TV. He rummaged through it and finally found the yellowed notebook. He closed the drawer and opened the palm-sized notebook. On the first page he saw the names and contact numbers of his uncle and second uncle.

He quickly stood up, glanced at the old man in the room, and then walked out.

It turned out that Shen Qihe was sitting in the yard doing his homework, and there were fiery red clouds in the sky.

There was a knock on the door. He put down his pen, walked over, and opened the door. He saw Chu Yanyan, whose eyes were red and swollen from crying. His red scarf was tugged crookedly to the side. His heart skipped a beat: "Yanyan, what's wrong with you?"

Chu Yanyan raised the notebook in her hand and handed it to Shen Qihe, her voice filled with tears: "Brother, please...help me call my uncle back."

Shen Qihe squatted down, hugged Chu Yanyan, stood up, and walked quickly towards Chu Yanyan’s house: “Is something wrong with grandma?”

Chu Yanyan shook his head and grabbed Shen Qihe's hand: "Brother, grandma is fine, she just wants to see uncle, call them to come back and take care of grandma. Woo woo."

As Chu Yanyan spoke, she could no longer control herself and began to cry in Shen Qihe's arms.

"What's going on?" Chen Yurong had just returned from the factory. Seeing Shen Qihe holding someone and hearing Chu Yanyan crying, she thought they were having a conflict.

Chu Yanyan heard Chen Yurong's voice and saw that it was her. "Aunt Chen, do you have a cell phone? Can you help me call my uncle and the others to come back?"

Shen Qihe turned his head and looked at his mother: "Mom, call Grandma Chu's sons, I'll take Yanyan back to the house."

"Okay." Chen Yurong looked anxious and nodded.
