Yuhuang Temple
When Wen Ya came out of the library and returned to the front hall, Si Mucheng was already arm in arm with his junior brother, looking like good brothers.
Upon seeing Wen Ya return, Wen Xiaofeng, who had been patrolling the open space in front of the Ancestral Master's Hall like a territorial roamer ever since entering the Taoist temple, enthusiastically flew back onto her shoulder.
Hearing the noise, Si Mucheng's eyes lit up, and he waved to her, "Master!" He was clearly adapting very well to his new identity.
Wen Ya found herself helpless against Si Mucheng's shameless behavior. She ignored Si Mucheng's form of address and simply said to him, "You go back first, I'll stay here for two days."
Si Mucheng, of course, wouldn't listen to her and spread his hands: "I want to live here too."
“You,” Wen Ya knew he was determined to follow her, “there’s no place for you to stay here.”
“Of course there is,” Si Mucheng had already found out. “There is a guest room here. How come outsiders can stay, but I, their disciple and grand-disciple, cannot?”
Well, he quite likes to assign himself different identities.
Zhao Wentian couldn't help but chuckle and started to take advantage: "Hey, then you'd have to call me 'Uncle-Master'?"
Wen Ya just wanted him to stop causing trouble, but Si Mucheng immediately complied: "Uncle Zhao." Then he turned to his junior brother and said, "Uncle Zhao, can't I stay here?"
“You can stay here,” the junior brother quickly replied. “There’s no one else in the temple right now, it’s very empty, you can all stay here.”
Upon hearing this, Si Mucheng raised an eyebrow at Wen Ya with a smug look on his face.
Wen Ya lost her temper and turned to leave with Wen Xiaofeng.
So they settled down at Yuhuang Temple.
Si Mucheng successfully stayed by Wen Ya's side through his shamelessness, and he was very satisfied. He sent a message to Aunt Chen at home, asking her to help him collect some clothes and supplies and call a car to deliver them to Yuhuang Mountain.
Aunt Chen was used to Si Mucheng's sudden whims. This child was always restless during holidays and would go anywhere. In his mother Chen Hui's words, "He's like a nail stuck in his butt and can't sit still at home." Besides, Si Mucheng had been wild since he was a child, and his family never restricted him, so they let him do as he pleased.
When it was time for dinner that evening, everyone else from Yuhuang Temple returned, and they filled a large table. Some of them, like the junior brother, had grown up in the temple since childhood and naturally knew Wen Ya. Others had joined later and, upon seeing the newcomer, couldn't help but inquire about her.
However, Wen Ya was not very talkative when she was young, and during her year at Yuhuang Temple, she only became somewhat familiar with Zhao Wentian and her junior brother. Therefore, those who knew her did not come up to greet her, but only quietly introduced her background to their fellow disciples.
As for Si Mucheng, chatting was his forte and social skills were his strengths. Whether he knew them or not, he could win them over after they flew around like a butterfly. In no time, he had become one of the people in the Taoist temple.
Even Zhao Wentian, who was standing to the side, was amazed. He exclaimed, "Your disciple is quite complementary to you." Wen Ya remained silent, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.
The food at the temple suited Simu Cheng's taste perfectly. He never stood on ceremony, so he ate until his belly was round and couldn't sleep at night.
Because it's located in the mountains, the Taoist temple is quite cool at night, to the point where you need a small blanket. However, there are also many mosquitoes. Fortunately, the temple has its own herbal incense, which you can use to fumigate the temple at night to keep the mosquitoes away.
There wasn't much entertainment at the temple, so everyone would go to their rooms to rest after evening prayers. Si Mucheng was stuffed and hadn't expended any energy, so he tossed and turned in bed for a while before finally getting up, grabbing a flashlight, and heading out.
I couldn't sleep, so I went for a walk in the back hill.
Although it was dark outside, Si Mucheng wasn't afraid. After all, this was a Taoist temple, full of exorcism masters; he figured no ghost would dare to wander around here. During the day, his junior brother had mentioned a viewing platform on the back mountain with a nice view of the scenery below. Si Mucheng suddenly had a whimsical idea: he wanted to go see the night view.
However, at this time of year, there's a risk of snakes in the mountains.
When he reached the observation deck, he found that there were already people there.
Si Mucheng blinked in surprise, recognizing the person: "Wen Ya?"
Hearing the noise, Wen Ya turned around and saw Si Mucheng laughing: "Can't sleep either? Where's Wen Xiaofeng?"
Wen Ya replied softly, "You went out to play, didn't you?"
Si Mucheng chuckled, "This chicken... does it have any friends in the mountains? It's out playing in the middle of the night."
"Didn't you also sneak out in the middle of the night?" Wen Ya said calmly.
Si Mucheng chuckled to himself; this guy was way too protective of his own. "And you? Are you coming to play too?"
Wen Ya gave a vague "hmm" and then fell silent.
"By the way," Si Mucheng thought of what happened during the day, "are all those black things you absorbed from Li Huaming alright? What were they?"
Wen Ya looked at him in surprise, then realized that he also had the ability to see ghosts, and a strange feeling suddenly welled up in her heart.
Among the exorcists who exorcise souls in the modern world, only Wen Ya has the ability to see ghosts. Everyone says she is highly talented, and most of the praise is actually for her eyes.
When I was young, there were other younger students from other families studying at Yuhuang Temple. At that time, someone said with great dissatisfaction, "What are you so arrogant about? You were just born into a good family."
She initially wanted to retort by saying, "Being born into a good family is also awesome," but after thinking about it, she felt it was pointless and didn't say anything.
Zhao Wentian also said that her Yin-Yang Eyes were like having a cheat code, allowing her to see things that others couldn't, whether it was ghosts or anything else. But since she had this cheat code, it was her fate; otherwise, why would only she have it?
She used to think that since others couldn't see it, there was no need for her to explain so much. But now, there was someone who could see it, which gave her a strange feeling, as if a lone wolf had been wandering alone on a vast snowfield for many years, but one day it suddenly encountered another wolf that looked exactly like itself. She suddenly felt that she had found a fellow traveler.
Wen Ya chuckled at her own sudden burst of imagination. Si Mucheng, oblivious, stared at her with wide, puppy-dog eyes. Wen Ya sighed and explained, "That's resentment."
"What?" Si Mucheng's eyes widened, and his expression turned grim after he realized what was happening. What kind of thing was sucking him in? "Isn't it harmful to your health? Ghostly resentment is terrifying."
Wen Ya simply beckoned to him: "Come here."
Si Mucheng's face turned ashen, but he still obediently walked over. The surrounding area was filled with the chirping of insects in the woods and the rustling sounds of small animals crawling by. There was no light pollution, only moonlight, making it difficult for Si Mucheng to see clearly.
Wen Ya opened her hand, and suddenly tiny yellow specks of light appeared in her palm. Si Mucheng stared at this scene in astonishment. Wen Ya's clear voice was now slightly hoarse: "The obsession of the deceased is resentment. If one is entangled in resentment, there is no way to be reborn. Only by dispelling those obsessions can the ghost be exorcised without resentment. Today, the situation in the evil spirit's dream was too urgent. Li Huaming's resentment was too heavy to be dispelled. I could only draw the resentment from 'him' onto myself, dispel 'him', and then find a way to dispel it."
"Did you resolve it?" Si Mucheng asked hurriedly.
Wen Ya smiled and said, "This is Li Huaming's resentment." She shook her hand, and the yellow light spots in her palm scattered instantly, flying into the sky in an endless stream.
Si Mucheng watched as the beam of light slowly disappeared into the woods, like a bridge formed by fireflies. He couldn't help but exclaim, "This... the resentment of that evil spirit is actually so beautiful?"
Under the soft yellow light, the smile in Wen Ya's eyes became even more pronounced. She said, "Yes, I have to thank that evil spirit. If 'he' hadn't been so resentful, there wouldn't have been so many."
Si Mucheng chuckled. How could this not be a hellish joke? "Were you venting your anger here before?"
The fireflies in Wen Ya's palm gradually stopped, and the last few slowly caught up with the main group, then flew into the woods and disappeared. She lowered her hand and admitted, "The moonlight is beautiful tonight, perfect for dispelling those resentful spirits."
Si Mucheng looked at her profile and suddenly said, "Teach me something."
Wen Ya turned to look at him, only to find his expression serious, unlike the mischievous way he had called her "Master" that afternoon. She paused, then said, "You're not a Celestial Master, none of this concerns you. You should live your own life."
“But now it’s relevant,” Si Mucheng said matter-of-factly. “Besides, Brother Zhao said that the ability to see ghosts is very rare. Now that I’ve obtained it, isn’t that like getting a magical treasure? I have to use it, otherwise it’ll be a waste.”
Wen Ya didn't know what to say for a moment, mainly because Si Mucheng's twisted logic sounded plausible.
"Just teach me. Besides, what if I encounter something like that evil spirit again and get trapped inside? Teach me something to save my life, so at least I won't have to wait for you to rescue me next time."
Si Mucheng nudged her with his arm and drawled, "Please, please~"
Wen Ya didn't really want Si Mucheng to get involved in these things. After all, this industry is all about family inheritance, and Si Mucheng is a latecomer to it. Who knows what kind of situation might arise?
But he's right. He has the ability to see ghosts, so even if he keeps hiding, his constitution makes him prone to seeing ghosts. If he encounters evil spirits again, he definitely needs some way to protect himself.
Seeing that Wen Ya remained silent, Si Mu Cheng continued his efforts: "Please, sister~" Before he could finish speaking, he froze. It was because he used to be a little cheeky when he was with Dali and the others, knowing how to annoy them. Sometimes, if Dali and the others didn't grant him a request, he would call them "brother, brother," and although he would get scolded by them afterward, he would eventually get what he wanted.
So his reaction was subconscious, but as soon as the words left his mouth, he knew in his heart that he was done for and had gone too far. Given Wen Ya's temper, it was already a favor that she didn't throw a talisman at him to shut him up.
Si Mucheng froze, not daring to speak, hoping in his heart that Wen Ya wouldn't be too angry.
After waiting a while, Wen Ya finally spoke: "Let's start practicing drawing talismans tomorrow. Be serious, don't be as carefree as before." After saying that, she walked off the viewing platform.
Si Mucheng was stunned for a moment before he finally understood the meaning behind Wen Ya's words. His eyes lit up, and he shamelessly followed her again: "You agreed? Great God?"
"You really agreed to teach me?"
"You've agreed to be my master??"
"Master? Master! Master~"
"……Shut up."
