Chapter 123 Han Yubin: It's None of My Business
Inside the hospital
Zhizhi was panting as she ran, and she pointed to her parents at the end of the hospital corridor, holding Aunt Cuiping's hand.
"Quick! Uncle Zhengyang is right here, let's hurry!"
Cuiping quickened her pace and ran ahead. She had gotten up in a hurry in the middle of the night, and didn't even have time to comb her hair. She hurriedly put on her clothes and rode her bicycle over.
She rushed to the riverbank and stood before him, her eyes welling up with tears.
"How is he? What did the doctor say?!"
Jiang Anchao wiped his face, stared at the closed ward door, and said in a heavy tone, "I was shot while subduing the bandits. Fortunately, it was still some distance from my heart, but I haven't passed the coma yet. The doctor said... postoperative infection is the most dangerous thing, so tonight is a matter of life and death."
"How could it be so serious?!"
Cuiping's tears fell in a stream, and it felt as if countless needles were piercing her heart, with a fine, persistent pain spreading throughout her limbs.
He's always been incredibly capable; he's always the one who steps up in times of crisis. So why is he constantly teetering on the edge of life and death?
Jiang Anchao sighed, "I knew Zhizhi would call you over, so I waited for you here for a while. Now that you're here, stay and watch over things. The attending physician just said that he was brought in too late and his body is already showing signs of infection. There's an antibiotic that requires Han Yubin's signature to get, so I have to go back and get him to come and help."
"Okay, okay, you go quickly, I'll stay here and keep watch!"
Cuiping stood at the door, looking lost and dejected. Her anxious gaze seemed to want to be glued to the person on the hospital bed through the glass of the door frame.
But the distance was too far, and she could only watch the nurses bustling around inside, unable to do anything herself.
When Zhizhi saw that Aunt Cuiping had finished talking with her father, she quickly ran out to follow her.
"Dad, Uncle Han signed the papers and got the medicine, so it will save Uncle Zhengyang, right? Uncle Zhengyang will be alright, right?"
“Dad doesn’t know, but the doctor said penicillin is the most effective. Your Uncle Zhengyang has developed a high fever. I just called him, but the people at the military dependents’ hospital said they couldn’t reach him. Dad has to go back and see what’s going on.”
Jiang Anchao wasn't entirely sure what was going on either.
But since the doctor said this medicine is the most effective, it must be the only solution at the moment.
Whether it works or not, he will try his best.
Zhizhi thought for a moment and then quickly said, "Then go back to the military dependents' home to find Uncle Han. This is a matter of life and death. Uncle Han is probably just sleeping too soundly to be woken up. Dad, you should go quickly!"
Jiang Anchao stopped and took his daughter's hand.
"I'm going back, aren't you going back? Come on, it's not safe for a little kid to be here so late at night."
He was traumatized when Zhizhi was abducted by human traffickers last time.
He had to take his daughter with him to prevent her from running around. Cuiping needed some peace and quiet at this time, so he didn't want the child to cause any trouble.
The father and daughter rode their bicycles home. Jiang Anchao was extremely anxious, pedaling so hard that he almost felt sparks fly from the chain. Fortunately, the military hospital was only a ten-minute walk from the military dependents' home. He stopped his bicycle and immediately ran into Grandma Li's yard to knock on the door.
"Dr. Han, Old Han! Wake up! Wake up! Something's happened!"
"Wake up! Come back to the hospital with me right now and sign some papers. I need penicillin!"
"Old Han! Old Han! Can you hear me?"
Jiang Anchao spoke anxiously, his voice low, afraid that raising his voice would attract Grandma Li's attention. The old woman was getting on in years, and if she found out that her own son was in danger, she might become emotional and something bad might happen to her, which would be even more troublesome.
The gate of the Han family remained unmoved, and a cold wind whistled through the air. Even Zhizhi couldn't help but touch the tips of her stiff ears.
She paced back and forth anxiously, not knowing what was going on at Uncle Han's house. She had been calling outside for ten minutes, but there was still no response.
The people outside were extremely anxious. Standing outside in the freezing cold, the moonlight seemed to have sprinkled a layer of silver frost on the ground.
Fengmei, who was inside the door, had already been woken up. She turned over and nudged her husband beside her.
"Old Han, it sounds like Jiang Anchao is calling you from outside."
With such a commotion, Han Yubin naturally woke up. He listened carefully to what Jiang Anchao was saying outside, then calmly closed his eyes again.
His tone was indifferent, as if it were none of his business. "Penicillin is a potent drug. He couldn't possibly get it without my signature. This kind of drug is usually for meningitis in children or systemic infections in adults. Recently, no high-ranking officers in the military have been sick. I guess it's his child who's sick. I can't be bothered with it."
He had rushed to apologize to the Jiang family, only to be met with such disrespect from them.
Now they need my help, they're begging me for favors, huh!
They've certainly made a clever plan, but why should I do as they please?
They were the ones who tried to win your favor but were met with indifference; now it's time for them to experience the same thing.
Fengmei hesitated, pursing her lips. "What if something happens in the army... ...wouldn't that be considered dereliction of duty?"
"You're overthinking it. If the boss really had something going on, I would have found out while I was at work and proactively delivered the medicine to him to sell. Why would he need to come and notify me? You're just too sentimental. Have you forgotten how Zhizhi embarrassed you?"
Han Yubin's voice was very low, like a couple having a late-night chat.
However, the gloating in his tone was impossible to hide. "Let him shout, let him shout all he wants, let him know what it means to be helpless and have no one to turn to. Otherwise, he might really think I'm a stubborn person."
Fengmei thought about it and felt that what he said made a lot of sense.
She unconsciously wore a mocking smile. "Could it be that his daughter is sick? Then let it drag on, and hopefully she'll develop cerebral palsy. I get so angry just looking at her."
He's such a young person, and he even swallowed his pride to beg for forgiveness, yet they still won't forgive him.
Serves you right!
"Oh, by the way, if they come to question us tomorrow, just say I was too drunk to wake up and you didn't hear me. We have to make sure this lie is convincing and doesn't give ourselves away."
"I know, I know, go to sleep!"
Han Yubin pulled the blanket over his head and fell fast asleep again.
Outside the door
Zhizhi gently tugged at her father's sleeve, a cloud of white mist coming from her mouth as she spoke.
"Dad, we still can't wake Uncle Han up. What should we do? We can't really delay Uncle Zhengyang's treatment."
The little cub was extremely anxious.
"You can't wake someone who's pretending to be asleep, no matter how you call them. I'll remember this!"
Jiang Anchao's expression darkened, and he picked up his daughter and walked out.
"Zhizhi, let's go, let's not beg him!"
Jiang Anchao returned home in a rage. He was anxious and heartbroken, wishing he could kick down the Han family's door and force them to sign the papers so he could get his medicine. But such an action would inevitably wake up Grandma Li.
He paced back and forth in the house, racking his brains for a long time but couldn't come up with a solution.
Zhizhi, on the other hand, calmed down completely. She returned to her bedroom without saying a word, and a little while later, a small porcelain bottle appeared in her pocket.
The father and daughter exchanged a glance and spoke almost simultaneously:
"Dad, I think I have a way to save Uncle Zhengyang!"
"Zhizhi, do you know where Commander Ji lives?"
