Yan Qiyu felt something was strange, but couldn't figure out what was wrong, so he remained silent for a moment.
Mr. Du didn't say anything more: "For your homework today, Miss Yan, you practice ten large characters. Yan Qiyu, you memorize the first ten pages of this book and then practice three more large characters."
They both agreed at the same time.
Mr. Du said, "Alright, you can start reading now."
The books for the two people had been selected by Mr. Du long ago and placed on their desks.
Mr. Du also picked up a book and started flipping through it: "If there's anything you don't understand, come ask me again."
"yes."
Neither of them spoke, and they began to read.
Mr. Du, however, was not so calm. He noticed that Yan Shujin was particularly perceptive about certain things, but he didn't know whether such perceptiveness was a good or bad thing for a young woman. He just felt that it was a pity that Yan Shujin was born a woman.
When it got dark, Yan Zhili returned home. He had already finished eating with his mother in the palace. Because he had sent a message home in advance, Liu Qin and her two children did not wait for him, but they did leave some late-night snacks in the kitchen.
Yan Shujin and Yan Qiyu were waiting for him inside. When they saw their two children, Yan Zhili's expression softened considerably, and he smiled and asked, "How did you do in school today?"
"Mr. Du is very capable." Yan Qiyu's eyes were full of admiration when she mentioned Mr. Du: "Extremely capable."
Yan Zhili laughed heartily: "Of course."
Liu Qin poured Yan Zhili a glass of warm water and said, "Let your father rest for a while."
Yan Shujin and Yan Qiyu obediently agreed.
Yan Zhili drank some water and said with a smile, "Dad will chat with you guys in a bit."
Liu Qin accompanied Yan Zhili into the house to change his clothes. Seeing that he looked tired, she said softly, "Should I let the children go back and rest first?"
"No need." Yan Zhili smiled and squeezed his wife's hand. "I only have this much time each day to chat with the children."
Liu Qin then stopped saying anything.
Yan Zhili said, "Once I'm done with this busy period, I'll show you around the capital."
Liu Qin agreed, her eyes crinkling as if they had met for the first time.
Yan Zhili said gently, "If I remember correctly, Sister Bao and Brother Gui won't need to take medicinal baths anymore after today, right?"
“Yes.” Liu Qin helped her husband straighten his collar. “The imperial physician said that food is worse than medicine, so we should eat more refined food.”
Yan Zhili: "That's good. I'll take you to the palace the day after tomorrow."
Liu Qin hesitated for a moment and said, "I won't go yet. I'm still using medicine, and I'm bound to have a bit of a smell. I'm afraid my mother will worry if she finds out."
Yan Zhili thought for a moment and said, "I want you to keep your sister-in-law company and talk to her."
Liu Qin was taken aback and asked, "Is something wrong, sister-in-law?"
Yan Zhili sighed: "My sister-in-law still can't let go of Jiawang's death."
Mentioning Jiawang, Liu Qin's heart ached, and she understood Chen Qiu's grief even more; if it were her, she probably wouldn't have been able to get over it either: "Alright, what should we say if Mother asks?"
Yan Zhili smiled upon hearing this and leaned close to Liu Qin's ear, saying, "Just tell your mother that the imperial physician will help you regulate your body so that you can give me another big, fat son and give your mother another big, fat grandson."
Liu Qin blushed instantly, bit her lip slightly, and responded softly.
When the two of them went out, Liu Qin's face was still a little red, but Yan Shujin and Yan Qiyu did not notice.
After Yan Zhili pulled Liu Qin to sit down, he asked, "Is there anything you don't understand about what Mr. Du said today?"
Yan Qiyu said, "I understand, but when my sister asked the teacher a question, the teacher told her to ask my father."
Yan Zhili raised an eyebrow, somewhat curious, and asked, "What's the problem?"
Yan Shujin recounted Su Hu's story without asking any questions. She simply said, "Father, have all the servants in the room leave. I don't want them to hear."
Yan Zhili was amused and said, "Alright, you can all go down."
The maids serving in the room all withdrew.
Seeing that people were about to close the door, Yan Shujin said, "Don't close the doors and windows, and stay away from them."
Seeing that Yan Zhili did not object, the maid did as Yan Shujin instructed.
Seeing Yan Shujin's serious expression, Yan Zhili felt much better and asked, "Why didn't you close the doors and windows?"
