Chapter 27 The Change of the Country Bumpkin

Yan Qiyu was waiting for Yan Shujin. She scurried over on her short legs and said, "Sister, something happened at Mr. Li's house."

Yan Shujin raised an eyebrow and asked, "What happened?"

Yan Qiyu said with a serious expression, "I don't know."

Yan Shujin: "Then how did you know something had happened?"

Yan Qiyu said, "Mr. Li arrived at class a little late, and he looked a bit unwell, but when I asked him, he wouldn't tell me."

“Then you should talk to your father or mother,” Yan Shujin said. “But let’s go see Mr. Li first and see if there’s anything we can do to help.”

Yan Qiyu walked beside Yan Shujin and said, "I asked the kitchen to make some pastries. Let's take them to Mr. Li."

Yan Shujin pinched Yan Qiyu's cheek. Everything was arranged, and they were just waiting for her to come back.

Yan Qiyu didn't need a maid; she simply picked up the food box herself and said, "Sister, let's go."

Mr. Li's courtyard was next to Mr. Du's, but since Mr. Li was part of the family, his courtyard was larger. When Yan Shujin and Yan Qiyu arrived, Mr. Li was taking a walk with his wife.

Mr. Li's wife was dressed in thick clothes and looked somewhat pale. She was helping Mr. Li into the house.

"Please wait a moment," Mr. Li said. "I'll be right out."

Yan Shujin said, "It's alright, sir, there's no need to rush."

Mrs. Li smiled at them. She was still not fully recovered, and even though she knew it wasn't contagious, she was still worried about passing on her illness to the two children.

Li Yue came out of the house: "Father, I'm here."

Mr. Li looked at his daughter with a hint of heartache in his eyes and said, "Okay."

Li Yue said, "Princess and Prince, shall we rest in the flower hall for a while?"

Yan Shujin took the food box from her younger brother and handed it over: "These are freshly made pastries. Try them and see if they suit your taste."

Li Yue thanked them and accepted the gift, saying, "Thank you, Princess and Prince."

Yan Shujin wasn't really good at dealing with people like Li Yue, so she didn't say anything more and took her younger brother to sit down in the flower hall.

The maid brought over tea and snacks, which Li Yue arranged, and then stood quietly to one side.

Yan Qiyu glanced at Li Yue and then at Yan Shujin.

Yan Shujin said, "Sister Li, please sit down too."

Li Yue thanked him before sitting down.

Yan Shujin asked directly, "Sister Li, is something wrong at home? Mr. Li doesn't seem to be in a good mood today."

Li Yue didn't hide anything: "It's because of my marriage. I was rejected by the other party."

The engagement was called off?

Yan Shujin looked at Li Yue and found that she was calm and didn't seem to care about the matter at all. But being rejected by someone is a big deal, isn't it?

Seeing Yan Shujin and Yan Qiyu both looking stunned, Li Yue smiled. When she wasn't smiling, she seemed a little unapproachable, but when she smiled, it was like spring flowers blooming, making people feel warm all over: "It's obvious, but I didn't expect their family not to even bother to come up with an excuse."

As they were talking, Mr. Li came in. Li Yue stood up, looked at Mr. Li, and said, "Father, I really don't care anymore."

Mr. Li gritted his teeth and said, "This isn't a matter of whether I care or not; their family has gone too far."

Yan Shujin asked, "Sir, what exactly happened?"

Mr. Li clenched his fist before saying, "Sister Yue and Luo Zhengyao got engaged a few years ago, but it was delayed by many things. My family fell into decline, and the Luo family did not mention the marriage. I was thinking of waiting until my wife was better before asking the Luo family properly. If they were unwilling, I would return Sister Luo's marriage certificate and tokens."

"I never expected to hear that Luo Zhengyao is getting married." Mr. Li gritted his teeth and said, suppressing his anger, "With their family like this, I never intended to marry Yue-jie off to them. I just wrote to ask for Yue-jie's birth chart and engagement tokens, but not only did they refuse to return them, they also took the tokens and said that for Yue-jie's own good, they wanted to take Yue-jie as a concubine."

Yan Qiyu stared in disbelief and said, "This is too... too bad!"

Yan Shujin said directly, "They're shameless."

Mr. Li was still angry, but upon hearing Yan Shujin's words, he said, "Princess, speak..."

“Speak more politely,” Yan Shujin continued. “I know, sir, but the Luo family is shameless. Is there any other way to describe them? Heartless and ungrateful? Beast in human form? Malicious? Vicious? Ambitious?”

Mr. Li shook his head helplessly.

Yan Shujin asked, "What do you plan to do, sir?"

Mr. Li paused for a moment. He didn't want to make a big fuss because it concerned his daughter's reputation. Even if he wanted revenge, he would wait a few years: "I'll get the birth certificate and keepsake back."

"How many people know that Sister Li and he are engaged?" Yan Shujin asked. "Did you two secretly get engaged back then?"

Mr. Li said, "Not many, because the court was not peaceful at that time."

Actually, that was a euphemism. At that time, it was during the time when Yan Shujin's uncle and father rebelled, and the imperial court was in chaos.

Yan Shujin said, "Then let's beat them up and force the Luo family to hand over the things. We should also tell the girl who is going to marry Luo Zhengyao about this, so that she doesn't unknowingly fall into a trap."

Mr. Li was at a loss for words. It seemed that everything was very simple and easy to resolve when it came to Yan Shujin, and this was indeed the most convenient solution.

Yan Shujin said, "Why don't you leave this matter to me, sir?"

Mr. Li looked at Yan Shujin.

Yan Shujin said with a grin, "I've heard Mr. Du mention the Luo family. I'm here to avenge you."
