Chapter 27: It’s Just a Matter of Need

Chapter 27 It’s just a matter of each taking what they need

The only difference was that the person standing next to Mr. Chen changed from Mrs. Chen to Aunt An.

As soon as Lu Wanning got off the carriage, Aunt An immediately smiled and hurried over to greet her.

Mr. Chen stood beside Qi Muchao and greeted him with a smile.

Only Chen Wenjian's eyes fell on the two of them, unable to tell whether he was happy or angry.

Lu Wanning understood Aunt An's personality and knew that Madam Chen's affairs in the past two days must have made her nervous, so she came early today.

The wounds on Mr. Chen's face caused by Mrs. Chen's scratches had not yet healed, and the scabs had just formed, looking very scary.

Lu Wanning covered her lips in surprise and asked, "What happened to the master?"

Master Chen cleared his throat and laughed dryly, "Nothing, the second girl picked up a cat from outside. It has a wild personality and scratched me a few times when I wasn't watching it."

A cat scratched it? Lu Wanning sneered in her heart, thinking it must have been that crazy Madam Chen who scratched it.

It wasn't lunch time yet, so she smiled at Qi Muzhao and said, "My husband, stay here and talk to the master. I'll go and keep my aunt company."

After saying that, she simply ignored Qi Muchao's narrowed eyes, turned a blind eye to his obviously resentful expression, and returned to the yard with Aunt An's arm around her.

As soon as she entered, Aunt An immediately closed the door, pulled her to the bedside, and asked in a low voice, "What's wrong with Madam?"

Lu Wanning smiled and said, "Aunt, you're asking the wrong question. You should ask Concubine Liu, who was killed by her. After all, it's Concubine Liu who wants to kill her now. It has nothing to do with me."

She was just casually helping those who wanted to kill Madam Chen.

Who told her to make so many enemies?

But Aunt An wouldn't believe it. When Aunt Liu heard her say that, her face changed. "Nonsense! If the dead could come to claim lives, there wouldn't be so many injustices in this world. They might as well all turn into evil spirits and drag the murderers to hell."

Perhaps thinking of her sister and brother-in-law who died in unclear circumstances, Aunt An's eyes reddened. Worried that Lu Wanning would see her emotions and get hurt, she quickly suppressed her tears, "You know what Aunt means. Now that you're married into Prince Qi's mansion, just focus on living your life well and don't get involved in the affairs of the Chen Mansion."

Lu Wanning wiped away Aunt An's tears that were falling like beads from a broken string with her fingertips. She said helplessly, "Aunt, Madam Chen has suffered this fate because of her own fault. The evil spirits in hell can't seek revenge, but the truth will come to light. She will definitely be punished for the evil she did."

"It's not me who is so eager to ask Madam Chen for an explanation now."

Aunt An glared at her with red eyes, "Who else could it be?"

"Madam Liu."

Nonsense, how can a dead person come back to seek revenge?

She had gone to see Concubine Liu hang herself that year, and her body was already hard, so how could she fake it?

Seeing Aunt An's eyes suddenly widen, Lu Wanning chuckled, "I will stay at the Chen Mansion tonight. Aunt, please wait. The real show hasn't really started yet."

Aunt An was frightened by her words.

Her eyes were filled with anxiety and fear as she looked at Lu Wanning. She seemed to have difficulty recognizing Lu Wanning.

In her opinion, Lu Wanning was bold, but she should be as smart and clever as her mother, and definitely not someone who would focus on the backyard.

She didn't blame Lu Wanning for seeing all these terrible things. She just thought it was because she failed to protect her, which forced a little girl who knew nothing to fight with Madam Chen, an old monster.

She clutched Lu Wanning's arm and cried inconsolably, thinking that it was the incident with Wu Er last time that forced Lu Wanning to this point.

"It's all my aunt's fault, it's all my aunt's fault..."

Lu Wanning pursed her lips, supported her shoulders and forced her to look at her, "Don't blame you, don't blame me, aunt, it's these people, this world that forced us to do this."

"Have you considered what I told you earlier?"

Aunt An hesitated, "What?"

"Replace Madam Chen," Lu Wanning said calmly, "If you want to stay in the Chen family, the only way for me to feel at ease is to replace Madam Chen. Otherwise, I won't let you stay here."

"But if I don't stay here, where else can I go?" Aunt An was puzzled, her eyes full of confusion.

"Anywhere is fine."

Lu Wanning didn't dare to take any risks before, always feeling that if they left, the many dangers outside would be even more difficult for two women to avoid.

But the look on Mr. Chen's face when he threatened her with her aunt that day made her waver again.

She couldn't bear to see her aunt spending her life with such a man and having children with him.

My aunt can stay for the wealth of the Chen family and for stability, but she can never stay because she loves Master Chen.

He is not worthy of his aunt.

"But you and Prince Qi are already married, and I think he treats you well—"

"Aunt." Lu Wanning interrupted her, "I married Prince Qi because he is a pretty good choice for me. Between him and me, we only get what we need."

She was very sure that she didn't love Qi Muchao.

She knew that her aunt's thoughts would not be shaken so quickly, and she only hoped that after what happened tonight, her aunt would be a little more aware.

Lu Wanning sighed, "I'll go to the front hall and take a look."

"Prince." The servant's voice came.

Lu Wanning was startled. She opened the door and looked at Qi Muchao who was standing at the door. She didn't know when this man came, nor did she know how much of her words he had heard.

Hesitantly, he was about to speak when Qi Muchao spoke first, "You actually left me alone in the front hall to accompany that old man."

The resentful tone made Lu Wanning breathe a sigh of relief. Although she didn't know if this man had heard what she had just said, it was obvious that he was giving her a chance to get out of the situation. Naturally, she couldn't go against Qi Muchao's kindness and hurriedly explained, "I haven't seen my aunt for a few days, so naturally I have a lot to talk about. It wouldn't be a good idea for you to follow me."

Qi Muchao didn't say anything, and Master Chen and Chen Wenjian also rushed over from behind.

"The prince left too quickly." Master Chen wiped his sweat. "We've prepared a wing room in the mansion. Wan Ning, why don't you take the prince to rest for a while? I'll have someone call you when lunch is ready."

Lu Wanning looked at Qi Muchao, "Are you tired?"

Qi Muzhao shook his head, his eyes dim, "Not bad."

"Then I'll take my husband for a walk in the garden."

Mr. Chen breathed a sigh of relief. "Okay, okay, I'll go to the kitchen to see how the lunch preparations are going."

Hearing this, Lu Wanning uttered an "ah" and suddenly asked, "Why didn't I see Madam today?"

This sentence made Mr. Chen breathless. The second and third wives looked at each other meaningfully.

Chen Wenjian pursed his lips and answered for him. His eyes fell on Lu Wanning's face with obvious scrutiny. "Mother is ill and is still recuperating. I hope the Crown Prince and the Crown Princess will forgive me."

"No problem."

Qi Muchao took a step forward to block Chen Wenjian's sight of Lu Wanning and said to her, "Let's go."
