Chapter 79 Compassion and Broken Promise (2/2)

The call was answered almost instantly.

"Chengyu?"

Madam Gu's voice came through, carrying her usual elegance, but upon closer listening, there was also urgency:

"Did you see the message? Has the time been set?"

"mom."

Gu Chengyu spoke, his voice decisive: "The meeting is temporarily canceled."

"What?"

Mrs. Gu on the other end of the phone was clearly not expected to hear this answer; her voice instantly rose, revealing surprise and dissatisfaction.

"Gu Chengyu! You just agreed to that yesterday!"

"What do you mean by 'temporarily canceled'? There's a limit to how much you can go back on your word!"

"I did not go back on my word."

Gu Chengyu said calmly, "I'm just saying it's not the right time."

"What's inappropriate?"

Madam Gu's tone became stern: "I have already communicated with the Shen family and the Song family. Their daughter's time is also precious."

"How am I supposed to explain this to them?"

“Chengyu, this is not a game. This marriage is about whether you can take over real power from your father as soon as possible.”

"And those dozen or so illegitimate children outside are eyeing us covetously..."

"mom."

Gu Chengyu impatiently interrupted her, a hint of mockery flashing in his eyes:

"Have you forgotten that the Gu family has never relied on marriage alliances to choose an heir, but rather on raising treacherous snakes?"

He got up and walked to the huge floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the bustling city below:

“From the time I was thirteen, I crushed those illegitimate younger brothers and sisters you mentioned as threats one by one at the starting line, so that they could only rely on me for their lives and live off the charity of the Gu family. At that time, the position of heir was already mine, and there was no doubt about it.”

"Doesn't Father know this well too?"

He paused, his voice growing colder yet exuding confidence: "As for now? I have a say in the core business and decision-making power of the Gu Group."

“I, Gu Chengyu, am no longer just a prince in name only.”

"As for a marriage alliance?"

He scoffed lightly: "It's just following the old Gu family rules, going through the motions, and giving those old fogies in the clan some face."

"When to leave and how to leave are up to me."

"Mom, ability is what determines everything, so you don't need to worry too much."

There was a long silence on the other end of the phone, with only Mrs. Gu's slightly rapid breathing audible.

Clearly, her son's merciless words shocked her and left her speechless.

After a long while, Madam Gu finally found her voice, which was filled with exhaustion: "Chengyu, you are too arrogant. What if..."

"mom."

Gu Chengyu interrupted again: "Unless something goes wrong, this matter ends here."

"I've been very busy lately and don't have time to deal with those rich heiresses."

"Please keep the candidate for now and let me know."

After saying that, he hung up the phone decisively without waiting for Madam Gu to speak again.

Gu Chengyu rubbed his temples, then turned his head and looked at the closed master bedroom door, thinking of the little girl inside who was sleeping soundly, completely unaware that she had disturbed his plans.

The coldness in his eyes unconsciously softened, replaced by a look of helpless indulgence.

Tsk.

Little troublemaker.

He cursed under his breath, but a slight smile played on his lips.

Fine, let her have him all to herself for a while longer.

Anyway, the person is already his, there's no way he can escape.

As for the rest...

Gu Chengyu never failed to get what he wanted.

It's just a matter of time.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Gu sat blankly on the sofa in the Gu family's living room, her phone screen still lit up, showing Mrs. Shen and Mrs. Song's enthusiastic and expectant replies after learning about the blind date arrangement.

Madam Gu gritted her teeth, "You little brat!"

How is she going to explain this to people, and how disappointed will the two young ladies be?

Everyone's adoring him... This chapter is now complete (please click to continue reading the next chapter!).
