Chapter 3 A Woman Who Is Two-Faced
Qin Ce said calmly, "That woman surnamed Wu was also arranged by you. Why didn't you tell her? If you had, you would have had a granddaughter-in-law."
The old man choked for a moment. Miss Wu was the granddaughter of his former chess friend. His chess friend said how wonderful his granddaughter was, and he took this opportunity to invite her over to see her. However, as soon as the girl entered the door, she started picking and choosing, and he really couldn't bring himself to like her.
Therefore, Qin Ce did not stop him when he introduced himself as being penniless.
The old man insisted on adding, "These stars are different."
Qin Ce countered, "How is it different?"
"What am I supposed to say? Anyway, she's a good girl. You should cherish her. Your company has moved back to China, so you shouldn't be going abroad anymore, right? Get married soon, or I'll die with regrets."
Qin Ce frowned slightly, his expression darkening. "What are you saying!"
Although the voice wasn't loud, the unintentional aura it exuded made the old man hesitate for a moment. However, this also showed that his words had an effect, and the old man instantly became arrogant again.
"Hmph, I'm eighty years old this year, how many more years can I live? Anyway, you can do whatever you want. If you want to acknowledge me as your grandfather, then marry Xingxing. If it weren't for her all these years, I might have died in the house and no one would have known."
Upon hearing this, Qin Ce fell silent, his gaze fixed on a certain spot, lost in thought.
He had overheard the conversation between the woman and his grandfather. She had broken up with her boyfriend because of the disagreement over the bride price, and now she was trying to sow discord between the two of them. He didn't think the woman was anything special, but he was willing to meet her and see how capable she really was.
Meanwhile, Qiao Xing returned home and collapsed onto the sofa.
Her mind was filled with the events of the day. Frustrated, she turned over and curled up in the corner of the sofa.
She was just about to take a nap and forget what had happened that day when her phone suddenly rang.
Qiao Xing picked it up and saw that it was a message from Qin Ce.
She hadn't had time to change the nickname yet; Qin Ce's WeChat name was just a capital Q, and his profile picture was a doodle.
Opening WeChat, Qin Ce said: "Let's meet somewhere at 8 pm."
Qiao Xing was slightly taken aback. Was he serious?
She typed in the chat window, then deleted it, repeatedly deleting and rewriting, until finally replying with just a simple "okay".
It's better to talk things out in person.
Just as Qiao Xing finished replying, another call came in, this time saved as "Uncle".
Upon seeing this note, Qiao Xing frowned. She hesitated for a moment, but still answered the phone.
"Hey, Uncle."
"Xingxing, how's your house search going? Your cousin is coming back to get married next month. It's not that your uncle doesn't want you to stay, it's just that we have to sell this house and buy a new one in the city center, so..."
Qiao Xing paused for a moment, then said, "I understand. I'm already looking at houses, and I'll move out in a few days."
"I'm so sorry."
"It's alright, this was originally your house too." Qiao Xing paused, "Uncle, may I ask how much this house sold for?"
"Hey, the old house isn't worth much. They'll only offer 500,000 at most."
Five hundred thousand…
Upon hearing this number, Qiao Xing's heart stirred slightly.
Qiao Xing has lived here since she was very young. Her parents divorced when she was a child, and neither of them wanted to take care of her. Her grandmother raised her single-handedly.
This house holds more than twenty years of her memories.
Before her grandmother passed away, she told her not to let her uncle sell the house.
But this house isn't hers, so she has no say in it. If she had money, she could buy it.
For some reason, Qiao Xing suddenly thought of Grandpa Qin's words, but only for a second before she suppressed the thought.
Soon, at eight o'clock in the evening, Qin Ce knocked on the door right on time.
Qiao Xing didn't want to go outside, so she invited him to her home, since it was close by.
Upon hearing the knock, Qiao Xing immediately went to open the door.
Standing outside, Qin Ce was incredibly tall; Qiao Xing had to look up to meet his gaze.
He changed into a white shirt, and his overall appearance was not as cold as it had been during the day.
Actually, Qiao Xing had been trying to recall Qin Ce, but it had been too long, and she was still young, so she couldn't remember many things.
In her memory, there was only one quiet boy. Every time she went to Grandpa Qin's house, he would lock himself in his room. If you were to say they had ever played together, the most they had ever done was eat together. It seems like there was nothing else.
"Is it convenient for me to come in?" Qin Ce interrupted her thoughts.
Qiao Xing snapped out of his daze and hurriedly let him in, saying, "Come in, you don't need to change your shoes."
After she finished speaking, she turned around and went to pour him some water.
Qin Ce went inside and looked around. There were no men's slippers in the shoe cabinet, and the room was very tidy.
The two sat down on the sofa, and the atmosphere became a little awkward.
Qiao Xing couldn't help but speak first, "Um, what do you mainly want to talk about?"
Qin Ce leaned back on the sofa, crossed his legs, and adopted a boss-like posture, giving Qiao Xing the illusion that he was going to negotiate with him.
He got straight to the point: "My grandfather likes you very much. Let me introduce myself first. My name is Qin Ce. I am 30 years old. I don't own a house, only a car. I plan to develop my career in China for the time being. I haven't found a job yet. My parents are divorced. I have been living abroad with my mother for the past few years. She got married abroad and probably won't be returning to China anytime soon."
"I also have a younger brother who lives with my father, but not in Chongqing. I came back mainly because of my grandfather. I will stay in Chongqing for at least ten years. Is there anything else you need to know?"
After listening to him, Qiao Xing hesitated for a moment before saying, "So what do you think? If it's because of Grandpa Qin, then it's really unnecessary..."
Qin Ce shook his head: "Not entirely. Marriage is not a necessity for me. It doesn't matter who I marry. The main thing is to make the elders happy. Grandpa is right. You don't need to consider my opinion. It's mainly up to you."
Qiao Xing was in a dilemma for a moment.
Qin Ce added, "You don't need to rush. You can take your time to consider it. It doesn't matter whether you refuse or agree."
Qiao Xing thought for a moment, then tentatively asked, "So, do you have any savings?"
He raised an eyebrow slightly: "Deposits?"
"right."
"It's not much, but it should be enough. Don't worry about that, you won't go hungry."
Hearing him say that, Qiao Xing's face flushed slightly. She took a deep breath and said:
"Let me introduce myself. My name is Qiao Xing, I am 26 years old. I haven't been in contact with my parents for more than ten years. I live alone and have no siblings."
"I currently work in administration at Weisheng Technology Company, and my salary averages around 8,000. And... I had a relationship before that lasted for two years, but that's all."
"Weisheng Technology?" Qin Ce repeated softly, nodding slightly. "What are your requirements?"
Qiao Xing pursed her lips and gritted her teeth, saying, "I want a dowry of 300,000 yuan. You have to pay for it yourself; Grandpa Qin can't pay for it. If you agree, then we'll get married."
