Chapter 23 I gave him the key on my birthday

The past seems like it was just yesterday. Uncle was also heavy-hearted when he spoke of this, and he sighed repeatedly.

"And then?" Upon hearing these words, Wan'er's mind quickly conjured up the image of her mother's disheveled appearance at that time. Wan'er felt very sorry for her and had a vague feeling that her mother must have encountered something unusual that night.

"What happened next was even stranger. When your aunt knew your mother had arrived, she also got up. When she saw your mother like this, she felt sorry for her and quickly brought a towel to help wipe the water droplets off her body."

I was just about to ask what had happened when, to my surprise, Yueya, who had always been very respectful to your aunt, suddenly changed her expression. I don't know where she got the strength, but she pushed your aunt away, then quickly turned around, opened the door, and ran into the rain...

"What? Why is my mom like this? What is she doing?" Wan'er gripped her pants tightly at the knees with both hands, her arms tightening their grip.

"Yes! What was Crescent Moon going to do? And why did she do that? I couldn't figure it out either. We were really startled at the time. I shouted her name loudly outside the door, calling her to come back, but there was thunder and lightning outside, and her figure quickly disappeared into the rain."

I quickly grabbed my flashlight and umbrella and ran out the door, but in the dark of night, I was covered in mud and water, and I still couldn't catch up with Yueya. That night, feeling that something was wrong, we couldn't sleep. We tried calling her but couldn't get through, and our hearts were pounding with anxiety. Your aunt and I prayed anxiously, "Let it be dawn soon! When it's light, we can go find your mother, but..."

"But the next day, my parents had an accident." Slowly raising her arms, Wan'er buried her face in her hands, tears quickly dripping from between her fingers. Her shoulders trembled. "Perhaps I should have sensed it long ago. My mother, so young, suddenly instructed me on my birthday that if she and my father were to meet with misfortune one day, I must send them back to their hometown for burial..."

At this point, Wan'er lowered her head and sobbed, and the air seemed to freeze at that moment.

“Child, now that the three-year term is up, it’s time for me to hand the box over to you.” Third Uncle stood up and patted Wan’er on the back.

“My mother…” Wan’er choked up as she slowly raised her head.

"Wait a minute, I'll get the box for you," Uncle San sighed and turned around, walking towards the TV cabinet in the living room. He stood at the corner of the TV cabinet, slowly squatted down, reached out to open the cabinet door, and then reached inside. A moment later, he had a small, dark red wooden box in his hand.

As her uncle approached, Wan'er reached out and took the wooden box.

The wooden box is rectangular, but it feels slightly uneven to the touch.

"What's inside? Where's the key?" Wan'er asked, seeing that there was no key inside.

“I don’t know what it is either. I don’t have the key,” Uncle San sighed and took a few steps back. “Your mother said that she gave you the key on her birthday.”

"Give it to me? For my birthday?" Wan'er took the box with both hands, tears streaming down her cheeks. She frowned and tried hard to remember, but she still couldn't recall. "But she never gave me any key."

"Then I don't know. She said those words to me in a dream. She said she didn't have time to explain at the time, so I don't know either. Can dreams be believed?" Uncle shrugged, indicating that he couldn't help Wan'er anymore.

"Mom! What do you want to tell me?" Wan'er lowered her eyes, staring blankly at the box...
