"Wan'er, my child!"
Wan'er heard her mother's call. The flames around her had disappeared. She tried to move her body and looked down at herself, only to find that she had no burn marks from the flames.
Her body had changed; from her chest down, it was covered in shimmering red scales.
A large, bright red tail gracefully slapped against the sand beneath it with a "smack, smack, smack!"
At this moment, Wan'er, with her long hair flowing over her shoulders, was stunningly beautiful.
"Mom, Mom, where are you?" Wan'er looked up and searched anxiously for her mother's whereabouts.
"Child, I'm here," her mother's voice came from her right. Wan'er blinked and turned her head. A faint orange light appeared to her right, and behind the orange light was an endless sea of clouds.
Once Wan'er's eyes adjusted to the orange light, she could vaguely see a graceful figure within it. Although she couldn't see it clearly, Wan'er knew at a glance that it was her mother, and in her mother's arms, the upper body of someone was leaning against her...
"Mom, Dad!" Wan'er called out to her parents with the deepest affection, tears already welling up in her eyes and streaming down her cheeks, "tinkling..." like jewels rolling onto the sand and disappearing into it...
"My child, you are our pride. Your father and I want to thank you for bringing us back to the light of day and for letting us see you again," the mother said softly, her voice filled with joy, and glistening tears rolled down her cheeks...
"How is Daddy?" Unable to walk and unable to hear her father's voice, Wan'er was worried. So she rolled over, used her elbows to support herself, and crawled forward step by step...
As they drew closer, Wan'er saw that her mother was embracing her father, and the two of them were sitting in the deep sand, their legs submerged up to their knees. No wonder they couldn't move.
"Mom, what happened to Dad? What happened to you? How can I save you?" Wan'er reached out her hand as they were so close.
"No!" the mother cried out, but it was too late.
Wan'er pointed her finger downwards and dug hard into the sand, but she soon felt a sharp pain. The sand seemed to have solidified into cement, and her finger couldn't penetrate it at all. Wan'er saw that the skin on her middle finger was broken, and a trickle of blood was flowing down...
“Silly child, if we could get out, we would have done it long ago,” Crescent Moon stretched out a hand, looked at Wan’er, and shook her head with heartache. “Do you know that this sand pit is formed from our flesh and blood? If you destroy it, we will be destroyed.”
"Why? Why is it so cruel..." Wan'er's eyes reddened as she shook her head, extending her hand to her mother as well. Their fingertips touched, both feeling cold. "Why isn't Father saying anything?"
“Child, your father is a mortal. How could he endure such cruel torture? He insisted on staying with me, and no amount of persuasion could change his mind. It's all my fault. I can only use my spiritual power to maintain his last bit of life, waiting for this moment so we can leave together.” Crescent Moon paused here, bit her lip, and clearly uttered two words: “The mortal world!”
Upon hearing the last two words, Wan'er was startled. "What did you say? I went through all this trouble, and you're still leaving?"
“Child, you should understand the meaning of survival. If you are trapped here and can never leave, do you really think that's a good thing?”
"Mom, I understand!" Wan'er nodded, tears rolling down her cheeks again, and she let go of her mother's hand.
“Children, your mother and father will bless you,” Crescent Moon waved her hand, and their bodies began to become transparent…
