It rained last night, so the road was a bit slippery, but thankfully, it was safe to walk on the grass.
The valley was dark and quiet in the early morning, with a chilly autumn breeze. Occasionally, the chirping of birds could be heard from the dense forest, which sounded strangely mournful to Su Mei.
"I told you not to come along, but you insisted on coming to give me courage," Wan'er shook her head when she saw Su Mei looking around, shrinking back and shaking her leg.
Knowing that Su Mei was timid, Wan'er was grateful to her. Su Mei had gone to great lengths for this deep friendship.
"Wan'er, stop teasing me. Yes! I can't muster the courage. I'm just an accountant, how can I compare to you, an excellent head nurse, who can even sleep with a dead person's head in your arms!" Su Mei retorted, pouting.
"Alright, I should thank you." Wan'er breathed a sigh of relief. She was naturally bold and had nothing to be afraid of. But with Su Mei around, it was much more lively.
"Tch!" To bolster her courage, Su Mei hummed a pop song softly, but after a short while, she stopped and listened intently to her surroundings.
Who said singing can boost courage? That's utterly ridiculous. Why do I feel more and more anxious the more I sing? Faced with the silence for miles around, imagining the unknown conditions in the jungle, Su Mei's voice completely went hoarse.
"Don't be afraid, I'm here. No matter what, I'll protect you." Wan'er stretched out her free hand and squeezed Su Mei's cold fingers. The two of them supported each other as they walked towards a path overgrown with tall weeds on the left hillside...
Wan'er stopped speaking, and Su Mei had long since ceased singing; they proceeded cautiously forward.
Without realizing it, the two quickened their pace, and about ten minutes later...
"Wan'er," Su Mei said breathlessly, as they were almost halfway up the mountain. She reached out and tugged at the hem of Wan'er's dress, instinctively lowering her voice, "Are we there yet?"
"We're almost there, just ahead." Wan'er didn't turn around, but her breathing became heavier.
In front of a relatively flat hillside, there was a lush, large tree, and behind it was the grave of my parents.
Sighting at herself, Wan'er took the last two steps and arrived at the big tree first.
"Ah!" Wan'er, who had just regained her balance, suddenly screamed, and the chrysanthemum in her hand fell to the ground with a "plop!"
"What's wrong?" Wan'er was always calm and collected, so why was she so flustered? Su Mei, who was still a few steps away, was startled by Wan'er.
She quickly flicked a strand of curly hair that had fallen across her forehead and covered her right eye, then strode up a few steps, reached out and pulled Wan'er's arm, standing beside her.
"Wow!" The scene before her eyes made Su Mei's round face freeze instantly.
At this moment, Wan'er could no longer control herself and knelt down on the damp mud with a "plop!"
Su Mei instinctively clasped her hands together in front of her chest and bowed repeatedly towards the gravesite, saying, "Forgive me, forgive me..."
The scene before my eyes was truly astonishing! In the very center of the flat land, where the bodies were originally buried together and the high mounds of the graves should have been exposed, something had somehow smashed a large pit more than ten square meters wide into the ground. Soil was scattered all around, creating a mess. The pit was filled with muddy water, but no bones could be seen exposed...
"Dad, Mom!" Wan'er slumped down on her own calves.
"How...how could this have happened? Who...who is so wicked?" Su Mei's legs trembled with fear, and she could barely speak. She subconsciously looked down at her red clothes and silently prayed that she hadn't been possessed by an evil spirit...
