Chapter 99. Her hesitation, she…

The phone call between He Yan and Zhou Zhan was very short, and both of them sounded very serious.

After he hung up the phone, Wen Xue asked worriedly, "Are you alright?"

In fact, He Yan didn't want her to get involved. He hoped that she would be as happy as her friends, with her biggest worries coming from work and a carefree life.

"He'll look into it." Seeing her frown, He Yan put down his phone, ruffled her hair, and whispered reassuringly, "Don't worry."

"Um."

Wen Xue glanced at her watch. "If we don't go back soon, Si Yi will call and urge me."

He Yan remained noncommittal.

When she lived in the school dormitory, there were access restrictions and a cleaning lady. Now that she has moved out, she lives with Yang Siyi.

"Hey," she urged him with a smile.

Pretending to be dead wouldn't work, so He Yan had no choice but to turn off the engine, get out of the car, and escort her upstairs. The two of them walked very slowly along this stretch of road, enjoying the last moments of the night. When they came out of the elevator, they arrived at their doorstep.

Wen Xue couldn't break free from his grip; it was like being held in pliers.

After being with He Yan, she saw a more authentic side of him—childish and clingy.

"I just got back from a business trip. I should be able to leave work early tomorrow." He raised his hand to smooth her hair, his fingertips pausing when they touched the sweat on her forehead. It was indeed very hot today; the hallway was like a steamer. Thinking of this, he stopped holding her back. "Come inside quickly."

He started urging her to go inside quickly.

He was completely different, as if the person who had been holding her hand and refusing to let go just seconds before wasn't him at all.

Wen Xue was both amused and exasperated.

She took out her key and opened the door. "I really went in."

Before he could turn the key into the lock, he pulled her close, lowered his head, and kissed her. After a few seconds, he quickly pulled away and calmly said, "Go in."

Wen Xue glanced at him, a smile playing on her lips.

She missed him too, and under his unexpected gaze, she stood on tiptoe and kissed him, saying, "See you tomorrow."

Don't laugh at someone who's only a fraction of what's happening. She's also very clingy in relationships, but she hides it; she acts like she doesn't miss him much, but he's all she sees.

He Yan watched her enter and close the door. The soundproofing in this apartment was poor, and he could hear her laughing and joking with Yang Siyi. He stood at the door for a while, then went downstairs and left. Before getting into his car, he couldn't help but look up at her room window.

He took out his phone and dialed Wu Yuejiang's number.

The call connected quickly on the other end. "What is it?"

"I want to buy a house."

These words stunned Wu Yuejiang into silence for a few seconds. He asked incredulously, "Don't tell me your sister accepted your proposal?"

They dated for less than a month, then fast-forwarded to a proposal and then got married.

The elderly cannot keep up with this pace.

He Yan: "..."

The words "marriage proposal" sent a shiver down his spine in the dead of night.

"What nonsense are you talking about?" He quickly came to his senses.

"You started talking nonsense!" Wu Yuejiang felt his heart stop in fright.

Calling late at night to say you want to buy a house, how can you not think things through?

He Yan swore he hadn't thought about it that way. As for why he suddenly had this impulse, it was probably because he had been wandering for too long, so long that he longed to have a home.

In the blink of an eye, Wen Xue's last summer vacation as a student came to an end. Her senior year started, and her class schedule was packed for a month. A month later, these soon-to-be graduates would officially begin their internships. On this day of returning to school, they gathered in dormitory 503.

The morning passed by in such a busy manner, and the four of them went to the cafeteria for lunch hand in hand.

Ye Manni noticed that Wen Xue seemed a little absent-minded today, assuming she was troubled by her internship, so she pulled Chen Bingwen aside and quietly asked, "Wen Xue, is something wrong?"

Chen Bingwen looked blank. "I haven't heard of that."

The three of them looked at Wen Xue on the balcony.

Wen Xue was wiping the dust off the clothes hanger when she suddenly glanced over. When her eyes met those of the three women, she clearly looked away.

Her roommates felt a chill run down their spines when they saw her hesitant expression.

Oh no, something terrible has happened!

Having known her for so long, don't they know Wen Xue's personality well? She's always been gentle and kind, and she's always done things in an orderly manner. She must have encountered something, something big, right now.

"you……"

Wen Xue washed the rag and hung it to dry to the side. She walked in hesitantly, opened her mouth to say two words but then stopped, looking troubled. She wanted to say something but didn't dare to.

Not many people knew that she was with He Yan. Since she had taken this step, she had no intention of running away or hiding it. However, she found it difficult to talk to her friends who knew about the relationship between He Yan and He Heng.

During the most agonizing period, she couldn't help but think that it would be better if He Yan wasn't He Heng's biological brother, but just a stranger.

But then she thought, if He Yan wasn't He Heng's brother, would she accept the kindness of a stranger during her most painful time?

Their relationship, their feelings, are a vicious cycle.

Her hesitation and blushing at this moment were also part of the price she had to pay.

Ye Manni felt that Wen Xue's expression was very familiar, just like when she asked them for money before. She immediately replied, "I haven't finished spending my New Year's money. How much do you need? If it's not enough, I'll ask my parents!"

Chen Bingwen chimed in, "Yes, yes, I still have a few days until I get paid."

Lu Chang thought for a moment, "I don't have any money, but my boyfriend does, so I can go and scam him... um, ask him for it."

Wen Xue was stunned; all her hesitation seemed to have vanished at that moment.

“No.” She shook her head. “I don’t need the money. I just wanted to ask if you’re free tonight? He’d like to invite you to dinner.”

The dormitory fell silent for a moment.

he?

he? ?

Having lived together for so long, they wouldn't ask who it was at this crucial moment. They both knew perfectly well that the "he" Wen Xue was talking about had only been the two of them since freshman year. Was such a relationship shocking? Of course not. Even if it were, no one could interfere. Anyone who had witnessed Wen Xue's pain at losing He Heng would not blame her in the slightest.

Wen Xue's heart was pounding.

"What do you want to eat?" they asked in unison.

Wen Xue chuckled and said softly, "You can eat whatever you want."

In the evening, He Yan and Wen Xue treated their three roommates to dinner near the school. The atmosphere was relaxed and pleasant. He Yan was just a tool throughout the meal. He paid the bill, peeled crayfish for Wen Xue, and poured water for all four of them. He didn't say much. Putting aside the complicated relationship, he was indeed a qualified boyfriend.

The dormitory group chat was flooded with messages.

Ye Manni: [After close observation by the organization, I agree to this marriage!]

Chen Bingwen: [Since you agree, then I agree too.]

Lu Chang: [I follow the crowd]

Wen Xue glanced down at the message and couldn't help but chuckle.

Under the table, she quietly tugged at He Yan's hand, and their hands clasped together.

After dinner, they discreetly slipped away, leaving the two of them alone. Wen Xue took He Yan's arm for a leisurely stroll, and remembering the phone call from a few days ago, she tilted her head and asked, "What happened at Jin Yuan? Have you figured it out?"

He Yan felt helpless.

Those who study mathematics do indeed have excellent memories.

He thought she had forgotten about it. Her brain is like that; she doesn't remember things she should remember, but she remembers a lot of things she shouldn't.

“Yes.” He nodded. “The owner of Jinyuan is Zhou Zhan’s friend. Zhou Xian offered such good terms that he would occasionally help out. On that day in November, it was probably him who leaked Zhou Zhan’s itinerary.”

Wen Xue was stunned, but she quickly realized a serious problem, "Then you—"

Seeing that her face was pale, He Yan stopped, hugged her, and whispered in her ear, "Don't worry, he doesn't know that I saved Zhou Zhan, and he's never seen me before."

Human nature is complex. He was reborn from the future, and the information he found in his previous life showed that the person was also dealing with Zhou Xian. Therefore, he never suspected the people around Zhou Zhan.

Looking back now, that person may have been motivated by self-interest, but they certainly didn't want Zhou Zhan to die at Zhou Xian's hands.

Wen Xue felt relieved and looked up at him, "So, does this count as me helping you?"

He Yan was about to nod and praise her when he realized the meaning behind her words. He immediately let go of her and said with a serious expression, "Don't even think about it. It's impossible. I won't agree."

Wen Xue sighed.

Yuejiang is right. He does have double standards. He's willing to risk his life, but he won't accept that she faces even the slightest risk.

"Wenxue, be good."

At this moment, He Yan is not the obedient boyfriend, but a serious older brother.

He not only has double standards, he also has a double identity.

Wen Xue pushed him away, "I know, big brother."

After saying that, she walked forward very quickly.

He Yan stood frozen in place.

Sensing her teasing tone, he quickly caught up. "What did you just call me?"

Wen Xue didn't turn her head, but raised her chin and said, "I didn't shout."

He Yan was both angry and amused. He wrapped his long arm around her waist and lifted her up. Her feet left the ground, and she screamed in fright, but he didn't let go.

On the black sedan not far away.

Zhou Xian's indifferent gaze pierced through the bulletproof glass, watching the laughing and joking young couple. He looked away and followed them.

It's an eyesore.

There was a paper bag on the back seat of the car, printed with the logo of a dessert brand. The packaging was fairly secure, but a faint sweet aroma still wafted out.

Ding-a-ling—

The phone ringing broke the deathly silence in the car, and the driver, who wished he could turn into a mushroom, breathed a sigh of relief. For a moment, he was genuinely worried that Xiao Zhou would make him drive straight into it.

Zhou Xian looked away and glanced at the screen.

He had a bad feeling, and sure enough, when the call connected, there was a lot of noise coming from the other end, mixed with Aunt Zhang's cries.

late at night.

For the first time in his life, Zhou Xianping listened to his grandfather's advice and did not send him to the hospital to await death. Instead, he allowed the over-eighty-year-old man to spend the last moments of his life at home with his deceased wife. Family doctors came one after another, all with solemn expressions and saying the same thing.

Old Cheng has reached the limit of his life.

Zhou Xian stood silently in the courtyard. The night sky was pitch black. He thought of many things, including the only happy time he had as a child, when he would vacation here. He would lie on a bamboo bed, his grandfather would teach him to recognize the stars, and his grandmother would fan him.

I also remembered a few nights ago when my grandfather, who was still awake, came to knock on my door, his steps trembling.

As he reminisced about the past, the old man seemed to know his time was coming to an end, and he was still teaching him, just like when he was a child, that sincerity could move mountains, and that he should be sincere to the girl he liked.

He was amused but didn't say anything, just that he found it funny.

"Zhou Xian".

Cheng Jun's eyes were swollen from crying. She came out of the house, her whole being exuding an aura of suppressed grief. Her steps were unsteady. As soon as she saw her son, tears fell again. She covered her mouth and choked out, "Your grandfather has woken up and is looking for you."

Zhou Xian's expression went blank for a few seconds.

He hummed in response and calmly walked inside, through the living room and down the corridor. Before he even reached the door, he could smell an indescribable aroma. Hearing footsteps, Old Cheng turned his neck and looked towards the door.

Zhou Xian came in and realized that his grandfather had something to say to him.

He resisted going over there, but he had already walked to the bedside and squatted down.

"Did you send it?" Old Cheng asked with a peaceful look in his eyes.

Everyone else retreated outside the room, and no one could understand what the grandmother and grandson were talking about.

Zhou Xian smiled and said, "I gave it to her. She said it was very sweet."
