Chapter 51. [First Update] You mustn't bully her anymore. ...

In the afternoon, Wen Xue received a message from He Yan, saying that he was busy and asked her to have dinner with Nana.

This happens quite often.

He Yan is usually very busy, she knows. Lately, he's been making the most of his time by taking her out for dinner two or three times a week. She replied "okay," and then happily went to the kitchen to check if the mung bean soup was ready.

The stew pot was boiling, and the mung beans had all split open, releasing a fragrant aroma.

She planned to put it in the refrigerator after it cooled down; it would be nice and refreshing, which Wu Yuejiang liked, and He Yan liked too.

Wannian hadn't returned from his long-distance trip, and Nana was also alone. Wenxue went with her to the night market. They didn't have a proper dinner, but they ate a lot of snacks. When they came back, it was already dark. It was a hot day, but they didn't seem to mind the heat. They held hands and chatted about other people's gossip, laughing all the while.

The two ran into Wang Yuan downstairs.

Wang Yuan held a piece of crushed ice in his hand, easily broke it in two, and almost without thinking, gave the other piece to Wen Xue.

Nana rolled her eyes so hard they almost reached the sky. She stepped forward and snatched the item from his hand without hesitation. "Are you blind, or am I a ghost you can't see?"

Wang Yuan chuckled.

Wen Xue didn't like this either, and politely waved her hand in refusal. She glanced habitually at the room on the second floor and asked, "Hasn't he returned yet?"

Wang Yuan followed her gaze and asked, "You mean Brother Yan?"

He smiled, his face tanned a wheat color from the summer sun, but the advantage was that no one could tell he was shy. "He was still working overtime at the company when I left."

Even he knew how hard He Yan had worked over the past six months.

When is He Yan relatively free? When Wen Xue is on winter or summer vacation, whenever she goes back to school, he is constantly on business trips, and working overtime and socializing until late at night is commonplace.

"Has he eaten?" Wen Xue asked again.

"I don't know, probably not..." Wang Yuan shook his head, "Anyway, he didn't ask me to buy food."

Wen Xue smiled thoughtfully at him, then was pulled into the stairwell by Nana. As planned, the two returned to Wen Xue's room, turned on the air conditioner and laptop, and happily snuggled on the sofa to spend the evening watching a comedy.

About ten minutes into the movie, Wen Xue was still out of it. She looked at Nana and hesitated, saying, "I'm going out to make a phone call."

"Uh-huh."

Wen Xue picked up her phone, pushed open the door, and went out into the dimly lit corridor. She sent He Yan a message: [Are you still at the company?]

She leaned against the railing, head bowed, waiting for a reply.

A few minutes later, my phone vibrated, and a message popped up on the screen: "Hmm, have you had dinner yet?"

She replied: "I've eaten, what about you?"

He Yan: [After I finish my work, I'll go get a late-night snack.]

Wen Xue sighed. This meant he hadn't eaten dinner yet. It was already eight o'clock, and based on her understanding of him, if things could be finished within an hour, he would definitely say "right away." This person was really strange. He was usually very strict with her, supervising her to take her medicine, eat, and sleep, but when it came to himself, he would do whatever it took to be perfunctory.

In Nana's words, it's a double standard.

Without consulting him, she simply informed him: "I'll bring you food."

After sending the message, she didn't want to see his reply and went straight back to her room. Nana was hugging a pillow and laughing loudly, calling to her, "Come here, come here, let's rewind to where you were before, let me tell you, it's so funny!"

"Nana, I have to go out for a bit." Wen Xue opened the refrigerator and carefully took out a glass lunchbox containing mung bean soup. "I'll be back in a bit."

Where are we going?

"Delivering meals."

Nana replied, "Then hurry up!"

Wen Xue packed her lunchbox, grabbed her phone and wallet, and headed out to a small restaurant across the street to get a meat and a vegetable dish. Under the moonlight, she walked towards her company. The park was quiet after nightfall, with trucks lying in wait. She arrived at her company building with practiced ease.

It was pitch black all around, except for the lights on in the windows of the second-floor office.

She groped her way through the office area in the dark and stepped onto the stairs. Before she could even reach the top, the door was pushed open from the inside, and bright lights and cold air poured out, illuminating the path beneath her feet and blowing on her dry skin.

He Yan stood against the light, so his expression was obscured, but his tone revealed his helplessness. "Didn't I reply to your message saying you didn't need to come?"

Wen Xue looked at him innocently: "I was too busy and didn't have time to check my phone."

"..."

There were only the two of them in the entire company. Wen Xue followed him into the office. He was indeed very busy; his desk was messy and piled with documents. "Why don't you eat first? It won't take more than a few minutes."

It would have been better if she hadn't come; now that she's here, He Yan feels both tired and hungry.

He tilted his head back, turned his neck, stretched out his long legs, and sat down on the sofa table in the reception area.

The aroma of the food instantly filled the room.

"Well then, I'll be going now," Wen Xue reminded him. "Remember to drink the mung bean soup, but also remember to take your lunchbox home."

"Wait a minute." He Yan swallowed the food in his mouth and called out to her, "It's too late, and it's dark on the road. Let me finish eating and we'll walk together."

Wen Xue thought to herself, "Do you know it's very late now?"

She looked around and sat down opposite him.

He eats quickly, but he doesn't give the impression of wolfing down his food.

"Are you going to tutoring tomorrow afternoon?" He Yan asked casually when he noticed her looking at her phone out of the corner of his eye.

"Um."

“It’s quite tiring,” he said in a flat tone. “It takes three or four hours just to get around. Aren’t you tired of the hassle? If you really can’t stay idle, you might as well find an easy part-time job nearby.”

Wen Xue couldn't help but chuckle.

It's interesting that even a student who hasn't graduated yet knows that there are almost no jobs in society that pay well, have little work, and are close to home.

Even if there were, it would definitely not be her turn.

“It’s no trouble at all.” She held out her right hand, showing off her bracelet to him. “As long as the hourly wage is high, I don’t feel like it’s a hassle. And look!”

He Yan looked up and his gaze settled on her wrist, which was so thin that he could break it with one hand.

Besides the women's watch, there was also a crystal bracelet that was neither pink nor white.

He knew that the watch was a nineteenth birthday gift from He Heng.

"What?" he asked.

Wen Xue fiddled with the bracelet with her fingers, making a crisp sound. She said with a hint of pride, "Weiwei bought it for me while shopping with her classmates. It's a gift from her. Isn't it pretty?"

He Yan chuckled: "Does this cost ten yuan?"

Wen Xue suppressed her smile, "The sentiment behind a gift cannot be measured in money."

Seeing her so happy, He Yan suppressed the urge to have her resign. Reason told him that things had come to this point, and her continuing to tutor wouldn't make any difference.

Since she likes it, let her be.

Moreover, no one knows better than him what Lin Baizhou sacrificed for her in his past life. To be fair, without that madman Zhou Xian interfering, she would have been very happy.

If she still chooses to be with Lin Baizhou in this lifetime, then there is nothing wrong with that.

Wen Xue saw He Yan eating in silence with his head down again. Perhaps it was because the gift was mentioned, but the perfume box once again inconveniently entered her mind. She pursed her lips, looking at him thoughtfully and with a heavy heart.

Her scrutinizing and probing gaze was so intense that it was completely undisguised.

Anyone with eyes could tell, "You're out of money?"

Wen Xue was taken aback, "Yes!"

She can make money now, a lot of money, more than 10,000 yuan in a summer vacation!

"Then why are you staring at me?" he teased her deliberately. "And with that look on your face that says you want to say something but are too embarrassed to, what else could it be but that you're broke?"

"No..." She frowned, unable to resist her curiosity any longer, and tentatively asked, "You—"

He Yan waited patiently for her to continue.

But she fell silent again.

He put down his chopsticks and casually picked up the trash. "What?"

"Did I really ask?"

"ask."

"Let me make it clear beforehand, I saw it by accident." She chose her words carefully. "It was yesterday when I got you the hangover medicine, I just happened to see it by accident, not on purpose."

He Yan frowned: "Stop squeezing out the details, just say it all at once."

"Perfume," she mumbled.

"What water?" He didn't hear her clearly, leaned forward, and seeing her stammering, a thought flashed through his mind, "Oh, you mean perfume."

"Um……"

He Yan was speechless. She hung her head, looking like a coward who wanted to ask about gossip but was afraid of angering him. Then, thinking about how this perfume was related to her, he chuckled briefly and simply explained, "A friend of mine wanted to pursue a girl, so he bought a bottle of perfume to give her. Before he could even give her the gift, he was rejected."

Wen Xue immediately looked up at him, "Huh? And then?"

"Then he gave me the perfume."

"..." Wen Xue thought for a moment, then cautiously asked him, "Is the friend you're talking about Brother Yuejiang?"

He Yan paused for a few seconds, then sneered: "If it's him, then he's tired of living."

Wen Xue's shoulders relaxed. "So that's how it is."

"What do you think it is?" He Yan asked suspiciously.

Wen Xue quickly stood up, her eyes darting around, and changed the subject, "You've finished eating? Can we leave now?"

After saying that, she rushed out quickly, feeling guilty, as if she were being chased by a demon.

He Yan shook his head helplessly, picked up the trash and her glass lunchbox, got up to turn off the lights and lock the door. He could still hear her hurried footsteps in the hallway. He called out, "Be careful, don't slip."

He doesn't do anything productive all day long, and he won't even quit that lousy job when asked. All he does is spread rumors about himself in his head.

"Know!"

When I got to the first floor, I saw her standing outside through the glass door, seemingly watching the trucks parked not far away with great interest.

He Yan had a slight thought and found a key hanging on the wall.

When they came out again, he tugged at her arm, pointed to the truck, and tilted his head to ask her, "Have you ever ridden in a truck before?"

A few minutes later, Wen Xue climbed onto the truck with difficulty and sat down obediently. She found everything fascinating and looked around excitedly. He Yan, in the driver's seat, fastened his seatbelt and started the engine one by one. The headlights came on, illuminating the open space in front of them as bright as day.

He noticed her delighted expression and chuckled, "Sit still."

Large trucks are not allowed in the city, so he drove her along a section of the national highway, just for a drive.

The night was quiet. Wen Xue rolled down the car window. Was she sitting too high? She felt like she was on a roller coaster. Her heart was pounding in her throat. The night breeze ruffled her hair, but it wasn't hot at all. She looked at the inky black night sky outside with fascination.

Is this the life He Yan once lived, the roads he drove, and the night sky he once saw?

My mind was screaming.

Ahhhhhhh—

So much freedom!!

He Yan raised his eyebrows slightly, a faint smile appearing on his face.

He gripped the steering wheel, glancing at her occasionally. Fate? It could toy with him again and again, but it couldn't bully her anymore.
