By the time Song Lin changed his clothes, it was already past the time for the yamen to end its duty, so he simply didn't go and sat in his room reading.
Aunt Zhang had already entered the yard and was busy in the kitchen. After a while, the aroma of food came into the room through the crack in the door.
Shen Xu sat at the corner of her desk, drawing on paper with a pen. She had been standing all day and hadn't eaten lunch, so she was already hungry. She quietly pressed her hand to her stomach and adjusted her sitting position slightly.
As soon as Song Lin raised his eyes, he saw her pressing her abdomen, so he put down the book, pushed the door open and went out. When he came back in, he was holding a steaming hot pancake in his hand.
"What are you painting?" He handed her the pancake in his hand and sat next to her to look at the painting in front of her.
There was only the outline of a human face drawn on the paper, without any facial features or other characteristics.
"My brother, Yan." Shen Xu took a big bite of the oil cake, swallowed it with satisfaction, and replied: "I can't remember what he looks like, but he probably looks like this."
Song Lin took a look and couldn't really imagine what her brother looked like from a facial outline portrait, but he still comforted her: "Don't worry, think about it slowly at home, and you will remember something."
Shen Xu nodded, and while eating the fried cake, he tried hard to think of the fragments of memory that flashed through his mind today. He raised the pen high and waved it in the air several times, but couldn't put it down.
After they finished their meal, Song Lin took her for a walk on the street before it got dark. There were very few stalls on the street, and many stall owners were busy packing up and going home to eat.
Shen Xu glanced back at the people coming and going in confusion.
"What are you looking at?"
"nothing."
She stopped in front of a hairpin jewelry stall, her eyes fixed on the lily of the valley pendant. The swaying tassel beads were gently shaking on the stall. She walked over and reached out to touch the beads.
"Miss, you have good taste. Would you like to buy one?" The peddler selling jewelry was originally packing up his stall. When he saw a customer coming, he greeted her enthusiastically.
Shen Xu quickly retracted his hand and shook his head, "No."
Song Lin took off the hair accessory, paid for it, and put it on her head without saying a word.
"What for? It's a waste of money."
"It looks good." Song Lin looked at the lily of the valley string swaying gently on her head with soft eyes. The white flowers like wind chimes were tied on her black hair, adding a touch of cheerfulness and liveliness to her distraught face.
He still prefers to see her smiling face.
"Well, Constable Song rarely praises people." Shen Xu raised his hand to straighten the lily of the valley hairpin and smiled faintly.
Song Lin's face flushed suddenly, and he turned his head away to deny: "I was praising this hairpin."
I thought she would argue with me, but I heard her cold words and calmly said, "Let's go."
A slightly cool hand reached into his palm. Song Lin subconsciously dodged for a moment, then held it tightly.
Shen Xu followed him walking on the street. She looked up at the tall figure in front of her. His steps were steady and his posture was upright. The setting sun outlined a golden edge on his profile.
For a moment, she suddenly felt that there was nothing wrong with living in this small town.
Song Lin suddenly let go of her hand and stopped.
"What's wrong?" Shen Xu also stopped.
He tilted his head and listened carefully. "Did you hear anything?"
Shen Xu also concentrated and listened, but apart from his own heartbeat and the noisy sounds on the street, there was nothing special. "No."
But Song Lin strode towards the edge of the sewage ditch and jumped in following the sound. Shen Xu hurried to follow him and saw that he was stepping into the sewage and searching for something in the garbage.
"What are you doing?"
Song Lin looked up, held up a dirty little puppy in his hands, and smiled at her: "I found a puppy, let's raise it."
Shen Xu was slightly stunned, looking at the handsome boy standing on the garbage pile, with mud on his white sleeves. He was holding a shivering puppy in his hands and smiling at him.
She seemed to be back in the rain that day, the scene where he bought her with an umbrella, his sleeves stained with carbon ash from her scratches, and he smiled at her in the same way.
She turned her gaze to the dirty little dog. It was whimpering, its yellow fur was covered with mud, and it was shivering, just like herself in the miserable state in the rain that day.
After returning home, Song Lin boiled a bucket of hot water and took a bath.
After cooking dinner, Aunt Zhang went home to do her own things. Usually, Song Lin did all the housework after dinner by himself.
Shen Xu washed the dog in the yard and served it a bowl of rice. Fortunately, there was some fish soup left at home today, so he mixed it into the rice.
She squatted on the ground and watched the puppy wagging its tail and eating with big mouthfuls. She smiled at herself, thinking that her miserable appearance at that time was really like this dog.
Song Lin walked out of the house, wiping his wet hair. He squatted down and stretched out his hand to tease her, and said in a gentle voice, "Do you like it?"
"Detective Song likes puppies?"
Song Lin sat on a small stool in the yard, wiping his hair with a towel, and said, "Well, puppies are still more clingy."
"I once picked up a stray cat. It was very wary and would run away when it saw people. It would only come into the yard to eat when no one was around. I kept it for a long time but it didn't get close to me. Later, it ran away on its own and never came back home."
"Well, stray cats are hard to keep." Shen Xu reached out and gently touched the puppy's fur, which had not yet dried, and said faintly, "Constable Song really likes to pick up homeless kittens and puppies."
