Two days later, Shen Xu took the copied books to the bookstall to deliver them.
The bookstall owner flipped through the books in admiration and praised, "Constable Song, you've copied two books so quickly? Even if you're not a constable, you'll probably make a lot of money selling calligraphy and paintings at a stall."
"Thank you for the compliment, Boss." Shen Xu smiled and took two more books from the bookstall. "Then, I'll take a few more books back for my husband."
"Okay, there's no rush for these. I also want to remind Constable Song to rest and not overwork himself and hurt his eyes."
"Well, thank you, boss." Shen Xu nodded while holding the book. He was about to go back when he turned around and saw Yan'er standing behind him.
"Miss Chen." Yan'er was wearing a emerald-white dress. The material looked new, but there were several patches on it.
She was holding a jar of wine in her hand, her face looked very haggard, her hair was dry, and there were red bloodstains on her cracked lips, which was completely different from the look she had seen in the yard that day.
"Yan'er?" Shen Xu stopped and stood still to talk to her.
"Detective Song, do you still need to copy books when you get home?" Her voice was not loud, but it was filled with a hint of anger.
Shen Xu nodded and explained, “Yeah, to make some extra money.”
"His monthly salary is obviously enough for him, so why does he have to copy books to earn extra money when he gets home?" She frowned and questioned, "Don't you know that being a constable is very tiring, running around everywhere every day?"
“???”
Shen Xu felt a little embarrassed, and said with a smile: "Miss Yan'er, you may have misunderstood something, Constable Song--"
"I heard people say that ever since you entered Constable Song's house, all the pots and pans in his house have been ruined by you. He never needed to copy books to make money before." Yan'er's fingers tightly grasped the hem of her skirt, and she seemed very angry.
"Uh...it's true that I caused trouble for Constable Song, but—"
Yan'er interrupted her coldly and continued, "I heard that you were tied to a carriage by human traffickers and dropped off a cliff. Everyone in the carriage died, and you were the only one alive."
"Miss Yan'er, what do you want to say?"
"After you climbed out of the coffin, a couple took you in, but you set their house on fire the next second. They wanted to sell you to a brothel, but the madam didn't want you because you were too unlucky. In the end, you had to force Constable Song to stay, so he bought you."
Shen Xu was a little angry at what she said, "Miss Yan'er, if you just want to talk nonsense to me, please move aside, I have something else to do."
As she said this, she was about to push Yan'er away and go home, but she saw Yan'er grab her arm tightly and block her way.
"What else can you do? You can't do housework, and Constable Song doesn't have any land. What else can you do besides eating and sleeping at Constable Song's house!"
Yan'er pushed Shen Xu hard and cursed, "What kind of magic did you, you vixen, use to bewilder Constable Song?"
Shen Xu staggered back two steps, but did not fall and quickly regained his footing.
"Why are you pushing me!" She pushed back rudely, but Yan'er lost her balance and fell to the ground. The wine jug in her hand broke and the wine spilled all over the floor.
The people on the street heard the noise and gathered around to look. The woman delivering tofu at a nearby stall cried out, "Ah!" and immediately ran over in a rage.
"It's you! The silly girl from Constable Song's family!" She pointed at Shen Xu fiercely and scolded, "How dare you push my daughter!"
Chen Xu held the book in his arms, standing still and speaking calmly, "She was the one who pushed me first with her harsh words."
"You are an uneducated and fatherless girl, and you dare to push others!" Aunt Tofu helped Yan'er up, gently patted the wine stains on her dress, and was about to step forward and scold Shen Xu with glared at her.
"I don't know what kind of magic you used to make Constable Song so confused, you bastard. I think a jinx like you deserves to die in the coffin. If you crawl out, you will only bring disaster to others!"
Yan'er took Aunt Tofu's hand and seemed to have gained confidence. She pointed at Shen Xu and said, "This bitch even asked Constable Song to go home and copy books to make money after his shift. It's obvious that she is not a good person of the Gu family. Maybe she is trying to cheat Constable Song out of his money."
When the neighbors who were watching heard this, they all pointed and talked about Shen Xu.
No wonder Aunt Tofu was so angry.
A few days ago, she and Yan'er went to find Captain Song to propose marriage. At the beginning, everything went well. Captain Song said that since the girl was willing to marry him, he would naturally not let his nephew treat her badly.
But Song Lin refused to agree no matter what, saying that he already had this silly girl and would never marry another one.
At first, she and Captain Song advised him that it was normal for a man to have three wives and four concubines. It was naturally a good thing that the girl was down-to-earth, hardworking, and did not mind being a mistress and was willing to have children for the Song family.
Constable Song had a good income at the yamen, and he could often capture bounty-laden criminals and receive some extra money, so his family had enough money to feed an extra mouth.
The most important thing is that his family has a clean background and skills. His ancestors made tofu in the town. Yan'er's previous experience was also miserable and helpless.
But Song Lin was a stubborn person. He seemed determined to marry only this silly girl and would not listen to any advice.
When talking about the latter part, Song Lin's words were even very unpleasant.
He said, your daughter was raped and you came to give her to Song. Do you really think Song is a rag picker?
Aunt Tofu was immediately unhappy. Her own daughter was a rag, but the silly girl she picked up from the coffin was a treasure?
So she started arguing with Song Lin, saying that the idiot had unknown origins and was brought by human traffickers. She must have been slept with to death and it was unknown whether she could give birth to a child. Constable Song was so cruel as to say that he had no right to think her daughter was dirty.
