"Are they here?"
Xia's mother asked her daughter, who was sitting in the living room, trying to put her legs up on the coffee table, but because she was not very tall, her original "sitting" posture on the sofa gradually turned into "lying" down.
"Almost there, almost there," Xia Li said, pouting.
"You silly girl, why are you so impatient when I ask you something?" Xia's mother scolded.
"But you've been asking me questions ever since I finished lunch."
Xia Li reluctantly put down her phone, glancing sideways at her mother: "And she asks every five minutes or so..."
"Hey, you child—" Xia's mother wanted to scold again.
Xia Li sprang to her feet with a quick movement, tucking her tiny toes into her slippers, and smiled ingratiatingly:
"Shall I ask again for you?"
"—Never mind, it's not good to keep asking. It makes me sound like I'm nagging them."
As she spoke, Xia's mother sat down on the old sofa in the living room.
She had barely sat down when she stood up again, straightening her collar:
"Come on, help me check if anything's wrong. The collar shouldn't be folded down, right?"
Xia Li: ...
She didn't know what her mother was panicking about.
It's her boyfriend, not her mom going on a blind date.
"mom!"
Xia Li said helplessly, "Can't you be a little more composed like my dad?"
Xia's mother glanced at Xia Li's father's memorial tablet and the smiling photo on it showing his white teeth.
She paused for a moment, then said, "He certainly doesn't want to be so composed!"
Xia Li chuckled.
Xia's mother sat down again, and then stood up again:
"Is there anywhere else in the house that's dirty...? Let me clean it a bit more..."
"Mom, you've scrubbed the toilet six or seven times already—"
"It's their first time visiting our home, we can't leave a bad impression—it's not easy for you to find a boyfriend!"
"Mom, you don't even know who he is, yet you're already trying to curry favor with him? What if he's the kind of person you wouldn't even look at?" Xia Li said.
"Anyone who's interested in you, I'm interested in—"
Xia's mother said that, but then she thought about it again and realized it didn't quite make sense: "...That's true, anyone who would be interested in a girl like you probably isn't a normal person..."
Xia Li: ? ?
"Mom, am I your biological daughter?" Xia Li asked.
Xia's mother ignored her unfortunate daughter and was about to scrub the toilet again.
Xia Li said again:
"If you keep doing this, you'll get your new clothes dirty again."
After a pause, Xia's mother thought it made sense and gave up the idea.
Instead, he went to Xia Li's father's memorial tablet, clasped his hands together, and appeared to be praying.
"Old Xia, I've never asked you for anything in my life, so please bless your daughter to find a decent boyfriend—at least he has to be a normal person. It doesn't matter if he's a little slow; anyone who's interested in your daughter probably isn't very bright either, but at least his character has to be good... As for looks, there aren't any requirements, just a nose, eyes, and all four limbs are fine..."
Xia Li: "...Mom, do you think I'm a really, really bad person?"
Xia's mother turned around and smiled gently:
"No, you are your mother's good daughter."
Xia Li was moved: "...Mom!"
Her attempt to move her failed, and Xia's mother's expression changed:
"—But she definitely wouldn't be a good girlfriend."
Xia Li: "Mom!!"
Once again, Xia's mother ignored her daughter and began to offer incense to Old Xia. Amidst the swirling smoke, Old Xia's smile grew even brighter.
Xia Li whimpered and slumped her little bottom onto the sofa.
The sofa undulated slightly at just the right moment.
"Don't underestimate your daughter; she was the one who pursued me~~"
She tilted her smug little face up: "And he's rejected a lot of female seniors' confessions, one of whom had such big breasts!!"
As she spoke, Xia Li even gestured to her chest in a completely unladylike manner.
Seeing this, Xia's mother hesitated before speaking: "Do you really know them well? Don't let anyone brag to you."
“Really? I’ve met that senior before. She’s incredibly beautiful,” Xia Li said.
Xia's mother stopped speaking and then seemed about to say something:
"Um, pears..."
"Um?"
"He should know that we don't have much money, right?"
It took Xia Li a few beats to process what her mother was implying.
"He's not trying to scam money!"
"That's good."
Mrs. Xia breathed a sigh of relief: "You didn't try to seduce me..."
Xia Li raised her eyebrows almost vertically; she wanted to argue something.
But she tried hard to keep quiet:
"Mom, do you remember that guy who came to our shop to make cakes before? He was introduced by Brother Bei."
Xia's mother not only remembered, she practically remembered.
She nodded and said:
"Don't lie to me and say I'm even better than that boy!"
Xia Li shook her head: "No one is better than him."
Xia's mother nodded, then said worriedly, "As long as he's a normal person, I'll be satisfied—"
"But he's no worse than him!"
Xia Li tilted her head back proudly, "He's so handsome, tall and thin, you'll definitely like him!"
Xia's mother didn't believe it at all, but to ease her own tension, she still asked gossipily:
"Then tell me, who's more handsome, your boyfriend or that kid Yi Bei?"
For Xia's mother, Lu Yibei was the pinnacle of talent among teenagers back then.
"Of course—"
If we were talking about anything before Christmas, this question would hardly need to be considered; it would definitely be Brother Bei.
But Xia Li hesitated for a moment, thinking about the fox, thinking about Brother Bei, thinking about the fox again and again.
“…It’s just a different style, but they’re both pretty handsome,” Xia Li said.
