"Cousin, why are you here so early today? The old lady hasn't even gotten up yet." The cook, Madam Chen, greeted with a smile.
"I went to bed early last night and woke up early today, so I came here early." Wanruo rolled up her sleeves and began to prepare the ingredients.
"Oh, you are such a virtuous lady, whoever marries you would be so lucky! We should have told the servants to do it, why did you have to do it yourself?"
Mother Chen said this, but she didn't even move her hand.
Wanruo smiled and said, "The old lady is used to my cooking, so I'd better come in person. I have nothing to do on my left."
"Then you're busy."
Mother Chen said this and went out.
Outside the window came the whispers of the maids: "You're such a lazy old woman! The old lady said she only wanted the cousin's help, but you're pushing all the work onto her!"
"What kind of person from a small family is hanging around here? Do you really think you're the master? Don't you see how powerful the Xie family is? The Third Madam treats her like a maid, so why should I care?"
Then there was a rustling sound of low laughter.
Su Yue was so angry that her face turned pale: "Miss, why don't you go tell the old lady and ask her to punish these stubborn slaves!"
Wan Ruo was indifferent: "It's common for servants to flatter the powerful and bully the weak. What's so strange about that? If the old lady knew about it, she would at most punish them. Later, they would find ways to retaliate against me secretly."
These are all the elderly people in the mansion. Wanruo is not a real master after all. If she offends them, her life will be more difficult in the future.
Su Yue had no choice but to shut up.
After working for half an hour, Wanruo prepared the medicinal food and personally delivered it to the old lady.
"Madam, I made chestnut and yam pig's trotter soup today. Would you like to try it?"
"Now that Miss Wan is here, it's hard for you to keep following an old woman like me around every day." The old lady smiled.
Wanruo brought the soup to the old lady and said with a smile, "The old lady likes the medicinal food I make. I am so happy."
The old lady took a bite and praised it highly: "You are a very skillful girl. The medicinal food you make is much better than those made by the cooks. I feel better every time I wake up these days."
"As long as the old lady likes it." Wanruo said happily.
The old lady ate half a bowl of soup and then asked, "Speaking of which, has your aunt arranged a marriage for you?"
Wanruo's smile faltered slightly, and she shook her head gently: "Not yet, Xiuyun's marriage is still unfinished, so it's natural that my aunt can't take care of me."
The old lady frowned: "Yun girl is only fourteen, not yet of marriageable age, and you are sixteen, you should pay attention to her."
Wan Ruo pursed her lips and forced a smile: "I don't want to get married yet, old lady, please don't worry about me."
"You kid..."
As she was speaking, Nanny Zhuqing came in and said, "Madam, the eldest lady is here."
"Let her in."
The eldest lady came in and bowed, "Dear."
"Why are you here?" The old lady leaned against the soft cushion, and Wanruo stood quietly aside.
The eldest lady smiled and said, "It's Xian'er's wedding. I have a candidate and want you to take a look."
Wanruo pursed her lips and stared at the tip of her shoes.
"Which girl is this?"
"The third daughter of the Jiang family, Xuejun, once met the old lady when she was little, and you praised her for her good looks."
The old lady smiled and nodded. "Now that you mention it, it reminds me that the girl was very cute when she was little. She must be a graceful young lady now that she has grown up. The Jiang family is also a prominent family, and is a good match for our Xie family. She would be a good wife for Xian'er."
"Old Madam, do you think it's good?"
"Have you asked Xian'er what he thinks?"
