Chapter Forty-Seven: Zhao Yu, Let's Never Meet Again
The rain outside intensified, with raindrops pouring down from the eaves like pillars, creating a misty curtain that nearly blurred Zhao Yu's features.
The man had dark, deep-set eyes and extremely black pupils, but his face was unnaturally pale. In the dim light of the room, he remained motionless like a statue for a long time.
On the table was an oil paper package, which was not wet, and inside was a very well preserved Huang Feng Yu (a type of medicinal herb).
Doctor Chen held the herbs and sighed.
What kind of nonsense is this?
A hoarse voice came from inside the room.
"You knew all along?"
Dr. Chen looked on high alert, "I don't know much, I thought you..."
Who knew they were unaware of each other's existence?
It seems that only Xiao Qingyan is still in the dark.
After his outburst of rage subsided, Zhao Yu calmed down and asked Xu Chumian about her initial attempt to seek medical help, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
Dr. Chen had no choice but to start from the beginning: "On my first day back in Beijing, Miss Xu moved in that very night. The next day she came seeking medical help... but I refused her. At that time, I didn't know that the person you asked me to treat was her sister. I even sent someone to the address you mentioned to look for her."
"Later, Xiao Qingyan brought her to see me, and I met her sister..."
The symptoms were similar to what Zhao Yu had described, and only then did Doctor Chen realize that it was the same person, so he agreed to help treat the illness.
Zhao Yu stood up, his eyes filled with hostility. "Why didn't you tell me back then?"
Guan Yan spoke up weakly, "Master, you said back then... that we didn't need to inform you about Miss Xu's matter anymore. It was my carelessness."
This can't be blamed on Guan Yan. He didn't know that Xiao Qingyan was involved in the matter. It was just a coincidence.
Zhao Yu stood with his back to the light, shadows cast beneath his high, straight brows, his eyes deep. Xu Chumian appeared weak and helpless, but she was very opinionated. He had been careless; he should have taken Xu Chumian into his residence the day he was reborn.
He admitted that he had indeed made a mistake in his previous life. Since God had given him and Chu Mian a second chance, he would be with Xu Chu Mian in this life and grow old together. The wound near his heart belatedly ached. He coughed lightly, and blood spilled from his lips again.
Doctor Chen was startled and hurriedly asked, "He'an, are you injured?"
Guan Yan said, "Doctor Chen, please take a look at the young master. This is the second time he has vomited blood."
Zhao Yu's lips were crimson, and his usually cold and aloof face now showed a hint of allure.
Zhao Yu shook his head: "No need."
After saying this, Zhao Yu walked outside and stepped into the rain.
Dr. Chen frowned: "Even a body made of iron can't withstand this kind of abuse."
Guan Yan quickly opened his umbrella and went out: "Sir, your clothes are still wet. Change your dressing and clothes before you go to find Miss Xu..."
When Guan Yan went out, Zhao Yu was no longer there.
...
After Xiao Qingyan left, Xu Chumian sat alone in the room for a long time.
The room was warm from the burning charcoal, and Xu Chumian's skirt was dried.
A moment later, a commotion came from outside the door.
The door opened.
She raised her gaze, first seeing the shadow on the ground, then her eyes swept over the man's dark, soaked clothes, finally settling on Zhao Yu's face.
Zhao Yu stared at her, his eyes cold and complex, the surging, hidden emotions forcing Xu Chumian to look away.
Zhao Yu climbed over the wall to get in. Liu Da and Liu Er heard the noise and came over. When they saw it was Zhao Yu, they hesitated and asked, "Miss?"
Xu Chumian: "It's nothing, you can go down now."
Zhao Yu's arrival was expected.
Zhao Yu strode toward Xu Chumian.
Each step and each sound landed on Xu Chumian's heart.
This time, she did not back down.
Everything should be made clear today.
Xu Chumian stood up, her clear black and white eyes looking at Zhao Yu. Both of them were souls from their past lives, and after five years of marriage, she could sense something was wrong with just a glance.
Silence filled the air.
Xu Chumian pursed her lips. Zhao Yu already knew.
Zhao Yu lowered his eyes, his gaze devoid of warmth. "Why?"
Zhao Yu spoke casually, as if he were asking about something insignificant.
Memories of her past life flashed through Xu Chumian's mind. She looked up and met Zhao Yu's dark eyes, remaining silent for a moment.
Zhao Yu struggled to suppress his anger. His eyes reddened, and he raised his voice, speaking again, "Since you've been reborn... why didn't you come looking for me?"
The sorrow and love from her past life were long gone from Xu Chumian's eyes.
She didn't lose her composure; as if speaking to any stranger, her tone remained calm and gentle: "Zhao Yu, is this still necessary?"
Zhao Yu stared intently at her, his eyes red-rimmed. "What do you mean?"
Xu Chumian was surrounded by Zhao Yu's aura, so suffocating that she could hardly breathe. She looked out the window; the rain showed no signs of stopping, and she wondered if Xiao Qingyan had arrived home yet.
Seeing this, Zhao Yu grabbed Xu Chumian's arm, his voice forced out through clenched teeth, "Thinking about Xiao Qingyan?"
Having known each other for five years, Zhao Yu knew every expression and look in Xu Chuming's eyes, including her helplessness and weariness at this moment...
This realization stung Zhao Yu's eyes, like a sharp blade twisting in his heart.
Zhao Yu was furious, his face dark and gloomy.
"Xu Chumian, speak!"
Xu Chumian made no attempt to hide or evade her gaze; she looked at Zhao Yu with eyes devoid of joy or sorrow.
“Zhao Yu, those things are far away from me now. Let’s just treat them as a dream. I have a new life now, and you… are living happily ever after with her.”
Dream?
Those memories from his past life sustained Zhao Yu through the second half of his life, but in Xu Chumian's words, they were just a fleeting dream.
A soft laugh escaped Zhao Yu's throat; his laughter was extremely cold.
Even if it's a dream, he can make Xu Chumian continue it.
Xu Chumian was Zhao Yu's wife from beginning to end, the one who was buried with him in the same coffin. He met Xu Chumian first, and now that he has been reborn, he wants to grow old with Chumian.
Nobody can cause trouble.
Xu Chumian did not miss the stubbornness and madness deep in his eyes, which sent a chill down her spine.
Xu Chumian stared at him, her gaze warning: "Zhao Yu, don't do anything reckless."
Zhao Yu released her arm and stroked her with his large hand. The faint touch sent shivers down Xu Chumian's spine. Just as his cold fingers were about to touch her cheek, Xu Chumian waved her hand away first.
With a snap—
It was the same location a few days ago.
This time, Xu Chumian used all her strength to say, "Get out."
Zhao Yu's cheeks flushed red as he stared at the woman's tense face, his eyes blazing with uncontrollable rage.
Xu Chumian could hardly breathe. She took a step back and stared intently at Zhao Yu. "If you do anything, I will tell Xiao Qingyan."
A mocking expression appeared on Zhao Yu's face, as if he were satirizing Xu Chumian's naivety.
"Chu Mian, let's make a bet: how long will it take for Xiao Qingyan's vow to be broken?"
Xu Chumian retorted defiantly, "So what? I'm happy with him, something you, Zhao Yu, can't give me."
The future is too long and too far away; Xu Chumian doesn't want to trap herself in the past any longer.
Zhao Yu's eyes bulged as if a storm was brewing, and Xu Chumian's ability to annoy people only increased.
Xu Chumian's eyes were cold: "Zhao Yu, you should leave. Let's not see each other again. I don't want Qingyan to see this and cause any misunderstandings."
Zhao Yu's knuckles turned white from gripping the weight so tightly, and veins bulged on his forehead: "Have you thought this through?"
"I have never been so clear-headed."
After Xu Chumian finished speaking, she looked away, but Zhao Yu's gaze lingered on her for a long time.
He left without saying a word.
The room returned to silence.
The rain outside gradually stopped.
Xu Chumian pushed all the windows open, letting in a chilly breeze.
As she said, her past life was just a dream, and Zhao Yu and the Zhao family had nothing to do with her anymore.
