Chapter Ninety-Nine: The Big Bad Wolf Zhao Yu

Chapter Ninety-Nine: The Big Bad Wolf Zhao Yu

Zhao Yu stared at the person in the room, his eyes swirling with emotions, suppressing the urge to pull her into his arms.

The two looked at each other, the person outside looking tense and repressed. Xu Chuming frowned, "If you have something to say... come in and talk."

Zhao Yu loosened his clenched fist. "Go outside the city after school tomorrow."

Xu Chumian's eyes widened in surprise. She had originally planned to see Madam Li the following afternoon.

She nodded, and couldn't help but call out to Zhao Yu again, "Let's each have a carriage."

Zhao Yu stared at Xu Chumian's slightly tense expression, twitched his lips but didn't say anything.

Xu Chumian's lips twitched slightly, and she said softly, "I'm worried that someone might misunderstand."

Zhao Yu seemed to be more normal these past two days, but Xu Chumian was still worried that he would suddenly go crazy.

At this moment, Zhao Yu made his move.

He stepped into the house.

Xu Chumian was taken aback. Seeing that Zhao Yu looked a bit off, she hadn't even had time to tell Xiao Tao to close the door before Zhao Yu went inside.

The warmth in the room made Zhao Yu's eyes sting. He looked at Xu Chumian, who had taken two steps back, and his eyes held a hint of sarcasm. "So afraid of me?"

Xu Chumian frowned and said, "...No, what's wrong? Is it something about the court?"

This room was smaller than Zhao Yu's, but it was exquisitely and warmly furnished, much like their bedroom in the courtyard in their previous life.

Zhao Yu picked up the cloak hanging behind the screen.

Xu Chumian was startled, thinking she was about to go out.

Where are we going?

Zhao Yu came to Xu Chumian, draped a cloak over her shoulders, and then leaned down to embrace her.

Xu Chumian frowned, "Zhao Yu, let go of me!"

The moment her hand touched Zhao Yu's chest, she stopped abruptly, patted his shoulder and arm, and repeated, "Let go of me!"

Zhao Yu's voice was low.

Just when Xu Chumian thought Zhao Yu was about to go crazy again, Zhao Yu spoke up.

"As you wish."

Xu Chumian glanced at his clothes; he was still wearing the same thin shirt he had worn during the day.

"You should go back first."

Zhao Yu took one last deep look at Xu Chumian before leaving.

Xu Chumian stood there, took off her cloak, and touched her eyes.

It's wet.

A bitter smile played on her lips. It's too late, Zhao Yu.

-

The next morning, Xu Chumian left home half an hour earlier than usual.

Before going to the school, Xu Chumian went back to the Xu family courtyard to get some things.

Her expression faltered slightly when her gaze fell upon the bamboo basket on the shelf by the window.

Inside was an unfinished set of traditional Chinese clothing.

Since Zhao Yu had ruined Xiao Qingyan's birthday gift, Xu Chumian thought of making a new one.

After a moment's thought, she put it back into the package.

After class, Qin Hua kept her behind for a few words. When she left, most of the students had already left.

Since Liu Da went to the Yu family caravan, Liu Er and the other guards have been helping out at the shop.

Nowadays, Zhao Nai mostly follows Xu Chumian.

The carriage was right outside the school; there was only one carriage.

Xu Chumian pursed her lips and stared at the carriage without moving.

"Girl, what's wrong?"

Xu Chumian: "It's nothing."

Zhao Nai drove the carriage, touched his nose, and looked completely unaware.

Xu Chumian lifted the curtain and breathed a slight sigh of relief when she saw that the room was empty.

She got into the carriage, and Xiao Tao and Qiu Niang each sat on either side of her.

The carriage was lined with soft cushions and carpets, and there was a heater in the corner, which warmed Xu Chumian.

She said casually, "Let's go."

Zhao Nai suddenly realized, "The young master and the others are at the city gate."

"Um."

The carriage drove out of the city, followed by a completely black carriage.

The clattering sound of wheels could be heard.

They soon went outside the city, one after the other.

As I entered the house, a neighbor happened to be passing by.

Xu Chumian got off the carriage first.

"Hey, isn't this the Li family's new daughter-in-law?"

Xu Chumian paused slightly, then nodded as a greeting.

"Where is your husband? Why are you two riding in separate carriages?"

Xu Chumian's smile faded slightly. "My husband has caught a cold recently. You two aunts should hurry up and get on with your work."

The gatekeeper also said, "Don't look anymore, don't look anymore."

The two gossipy people, even after they had gone far away, still turned back to look this way.

The doorman asked in a hesitant voice, "Miss Xu..."

Xu Chumian ignored Zhao Yu behind her and went into the mansion first.

Soon after, footsteps could be heard behind them.

Zhao Yu was right behind Xu Chumian; she could see him as soon as she turned her head.

The old lady has recovered some of her spirits in the past two days and recognized the two people who arrived one after the other.

Why did you all come together?

Xu Chumian smiled wryly: "Grandmother, we ran into her on the way here."

Madam Li nodded. "He'an is here too. In the past, whenever He'an and Qingyan drank, they would drink all night long. You can have a good get-together tonight."

Zhao Yu's eyes flickered. "Grandmother... something came up at Qingyan's office, so she asked me to come and visit you."

Madam Li sounded disappointed and snorted, "He's busy, busier than his father. Oh, by the way, a hunter brought over a few rabbits this morning, we'll cook them for dinner."

Xu Chumian pressed on the old lady's shoulder, her eyes stinging with tears. This is good enough.

When it was time for dinner, the old lady was weak and became drowsy after eating a few bites before going back to bed.

Xu Chumian and Zhao Yu also left the mansion.

The two continued walking, one in front of the other.

There were only about a dozen servants in the mansion, not as many as in the Wen family. Many of them had seen Xiao Qingyan leave that day, and now they saw Xu Chumian and Zhao Yu together. The maids and servants were curious but dared not ask.

The two were only polite to each other and exchanged very few words.

It probably wasn't that kind of relationship.

Winter days are short and nights come early. The snow continued to fall on the way back, and the carriage was slower than it had been. Xu Chumian leaned against the carriage wall, lost in thought. She had asked the old lady's doctor that afternoon, and it was only a matter of a few days.

Xu Chumian covered her face with her hands, her eyes were sore and swollen.

Suddenly there was a noise outside, and the carriage stopped moving...

Xiaotao: "Could it be that it got stuck in the snow?"

Xu Chumian felt a slight unease.

Zhao Nai's voice came, "Miss Xu, our carriage is stuck on a rock and we can't get it out for a while. Why don't you ride in the young master's carriage?"

It was snowing heavily outside, and it was nighttime, which was a great test of the driver's eyesight.

Zhao Nai was caught off guard, and the carriage got stuck in a crevice between the rocks.

Xu Chumian frowned slightly, and just then, Guan Yan's voice came from the wind and snow.

Guan Yan: "Miss Xu, the young master asks you to get into the carriage."

In a little while, the temperature outside will drop, and the damp, cold chill will seep into your bones.

Xiao Tao also advised, "Miss, let's go to Lord Zhao's place. If we delay, you might fall ill again."

Xu Chumian frowned and had no choice but to get off the carriage.

A corner of Zhao Yu's carriage curtain peeked out, and the man's voice was indifferent: "Slow down any further, and the snow will soon weigh you down."

Xu Chumian lifted the curtain, but before she could stand up straight, she was pulled by the person inside.

The next moment, Xu Chumian was pressed down and sat down against the car wall.

Xu Chumian lowered her voice: "Let go of me!"

Zhao Yu: "I'm just afraid you'll fall."

Xu Chumian frowned slightly, looking at Zhao Yu without saying a word for a moment.

There wasn't a trace of cold wind in Zhao Yu's carriage; it was even warmer than Xu Chumian's carriage. Xiao Tao and Qiu Niang sat outside the carriage.

As they approached the capital, the carriage suddenly lurched.

Xu Chumian was thrown into Zhao Yu's arms.

As soon as they got close, Xu Chumian immediately moved away.

Zhao Yu's expression turned somber.

For the rest of the time, neither of them spoke.
