Chapter 101 Returning to the City

Xue Fu bought a breakfast, and not long after she slowly finished eating it, the train's public address system announced that the next stop was Haicheng.

Xue Fu was overjoyed and breathed a sigh of relief, finally having made it through.

After the train stopped, Zou Cheng kindly took her suitcase down for her.

After a brief goodbye, Xue Fu didn't pay much attention to the other emotions conveyed in his eyes.

They were just passersby who met by chance; all we can say is, we'll meet again someday.

Xue Fu did not dwell on other people's emotions.

She's in a hurry to see her parents.

Her parents said they would pick her up at the train station today!

Like a weary bird returning to its nest, Xue Fu spotted the couple standing in front of the crowd as soon as she exited the station and immediately ran over to them.

"Mom and Dad!"

I've missed you all so much!

"I'm so tired! Let's go home!"

She lunged forward and was caught by the two of them. The family of three was finally reunited, beaming with joy.

The weariness on her face was obvious, and Ji Yazhi felt sorry for her. She didn't linger at the door to reminisce, but quickly took her home to rest.

"Have you had breakfast yet? Your dad bought some pancakes, have a couple of bites first."

"I've eaten, but I'm not hungry, just sleepy."

"Then let's go home, our home isn't far from here."

"good!"

The original owner's memories were all of Haicheng. She had never left Haicheng except when she went to the countryside by train.

Having taken over the original owner's memories, Xue Fu was naturally familiar with Haicheng as well.

There was no need for her parents to lead the way; Xue Fu walked ahead on her own and found her way to the front door.

"Go take a nap, your dad and I are going out to buy some things." Her mother led her into the bedroom.

Xue Fu's room had been cleaned long ago, just waiting for her return, with newly bought sheets and blankets. The weather had been perfect the past few days, sunny and bright, and the washed and dried sheets had a lazy, sun-kissed scent.

Xue Fu let out a happy shout, went to the bathroom outside to wash up and change into her pajamas, and then lazily snuggled into the covers for a good night's sleep.

She was really tired.

While Xue Fu was sleeping, Ji Yazhi and Xue Mingcheng went out to buy New Year's goods.

They had been busy with the last bit of work before the holiday at their workplace. They finally got a day off yesterday, and after picking up their daughter this morning, they finally had time to prepare for the New Year.

The family of three doesn't eat much; there's no need to buy too much vegetables and meat to pile up at home.

They don't have much contact with their relatives, and both of their parents passed away a few years ago.

On the Xue family's side, Xue Mingcheng recalled from his memory that he had an older brother who served in the army on an island, where he found a local wife, had children, and settled down.

Ji Yazhi's family has a younger brother in Haicheng, but Ji Yazhi and her brother don't get along well because the Ji family is patriarchal.

After getting married, Ji Yazhi almost completely severed ties with the Ji family. They rarely interacted, and after the two elders of the Ji family passed away, they stopped visiting each other altogether, and she wouldn't even visit during the Lunar New Year.

Although there were no relatives visiting from either side, they didn't feel lonely during the New Year. On the contrary, they were even happier that the three of them were undisturbed.

"Isn't this pretty? It would look wonderful to make a dress for Rongrong." Ji Yazhi saw a piece of light yellow fabric. This color was rare, not too dull, and most suitable for a girl like Xue Fu.

The Xue family has always spoiled their daughter, and Xue Mingcheng simply waved his hand and said, "Buy it!"

"What about this?" The couple strolled over to the watch counter.

Ji Yazhi lowered her eyes, then suddenly focused her mind to recall, somewhat uncertainly asking, "Didn't Rongrong have a watch? But I don't remember who bought it?"

Ji Yazhi remembered seeing the watch on her daughter's wrist when she last went to the countryside, but she didn't pay much attention to it at the time.

I only remembered this now that I've come this way.

She searched her memory but couldn't recall anything. The watch on her daughter's wrist probably wasn't bought by her.

Ji Yazhi looked at Xue Mingcheng, who was also bewildered, and shook his head: "I didn't buy it, I didn't buy it."

The two looked at each other and both thought of one person: oh... that's the one their future son-in-law bought.

After preparing lunch, they went to wake Xue Fu up for the meal, but Xue Fu was too sleepy and struggled several times but couldn't get out of bed.

A thin layer of dark circles appeared under her eyes, which made the couple feel sorry for her. They didn't wake her up again, but instead prepared a special portion of food and kept it warm on the stove.

Xue Fu slept until dark, for almost ten hours, and felt refreshed. When she opened her eyes, she was in a very good mood.

She glanced at the time and then left the bedroom.

In the living room, her mother sat on the sofa reading the newspaper, occasionally raising her hand to draw a couple of lines on it with a pen.

His father was bent over at the dining table, holding a brush dipped in ink, writing couplets. The bright red paper was what they had bought on the street that morning.

"Mom, Dad," Xue Fu called out, trying to get their attention.

Perhaps because some time had passed, her parents no longer showed the excitement of a family reunion. They glanced at her indifferently and then sent her off to eat.

"Are you up? Go eat if you're hungry, the food's in the pot."

Xue Fu pouted: "Okay."

She knew that distance makes the heart grow fonder!

In the morning, her mother and father were still being affectionate with her; she was still the Xue family's little darling. But after waking up, she turned into a little cabbage by the roadside, available for sale everywhere.

Xue Fu was hungry, and as she ate her father's cooking, which she hadn't had in a long time, she squinted her eyes and felt very happy.

"Rongrong, take a look at the newspapers these days and learn about layout and formatting." Her mother came over and put a stack of newspapers on the dining table. "When you're in your third year of junior high, I'll take you to meet some people. You need to settle down on a job."

Ji Yazhi made the arrangements, and Xue Fu nodded, looking down at the stack of newspapers, which she estimated to be about four or five centimeters thick.

"good."

Speaking of this, Xue Mingcheng stopped writing and pulled out two thick notebooks from somewhere, stacking them on top of the newspaper.

"Also, as we know, the college entrance examination will be reinstated this winter. You need to focus on your studies too. Here are some key points that Dad has prepared for you, which only cover current affairs and literature. Dad can't help you with anything else, so you'll have to work hard on your own."

Her father's eyes were filled with eagerness, fearing that she would fail the exam and become the only one in the family with a high school diploma.

It's not that she feels ashamed of having a high school diploma, but if she wants to return to the city permanently, taking the college entrance examination is the easiest way.

Actually, they could have taken other steps to find Xue Fu a formal job in the city, but those formal jobs were either factory assembly line workers or jobs that involved three shifts or night shifts, which their daughter definitely couldn't handle.

It's better to endure the hardship of studying, read more books and newspapers, and become more astute so you won't be easily deceived when you enter the workforce.
