Chapter 18 Going to the Countryside

Gu Fei, being quick-witted, scratched his head and chuckled foolishly, saying he understood.

Gu Fei said, "I just think this older sister is a very nice person. She likes to laugh, and her smile is very beautiful."

Gu Fei pursed his lips. He really liked Sister Afu: "There isn't such a beautiful sister in the village. Neither Tiezi nor Ahu have a sister."

Gu Fei is already a little adult and understands many things.

The older brother is the sole breadwinner in their family, without any support from their parents or elders.

He really wanted his brother to find a wife and bring her home.

In the village, all the men my brother is old enough to be married, and some of the children are even old enough to work in the fields.

Gu Fei also knew the reason why her brother had not married or had children.

One is someone I don't like.

Another reason is because of him, this burden.

Gu Fei's affection for Xue Fu was quite obvious, which made Gu Chong hesitate.

He looked down at Gu Fei, then looked away after a few seconds, and then casually asked, "You like her that much? What do you like about her?"

Gu Fei secretly glanced at his brother's reaction. He had known his brother for so many years, how could he not see through his brother's hypocrisy at this moment?

Gu Fei chuckled inwardly, but still answered obediently on the surface.

"Sister Afu is a very nice person."

As she spoke, Gu Fei blushed.

He had only done something very small, simply handing her a pair of chopsticks, and then he heard Sister Afu praise him in a proud tone for being sensible and cute.

"Although Sister Afu doesn't do housework, her attitude is always very proper."

"Besides," Gu Fei stammered, looking down and touching his nose, "our family doesn't need my sister to know how to do housework. Brother, you can do it, right? I can do it too. We both have hands, so we don't need Afu to teach my sister these things."

Gu Chong: ...

His feelings were complicated.

Xue Fu did nothing, yet her younger brother was bribed and his heart turned towards her.

Gu Chong shook his head slightly, telling him to go to sleep and not worry about these things.

Gu Fei raised his dark eyes and glanced at his brother a few more times before finally obediently returning to his room to rest.

Gu Chong was left alone in the courtyard.

When Xue Fu returned to the educated youth settlement, they were having dinner.

Several curious glances were cast as she returned carrying her things.

There were empty seats next to Liu Ling and Li Jing, so she beckoned Xue Fu, who was standing by the door, to come and sit down: "Come and eat, Xue Fu."

Xue Fu watched them sitting around the large round table in the main room.

The meal on the table for tonight is sweet potato rice and green bean soup.

There was no way to keep the fact that they were going to share a meal from them, so Xue Fu carefully considered how to bring it up.

Bringing up this topic out of the blue is actually quite awkward.

Seeing her standing at the door, Zheng Peipei looked over and asked, "Why aren't you coming over, Xue Fu?"

“Um,” Xue Fu cleared her throat, raising her voice slightly, “everyone, I have something to say.”

Zhao Wen put down his bowl, and everyone else looked over.

Xue Fu took a deep breath and blurted it out.

"I've decided to eat with the villagers instead of eating with them anymore."

Xue Fu looked at the several faces opposite her, each with a different expression.

Zhao Wen, whose expression was the most calm and composed, asked her, "When does it start? Have you told the captain?"

Xue Fu smiled apologetically at him: "Starting tomorrow, I'll talk to the captain tomorrow."

Zhao Wen hummed in agreement and didn't ask any further questions.

The most agitated person was Sun Yu. His face turned cold, and he looked at Xue Fu with a puzzled yet somewhat mocking gaze.

He asked, "Xue Fu, who are you partnering with?"

Xue Fu glared back, not wanting to pay any attention, but partnering with Gu Chong wasn't something shameful.

She thought for a moment and then mentioned Gu Chong's name.

Many people frowned upon hearing that it was Gu Chong.

Although there was always a gap between the educated youth and the villagers, and they could not integrate into each other's lives.

But they generally knew who the villagers were and what their personalities were.

Gu Chong is a typical example.

He was considered a promising young talent in the village, shouldering the responsibility of the family at a young age.

However, he had a difficult personality and was unyielding to both gentle persuasion and force, so the educated youth hardly interacted with him.

However, there weren't many people in the village who had any interaction or were on good terms with Gu Chong.

Gu Chong usually acts alone, so why is he willing to talk to Xue Fu this time?

He even agreed to let Xue Fu eat at his house.

Everyone had their own guesses about the reasons behind it, but none of them asked Xue Fu in front of her.

Sun Yu's expression became even stranger. His handsome, scholarly face looked slightly distorted, making Xue Fu sense his barely concealed malice and gloom.

Xue Fu wanted to go back inside and ignore him.

But Sun Yu's mouth just wouldn't close.

"Xue Fu, why did you go outside to eat with other people?" Sun Yu's words were sarcastic and meant to stir up trouble. "Is it because you can't stand the food at the educated youth settlement?"

Xue Fu felt that Sun Yu's provocation was really low-level.

She sighed softly, suddenly wondering why no one in the original book or storyline discovered his true nature, given how stupid he was.

She didn't respond to his comment, but instead calmly and gently explained it to herself.

Xue Fu said, "I can't cook, and I'll cause trouble if I start a fire. It's too much trouble to always ask everyone for help. If I distribute my work sooner, it will reduce the trouble for everyone."

Xue Fu spoke from the heart.

Although the conflict between Xue Fu and the educated youth at the settlement has not yet become apparent, it does not mean that the conflict does not exist.

It was only because she was a newly arrived educated youth that everyone still showed her some consideration.

But what if life goes on? Everyone works so hard in the fields, who wants to be accommodating to others after a long day's work?

If she doesn't find someone to share meals with, Xue Fu can't guarantee them when she'll learn to cook, start a fire, and do other household chores...

Sun Yu wasn't finished yet. He chuckled and said, "You went out to eat, but you'll still use the communal supplies. As long as you stay here, you'll use the water that everyone carries back, and the firewood for cooking."

Xue Fu had of course thought of these questions as well, so she answered as soon as Sun Yu finished speaking.

“Yes, I know.” Xue Fu didn’t look at Sun Yu, but turned her head to discuss with Zhao Wen and the others, “I won’t take advantage of anyone, so I will provide two catties of white flour every month as a subsidy for my borrowing of firewood and water.”

Xue Fu: "What do you guys think?"

Among the educated youth in the settlement, besides Xue Fu, the only other family with slightly better financial conditions was Li Jing.

Most of the others lived frugally.

Everyone was more than happy to agree if it could improve their meals.

After all, Xue Fu doesn't need much firewood or water by herself.

And that white flour is a good thing.

They only used pure white flour to make steamed buns and mantou during festivals.

Fearing that Xue Fu might change her mind, the others urged Zhao Wen to agree quickly with their eyes.

Only Sun Yu stubbornly refused to agree.

But the educated youth settlement was a collective, and the minority had to obey the majority. Zhao Wen glanced at the others and nodded to Xue Fu.

Xue Fu smiled and replied, "Thank you."

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Sun Yu's face turn pale with anger and couldn't help but chuckle to herself.

She didn't care about these trolls with unknown motives; she hoped they would drive her crazy.
