Chapter 38 Going to the Countryside

As usual, Xue Fu squinted and sat up in bed after hearing the others get up.

After calming down for a while, she got up, dressed, and went outside to wash up. Then she moved a small stool to the door and sat there waiting for Gu Chong to bring her food.

Gu Chonggang was spotted by Xue Fu as soon as he turned the corner.

Xue Fu immediately stood up from the stool and waved to him from a distance.

"Good morning!"

"morning."

Xue Fu took a few steps toward him to close the distance.

However, she noticed that Gu Chong didn't look too good.

Although his skin wasn't tanned white, the dark circles under his eyes were still noticeable, and Xue Fu noticed them at a glance.

She frowned slightly, and the moment she noticed, she asked the question.

"Gu Chong, didn't you sleep well last night?"

He gave a soft "hmm," his expression somewhat indifferent.

Gu Chong not only looked like he hadn't slept well, but he also seemed to be in a bad mood.

In Xue Fu's eyes, Gu Chong was a very emotionally stable person, so his current state made her uneasy.

She leaned forward slightly to get a closer look.

So she confirmed her suspicions: Gu Chong was indeed acting strangely today.

He just avoided eye contact with her! He didn't look her in the eyes!

You have something to hide!

Xue Fu then distanced herself again, returning to normal social distancing.

She asked earnestly, "What happened?"

She pursed her lips: "Is there anything I can help with?"

Gu Chong barely slept last night.

Lying in bed with my eyes closed, my mind is a jumble of thoughts.

He was thinking about Xue Fu.

Actually, he wasn't thinking; to put it another way, he was planning.

He was plotting how he could keep her.

He really liked her.

From the first glance at Xue Fu, the educated youth from the city, one could already see the signs of something.

At first, Gu Chong was very self-aware; he knew that the two of them were worlds apart and there was no possibility of a relationship.

So he drew a clear line for himself, neither crossing it nor getting too close.

But Xue Fu herself took the initiative to come closer and cross that line.

He didn't make any mistakes, but he's already lost his defense and his composure.

Gu Chong was naturally unwilling to give up.

It was clearly Xue Fu who provoked him first.

He was completely innocent.

Even if Xue Fu is interested in and curious about He Luosheng, so what?

Even if He Luosheng is the village secretary's son and his family is wealthier than Gu Chongyin's, so what?

Aren't they also from the same background as him, toiling in the fields for a living?

Is there any fundamental difference between him and me?

Isn't that a world of difference?

Why would someone treat He Luosheng differently?

If they can treat He Luosheng differently, then can't he do the same?

He is just as good.

Gu Chong thought that apart from not having urban residency and having a rural household registration, he could fight for anything she wanted.

"You..." Gu Chong's lips moved slightly. He lowered his eyes and noticed a stray strand of hair on her cheek that she hadn't combed properly after getting up. He raised his hand to tidy it up for her and then glanced behind her ear.

He finally managed to ask the question that had been stuck in his throat all night.

Do you like He Luosheng?

He succinctly stated his points in one breath.

Love can make people feel anxious and insecure.

Gu Chong had never had such an experience before.

His heart was full of other people, worrying that they didn't like him, or that they had someone else in their heart.

He even became the very thing he used to despise.

He was even thinking about how, if Xue Fu really didn't like him and was really interested in He Luosheng, he could exaggerate and belittle He Luosheng and try to steal her away.

Xue Fu: ?

"What?" Xue Fu was completely puzzled when she heard Gu Chong say the name He Luosheng.

She didn't even quite understand the context of his words.

"who?"

Who do you think I like?

She asked several questions in a row, her expression one of astonishment and confusion.

Xue Fu doubted that she had heard clearly or misheard.

But when she met Gu Chong's dark eyes, she was certain that this was exactly what he had asked.

Xue Fu was so frightened that she almost choked on the air.

How dare she?

Do you like He Luosheng?

She likes the kind of guy who's two-faced, seemingly gentle but actually a black-hearted bastard. Does she have a death wish?

Xue Fu quickly shook her head in denial.

"No, how could that be? I don't know him at all, how could I possibly like him?"

Gu Chong subtly bobbed his Adam's apple a few times.

Her bewildered and surprised reaction greatly pleased Gu Chong.

Even though he heard her denial and obvious rebuttal, he couldn't help but want to hear it again and confirm this answer that pleased him so much.

He smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners and his lips curving upwards: "Really?"

Xue Fu almost raised her hand and swore an oath in front of him: "It really couldn't be more true."

She clarified this terrifying question once again.

What Xue Fu couldn't understand was: "Why did you suddenly ask such a question? It's terrifying."

Xue Fu had never had any contact with He Luosheng, so how could Gu Chong connect her with He Luosheng?

That's absurd.

Gu Chong felt a little embarrassed and lowered his gaze to the ground, where he saw the shadow cast by the rising sun on her body and onto the muddy ground.

“That’s what Afei said.”

Gu Chong, without any remorse, shifted the blame onto his younger brother.

Xue Fu: ...?

While children may speak without thinking, this is just too much...

Xue Fu took a few deep breaths to calm herself down.

She said, "Why would my brother suddenly say something like that?"

Xue Fu didn't think she had done anything that would cause Gu Fei to misunderstand.

It's simply unbelievable.

Gu Chong explained for his brother: "Then why were you staring at him?"

Xue Fu suddenly understood.

So that's the reason.

Xue Fu pursed her lips guiltily; she had indeed stared at it for a while.

Gu Chong only saw her beautiful fox-like eyes darting around, and then heard her say, "I was just spacing out."

She said, "I've never even spoken to He Luosheng, how could I possibly like him? Besides..."

Xue Fu subconsciously wanted to blurt out that He Luosheng and Li Jing were clearly a couple.

But she held back these words; she couldn't say them.

Gu Chong didn't hear the rest of her sentence and asked in confusion, "Huh?"

But Xue Fu changed the subject with her next sentence, turning her attention directly to him.

She said, "Do you believe everything Xiao Fei says?"

There was a hint of grievance in her voice. She felt that Gu Chong didn't trust her!

Gu Chong: ...

"I'm sorry," he apologized practiced smoothly. "It won't happen again."

Xue Fu frowned: "Next time?"

Gu Chong: "There will be no next time."

Xue Fu was satisfied.

At the same time, Gu Chong was also very satisfied.

Anyway, it's fine as long as I don't fancy He Luosheng.

He will work hard to get the rest himself.

Gu Chong handed her the warm breakfast box, then rubbed his fingertips together behind his back.

He started talking about other things.

"I'm leaving for a few days tonight," he said. "Afei will bring you breakfast in the morning, and for lunch and dinner, you and Afei can make do for the next few days, okay?"

But Gu Chong's "making do" is by no means making do.

He had prepared all the groceries for the week. Worried that the meat would spoil if left out too long, he somehow got hold of a piece of cured pork and told his younger brother to cook it this week.

"If you're going out, let Afei go with you."

Xue Fu was stunned by his sudden announcement of his departure. She stared at him intently, suddenly feeling nervous and uneasy.

When are you coming back?

The dependence in Xue Fu's eyes softened Gu Chong's heart again, like sinking into a swamp of confusion, where one glance would only draw him deeper.
