Chapter 9 Going to the Countryside

Gu Chong looked down and saw that there was indeed a grasshopper on her trouser leg, its leg hooked onto the fabric.

Xue Fu kept shaking her legs and jumping up and down, trying to shake the bugs off her body.

She trembled several times, trying to see if it had fallen off. Her gaze accidentally drifted down again, and she saw that the stubborn bug was still clinging to her pants. She was horrified and screamed, lunging at the person in front of her.

She instinctively wanted to climb on him, so she jumped up, wrapped her legs around his waist, and rubbed against him while hugging his shoulders.

"Ah! Gu Chong!" she cried out his name in a panic.

Gu Chong froze completely because of this unexpected incident.

Instinctively, he reached for her leg, trying to lower her, but she clung tightly to his waist. Then he heard her trembling, delicate voice calling his name: "Gu Chong, Gu Chong..."

He froze even more, his heart pounding.

Then, very mechanically, he shoved the insects off her and threw them far away into the field.

Gu Chong heard his own voice become hoarse at some point. He said, "It's off. There are no more bugs, Xue Fu."

He involuntarily swallowed hard, forcing himself to ignore the softness he was feeling.

But the more you try not to remember, the clearer you feel it.

Her hair smells so good...

It doesn't smell like regular soapberry; instead, it has a light floral scent—not strong, but very pleasant. You can only smell it when you get very close.

Hearing that there were no insects, Xue Fu took several more breaths before her rationality returned.

She noticed their awkward position and instinctively shifted, trying to create some distance and jump off him.

However, because his hand was stuck in the back of her legs, she was stuck and couldn't get down.

She licked her lower lip, her voice tightening, "Gu Chong, you can let go of me now..."

Her voice grew softer and softer as she spoke, and she became increasingly embarrassed.

Gu Chong realized what was happening, pulled his hand away as if it were burning his own, and put her down.

As soon as she stepped onto the ground, Xue Fu saw Gu Chong quickly retreat seven or eight steps, the two of them standing several meters apart, staring at each other.

Just as Xue Fu was about to say thank you, she heard him say, "You should go back now, I'm leaving."

He lowered his eyes, avoiding her with an air of mystery.

Xue Fu saw him turn around and stride away, but upon closer inspection, she noticed that his posture looked somewhat stiff.

His face didn't show it, but his earlobes were quite red.

Xue Fu immediately realized what she was thinking.

This era was characterized by its unique simplicity and purity.

They are both reserved and modest when it comes to relationships between men and women.

What they just did was really overstepping their bounds.

Xue Fu, with her modern mindset, felt there was nothing wrong with it, but Gu Chongshi was a true native of this era.

Xue Fu suddenly felt a little worried. Would Gu Chong stop talking to her because of this?

She watched Gu Chong flee as if escaping, her heart gradually tightening.

Team leader Zhou Jianguo inspected the village warehouse before finally opening his own front door under the moonlight.

As soon as he entered the door, he saw his wife's face beaming with uncontrollable joy. Zhou Jianguo's eyelids twitched, and he immediately asked, "Why are you so happy? What's wrong?"

Team leader's aunt, Li Fuying, invited Zhou Jianguo to eat first, and they would talk after he finished eating.

Li Fuying also knew what kind of personality her old man had; he didn't like cultivating those kinds of relationships.

Under Zhou Jianguo's leadership, the atmosphere in their team was much better than in the other neighboring villages.

Li Fuying knew perfectly well what was going on in the neighboring villages.

But the young girl didn't have any big demands; changing to an easier job was a small matter.

Moreover, this girl doesn't look like she can do any hard work.

If they assign her tasks she can't handle, and something goes wrong, it will be their brigade that suffers the consequences.

Li Fuying accepted it.

While Zhou Jianguo was eating, he was wondering what good thing his wife had gotten. Just as he put down his bowl, he heard his wife tell him all about it.

Zhou Jianguo: ......

He sighed deeply.

What can we do now that we've already taken everything?

He glared at his wife, wondering where else he could find an easier job.

Xue Fu got up early today; it was her turn to cook.

Last night she quickly learned how to cook porridge.

The porridge was easy to cook, but the stove fire was very difficult to light.

Xue Fu had been busy for ages, burning through half a box of matches, but still couldn't get a fire going. Breakfast was just a pot of plain water with rice soaked in it.

Zhao Wen got up early to fetch two buckets of water, and when he poured them into the kitchen vat, he saw Xue Fu struggling with the firewood.

The little girl tried to start a fire, but the fire failed, and her face ended up covered in soot.

Zhao Wen's heart skipped a beat when he saw that there was only half a box of matches left. He quickly snatched the remaining matches from her hand.

"Comrade Xue Fu, I'll start the fire, you go and cook."

Xue Fu wiped away the sweat that had appeared in her haste to light the fire, feeling somewhat embarrassed.

She knew she had wasted a lot of matches, and she said, "I'll make up for it."

She didn't want to be accused of taking advantage of others or freeloading anymore.

Zhao Wen nodded; indeed, a lot of matches had been wasted. It was unfair to the other educated youth.

Zhao Wen helped her start the fire, and Xue Fu used chopsticks to pick up a cucumber and a leaf of pickled cabbage from the pickle jar next to her, to serve as a side dish with her porridge.

That's about all the cooking skills she has.

When the others got up and saw the white porridge and kimchi, they didn't say anything. That was all they had.

Xue Fu washed her face again, tidied herself up, and went out with Zheng Peipei.

On the way there, she felt a restless urge.

I wonder what kind of task the captain will assign her.

Xue Fu was also self-aware enough to know that it certainly wouldn't be an easy job like a scorekeeper.

However, she was also looking forward to it.

After the group dispersed, as expected, team leader Zhou Jianguo called her back.

Xue Fu did not show her joy and walked over discreetly.

However, she naturally wore a smile when speaking to Zhou Jianguo.

"How do you feel about being assigned to feed the fish?" Zhou Jianguo looked at Xue Fu, feeling helpless.

After much thought, this is the only relatively easy job for now. However, the work points aren't high.

Zhou Jianguo also told her frankly, "This job is indeed easy, but it only pays four work points a day. Comrade Xue Fu, can you accept that?"

Four work points, barely enough to make ends meet.

Xue Fu immediately nodded: "Of course I'm willing!"

Feeding the fish is so much easier than pulling weeds, only a fool wouldn't agree to that!

Having fewer work points is not a problem.

Anyway, if she pulls weeds, she only gets five work points a day.

Zhou Jianguo understood and led Xue Fu eastward.

Qingtang Village is, of course, a place with fish ponds.

Their village has three fishponds, which is also an important production area that needs to be taken care of.

The little fish fry inside are all treasures of the village.

Zhou Jianguo was also worried that if the task of feeding the fish was easily handed over to Xue Fu, she would kill all the small fish.

We need to find a mentor to guide her.

Zhou Jianguo had someone in mind to be his mentor.

They headed east, a direction Xue Fu was very familiar with; it was the place where she had pulled weeds a few days ago.

Team leader Zhou Jianguo happened to lead her to stop under the shade of a tree next to the weeding area. Xue Fu would come here to rest in the shade when it was too hot to continue working a few days ago.

Zhou Jianguo told her to wait there while he went to find someone.

Xue Fu nodded, and then she saw Zhou Jianguo walk to the side and shout to the people who were hoeing the ground.

"Gu Chong! Gu Chong! Come here!"

Xue Fu's gaze sharpened, her eyes landing firmly on the people in the field.
