Xue Fu nodded, "Okay, okay!"
She has someone backing her up! She's not going to be a pushover or a fool!
“Oh, right, one last thing,” her mother said, staring at her intently, “you must study hard, okay? Don’t forget.”
Xue Fu pursed her lips and promised, "I will definitely study hard and do my best in my studies!"
She would never miss the opportunity to take the college entrance examination.
The train whistled, and Xue Fu departed, embarking once again on a journey of a thousand kilometers.
On the train, Xue Fu lay listlessly all night without getting any rest.
All I could hear was the clanging of green train wheels.
She closed her eyes and tried to rest, finally waiting until the train arrived in the provincial capital the next day at dawn.
She had a sullen face, looked pale, and was completely listless.
I wasn't as excited or thrilled as I had initially imagined.
Xue Fu just wants to find a place to sleep soundly.
Of course, when she thought of Gu Chong waiting for her outside, she at least took a breath, rolled her eyelids, tried to open her eyes wide, and a hint of girlish joy rippled in her eyes.
Xue Fu sniffed, and before getting out of the car, she took a handkerchief, dampened it with water, and wiped her face.
The cool, damp cloth helped her clear her head a little, and then, following the flow of people and the announcement of the arrival station, she got off the train with her suitcase.
Many people got off at the provincial capital station, creating a noisy and crowded scene.
Xue Fu didn't join the crowd. Carrying her suitcase, she waited until almost everyone who got off the train had left before slowly walking out.
When she saw the exit sign, she quickened her pace, eager to see the person waiting for her outside.
Gu Chong arrived at the train station early in the morning and stood there like a sentry, his eyes fixed on the exit, searching for the person he was looking for.
He was anxious; he even considered buying another train ticket to go directly to the station and pick up Xue Fu as soon as she got off the train.
He stared longingly, and finally saw the little girl who was walking at the very back of the crowd, the prettiest and most charming one.
His face lit up with joy, and he immediately grinned, taking large strides towards Xue Fu.
"Afu!" He was like a young boy, unable to contain his joy at the reunion, calling her name from several meters away.
Xue Fu saw him too. The fatigue she felt from seeing her lover lessened considerably, and longing overcame her exhaustion. She perked up, raised her hand, and waved to him, calling out loudly, "Hey, I'm here!!!"
Before she could take another step, Gu Chong had already walked up to her, and Xue Fu was pulled into a warm and familiar embrace, which she couldn't wait to enter.
He was exceptionally enthusiastic.
Xue Fu blushed from the heat, her face flushed with shyness. Then, she came to her senses and noticed the scrutinizing gazes of passersby. Although there was no disdain in their eyes, they frowned, clearly disapproving of this public display of intimacy.
Feeling guilty under her gaze, Xue Fu proactively raised her hand and patted Gu Chong's lower back, indicating that he could let go.
"Okay, let's not block the way."
"Um."
Gu Chong ended the hug, let go of her, and then casually took the luggage from her hands.
He asked her with concern, "Are you hungry? Shall we go have breakfast first? The bus to the county town won't leave for another hour."
"Okay, sure." She was a little hungry too.
Yesterday, her dad prepared a box of food for her, which she ate mostly with hot water on the train. Today, because she didn't sleep well last night, she didn't have much of an appetite, and she didn't buy breakfast on the train this morning.
After getting off the car and breathing in some fresh air, she felt a little more energetic. She touched her stomach and felt the belated hunger.
"Oh, right."
On the way to dinner, Gu Chong started a conversation, but after a two-second pause, Xue Fu didn't hear what he said next.
She hummed in response, looking up at him with some confusion, only to be met with his bright red, blood-red earlobes.
Her gaze swept over him again, and she noticed his slightly unnatural expression.
Xue Fu: ?
Why are you suddenly acting shy?
She was a little confused, but also inexplicably felt uneasy. She licked her lips to moisten them before asking, "Why aren't you saying anything?"
After they reached a less crowded area, Gu Chong finally spoke, but his voice was so low and deep that Xue Fu didn't hear him clearly at first, only catching the last two words—
He said, "...you..."
Xue Fu: "Huh?"
She blinked, her watery fox-like eyes looking completely bewildered as she stared at him, seemingly at a loss.
She sniffed, observing his expression, especially his ears: "What did you say? I didn't hear you clearly."
She wasn't trying to make things difficult for him; she genuinely didn't hear him clearly!
What is it that you have to say so quietly?
Gu Chong coughed, slightly turned his eyes away, and drooped his eyelashes.
He rarely said such things, so he felt a little uncomfortable and embarrassed.
But before she left, she gave him several earnest instructions, which he remembered very well.
He also wanted to tell her, to tell her.
"I miss you."
He raised his voice, making it clearer.
Xue Fu heard it all clearly.
Gu Chong noticed that her eyes were sparkling with tears, and when she looked up at him, her gaze was full of affection. Without saying a word, her tenderness and affection were fully conveyed.
Gu Chong swallowed hard, then couldn't help repeating, "These past few days, I've missed you terribly. And you, have you been missing me too?"
He stared intently at her expression, noticing that she, like him, was flushed with a rosy glow, and then heard her say, "Of course I've thought about it seriously."
He nodded seriously, holding his breath, and gave a deep reply: "Mm."
But his dark eyes, though seemingly innocent, were already curved into a smile as he looked at her.
Xue Fu thought to herself, "Now he knows how to pretend. What a hypocrite."
However, this side of Gu Chong made her even happier.
Even the usually taciturn man can now say sweet words to coax girls.
There has been progress.
She'll mold that silent guy into a honey pot sooner or later!
After eating breakfast, as the saying goes, a full stomach makes one sleepy, and the drowsiness that Xue Fu had suppressed resurfaced.
She tugged at Gu Chong's sleeve, not hiding her feelings: "I'm so sleepy."
Gu Chong had noticed her drowsiness long ago.
Xue Fu had fair skin with a thin layer of skin on her face, making the dark circles under her eyes even more noticeable.
Gu Chong knew without a doubt that she hadn't rested well on the train yesterday.
He was heartbroken, and his resolve to go to Haicheng in the future only strengthened.
He didn't want Xue Fu to have to travel thousands of kilometers back and forth like this again.
