Chapter 40 Going to the Countryside

Risk and opportunity are twins, born together.

Gu Chong, travel-worn and weary, returned to the county from the south in a truck.

In fact, it was only a short seven days, but Gu Chong felt like he had been gone for seven years.

He misses her very much.

Gu Chong's journey was fraught with danger and hardship.

However, once the return was successful, the journey became smooth and easy.

Gu Chong tugged at the sleeve, which had been re-stitched and now had several obvious patches, and carefully covered the white gauze wrapped around his arm.

Zhou Zhi sat next to him, his eyes were dark, but he looked radiant and full of energy.

Zhou Zhi looked at Gu Chong's actions, pouted, and said with disapproval: "Are you really not going to go to the hospital to get checked out? Is your husband just going to be tied up like this?"

Gu Chong shook his head; he knew what he was doing.

The injury only looks scary; it's actually very shallow and didn't penetrate inside.

No need to go to the hospital.

Gu Chong would rather spend the time he would waste at the hospital on his way to see her.

Zhou Zhi sighed helplessly, but didn't try to persuade him further: "Alright."

Zhou Zhi glanced at his pale face and said, "Go back and get some rest. You've had the hardest journey."

Gu Chong nodded casually, then asked, "How much longer until we reach town?"

The truck driver they were on was from the same town as them, and they could hitch a ride back home after unloading the goods.

Zhou Zhi had just asked the driver this question, so he immediately replied to Gu Chong, "About two more hours."

Zhou Zhi saw Gu Chong frown and become somewhat impatient, but he kept quiet and didn't say anything.

Zhou Zhi became increasingly curious about what Gu Chong was hiding at home that made him so eager to go back.

He couldn't resist asking, "Why are you in such a hurry? Are you worried about Xiao Fei? Or... are you keeping a mistress?"

Zhou Zhi chuckled; he genuinely found his last sentence rather amusing.

He had known Gu Chong for so many years, and Gu Chong really didn't have much luck with women. He had never heard Gu Chong mention the name of any girl in the village.

Occasionally, Zhou Zhi would genuinely worry that his friend might end up as a lifeless, unambitious bachelor.

Zhou Zhi's gossipy attitude only earned him a roll of his eyes from Gu Chong.

Gu Chong ignored him.

The more you pay attention to Zhouzhi, the more enthusiastic he becomes.

After the driver finished unloading the goods and drove towards the town, only when Gu Chong and Zhou Zhi were left in the back of the truck did they cautiously take out the goods they had brought back from their trip south.

They didn't have much capital, so they didn't bring back much goods either; a small bundle was enough to fill it.

When Zhou Zhi took it out, he was very careful, afraid of bumping or knocking it.

He invested all his capital.

This batch of goods is like the hen that lays his golden eggs; he dares not be careless in the slightest.

"Should we do it the same way as before?" Zhou Zhi asked Gu Chong, tilting his head.

Gu Chong: "Hmm."

Their division of labor has always been like this.

Gu Chong was tall and imposing, with a cold and intimidating face, making him suitable for intimidating others and negotiating lower prices for goods.

Zhou Zhi, on the other hand, is a sly, smiling man all day long. He's a chatterbox, good at sweet talk, and he's the one who attracts and connects customers to sell the goods.

Zhou Zhi smiled and repacked the bag of goods: "Okay."

This trip south was truly made possible thanks to Gu Chong.

Aside from keeping him company, Zhou Zhi didn't do anything else. Now, he's going to have to shoulder the heavy responsibility of selling the goods.

The truck drove fast and arrived in town in the afternoon.

Gu Chong couldn't wait to part ways with Zhou Zhi; he wanted to go home.

Zhou Zhi didn't go with him; he was in town looking for a few people.

Gu Chong walked quickly, and when he arrived at the village entrance, the sun was still blazing.

He turned around and instead of heading straight home, he walked towards the fishpond.

They haven't finished work yet at this time.

Xue Fu is still at the fishpond.

As soon as he reached the edge of the fishpond, he saw Xue Fu dozing with her eyes closed through the open window of the wooden house.

Staring at her peaceful and serene sleeping face, a sudden, overwhelming sense of relief welled up in Gu Chong's heart.

He felt very happy.

Gu Chong smiled and quietly walked in.

He didn't wake her, but sat on the wooden stool next to her, staring intently at her.

After not seeing him for a few days, his gaze lingered greedily, almost tangible, making Xue Fu, even in her sleep, feel a sense of "heaviness."

Xue Fu wasn't sleeping soundly; she just wanted to take a short nap.

I felt a shadow fall on my eyelids, and my eyelashes trembled as if emerging from a cocoon before I opened them.

Her eyes were glazed over, but Xue Fu instantly snapped back to reality when she realized someone was in front of her.

She was scared for a second, but the next second, after blinking and regaining her vision, she recognized the person, and the fear turned into dizziness.

She hesitated: "Gu Chong?"

Has he come back?

Or is it in her dream again?

She blinked a few more times, and Gu Chong in front of her seemed more and more real.

Then I heard him reply, "Yes, I'm back. Xue Fu."

ā€œI’m sorry I startled you,ā€ he said.

He caught the fleeting unease in her eyes.

At this moment, Xue Fu was overjoyed at Gu Chong's return. She sat up from the wooden bed and looked him up and down.

Xue Fu was a little excited: "It's okay, it's okay! You're finally back!"

This is the best example of a long-awaited reunion.

Gu Chong was visibly pleased; his sharp features softened in the afternoon light.

Xue Fu was stunned for a moment. She thought that Gu Chong was just as happy as she was to be back home.

As she stared at him blankly, Gu Chong lifted her arm.

Xue Fu had just uttered an "Hmm?" when she suddenly felt a cold sensation on her wrist.

She glanced down and saw a beautiful watch with a dial inlaid with some kind of sparkling stone and a strap made of bronze leather.

Xue Fu: ?

She didn't react immediately.

A few seconds later, she looked up at Gu Chong and met his burning gaze.
