Chapter 5 Going to the Countryside

Sun Yu pressed down on her lips and explained softly, "The captain sent someone else to find you directly, and I didn't realize what was happening."

“I just care about you, Xue Fu.”

His words were so sarcastic and insincere that Xue Fu felt he clearly disliked the female supporting character, yet he could still pretend like this, which was disgusting.

She couldn't be bothered to pay attention.

"It's okay, it's none of your business anyway. We're not even close."

She now hopes to sever all ties with this sinister and vicious male supporting character.

In Xue Fu's eyes, this person was a jinx and a jinx.

The female supporting character suffered so much, all because of this idiot.

Even though he clearly didn't like it, he still kept the original owner of the body doing things for him.

Xue Fu rolled her eyes without any politeness, then went inside to pack her luggage.

Their conversation had just sparked further discussion among the other educated youth.

Actually, Xue Fu doesn't seem to be that well-behaved; she's quite fiery and has a lot of personality.

The educated youth settlement consisted of only four rooms.

There was a kitchen, a main room, and the remaining two rooms were the dormitories for male and female educated youth.

The courtyard was quite large. Next to the kitchen, the educated youth built a thatched shed for washing up.

Gu Chong placed her luggage in the main room. Xue Fu then moved to the dormitory for the female educated youth one by one.

The dormitory for female educated youth was not small, and although the building was dilapidated, it was kept very clean.

Because we had received advance notice that new educated youth would be going to the countryside, the beds inside the house were set up in advance.

Xue Fu looked at the only remaining single bed, leaning against the wall without a sheet, and her throat tightened.

She had never slept in such a small bed before.

Zheng Peipei's bed was already made, and she was sitting on the bed packing her other luggage.

Seeing Xue Fu standing there in a daze, Zheng Peipei called out to her.

"Xue Fu, hurry up and get ready, we're going to blow out the lamp soon!"

Xue Fu snapped out of her daze and nodded: "Okay."

She also realized that there were few forms of entertainment in this era. And lighting lamps required kerosene, which cost money.

People generally go to bed early.

If they weren't waiting for Xue Fu today, they would have already turned off the lights and gone to bed by now, as usual.

Xue Fu opened her luggage.

The bundle contained a quilt and sheets. She stared at the floral fabric and took a deep breath.

By the way, she's never made a bed in her entire life.

She glanced at the beds of the other female educated youths out of the corner of her eye, observed them, and then began to try.

She was sweating profusely as she made the bed, but the bed was still wrinkled.

Xue Fu pressed her head, preparing to make do.

She rummaged through the other things in her luggage, and then her empty stomach suddenly rumbled.

She felt hungry, and then felt embarrassed because others could hear her stomach rumbling.

The other female educated youths in the same room realized that Xue Fu had not eaten dinner yet.

Xue Fu returned far too late; they had already finished eating.

However, they left her some porridge.

I had just forgotten about it.

Li Jing got out of bed and said to Xue Fu, "There's still some porridge left, I'll heat it up for you."

Xue Fu watched Li Jing get out of bed and head to the kitchen, and suddenly felt a little touched.

No wonder so many people like the female lead; she truly is an angel.

Xue Fu didn't have much luggage; besides a quilt, she only had some clothes.

She traveled light, as her parents were worried she wouldn't be able to carry everything, so they said they would mail her a package when she arrived.

After putting away the clothes, Xue Fu found a small cloth bag in the box.

She opened it and saw a thick stack of receipts and a stack of ten-yuan bills.

She doesn't need to count; she knows how wealthy her family is now.

These banknotes gave her the confidence to survive in this era.

Put the money and tickets away and lock them in her suitcase.

She ordered the remaining items: a bag of dried meat, a can of malted milk powder, and a bag of walnut shortbread wrapped in parchment paper. However, due to the bumpy ride, many of the walnut shortbread pieces had broken off.

In addition to this, Xue Fu also needs to purchase some other daily necessities.

We need to find an opportunity to go to the town or the county seat.

However, considering that the only means of transportation nowadays are oxcarts and walking, she felt miserable.

In the kitchen, Li Jing lit some firewood and put it into the stove to heat up the food.

When Xue Fu arrived, she saw Li Jing staring at Huo Tianjing.

She pursed her lips and called out shyly.

She wanted to take a shower; she was covered in sweat.

Li Jing nodded and pointed to the hot pot next to her: "There's still some hot water here. Go wash up first."

Xue Fu nodded: "Thank you for your trouble."

She thought that if she didn't play the villainous supporting character, she could get along well with Li Jing.

Xue Fu gritted her teeth, picked up the bucket, and staggered to the 'bathroom' that Li Jing had pointed out to her.

Xue Fu felt that she was now able to calmly accept the 'conditions' of this era.

Once inside the bathroom, all she wanted to do was quickly wash away the sticky sweat.

After changing into clean clothes, Xue Fu felt much more relaxed.

However, she discovered that she did indeed have blisters on the soles of her feet. After the white blisters burst, they were mixed with blood. It looked pitiful.

When she went out, Li Jing was still waiting for her in the kitchen.

She said, "The food is heated up, come and eat."

Xue Fu was touched, her eyes shining as she stared at her. Li Jing smiled and beckoned her to come over quickly.

Xue Fu expressed her gratitude and repeatedly praised Li Jing for being beautiful and kind-hearted, making Li Jing blush and dare not look at her anymore.

Li Jing discovered that this female educated youth was different from the others.

She expressed her feelings directly and passionately, which was quite unusual in this era of subtlety and restraint.

Xue Fu said, "You're so kind."

Li Jing lowered her eyes and chuckled softly: "Eat quickly. Get some rest, you have to go to work tomorrow."

The keyword "starting work" made Xue Fu's expression change: "So fast?!"

“Yes,” Li Jing explained the rules here to her, “You new educated youths are on borrowed food rations, and you have to earn work points to pay back to the brigade.”

Looking at Xue Fu's delicate appearance, she felt a little sorry for her: "If you don't have enough work points, you won't get any food rations."

Xue Fu closed her eyes briefly, then opened them again after several seconds, her fox-like eyes looking pitiful and longing.

"Oh, right, there's also cooking." Li Jing pointed to the stove. They had already told the new educated youth about it before, but Xue Fu hadn't heard, so she told her again.

"The male educated youth took care of the physical work of chopping wood. However, the female educated youth were responsible for gathering firewood."

"There was no well at the educated youth settlement, so we had to go to the back to fetch water, and the male educated youth took on this responsibility as well. So we would do more to ensure the three meals a day were provided."

Li Jing said, "We have a shift schedule, which we will revise and repost tomorrow. Just follow the shifts on it."

Xue Fu nodded, but inwardly she smiled bitterly.

Gathering firewood is fine, but the problem is, she can't cook.

She had never been inside the kitchen.

Xue Fu felt troubled and anxious.

She pursed her lips, a little embarrassed: "When you're cooking, could I watch from the side... and perhaps teach me a thing or two?"

Li Jing had a premonition that Xue Fu probably couldn't cook.

However, seeing her positive attitude and eagerness to learn, Li Jing breathed a sigh of relief and agreed.

Xue Fu: "Thank you so much."

What a little angel!

Before Li Jing could finish her meal, Xue Fu saw her yawn and quickly told her to go and rest, saying she would take care of the rest.

Li Jing had some doubts, but with Xue Fu's assurance, she still went back to her room.

Xue Fu was the only one left in the kitchen. She was holding a bowl of porridge and a plate of pickled vegetables in front of her.

She was hungry, but couldn't eat much.

This porridge is very thin, more like rice water porridge.

The kimchi smelled sour, and with the sauce spread on it, it was impossible to tell what kind of vegetables it was made from.

The soup was bland and watery, and it didn't whet my appetite.

Xue Fu can already see what her future life will be like.

She felt a little melancholy, then closed her eyes, picked up the bowl, and gulped down a few mouthfuls of porridge.

We can't not eat it.

Xue Fu forced herself to get used to it.

She still felt wronged, wondering why she was so unlucky to have transmigrated into this world.

She misses her old life.

There was only a small portion left in the bowl of porridge; Xue Fu simply couldn't finish it.

However, there were only a few grains of rice left in the bowl, so she poured it out.

Looking at the empty bowl, she felt somewhat lost.

How am I supposed to wash this bowl?!

After much effort, she managed to find a picture of her parents washing dishes in the original owner's memories. She followed their example and finally managed to wash the bowl clean.

After washing, she touched her palms with heartache and groaned silently.
