Chapter 100 Saved People but Didn't Ask for Rewards

Chapter 100 Saved People but Didn't Ask for Rewards

"It was Dean Liu who said that the large-scale farmers in Nanlin City were not simple, and that even he couldn't get any. I thought they must have connections and influence, so I guessed that they might have borrowed some resources."

"After all, those things aren't something you can just buy anytime, don't you think?"

Du Ruoxia spoke very softly at the end. How could her guess have aroused the man's suspicion?

"How could an ordinary person like you know so much?" The man looked at Du Ruoxia with a serious expression.

Du Ruoxia was speechless, so she decided to go all the way and stare at the man.

She retorted sharply, "Isn't this a normal guess? Delaying the rescue at this critical juncture—what else could it be but human intervention?"

The man was taken aback, seemingly finding no problem with what Du Ruoxia said.

"What's your name? Which company do you work for?" the man continued to ask.

Du Ruoxia shrugged helplessly and let out a sigh. "Du Ruoxia, you don't need to know about my job. My man is a soldier."

Du Ruoxia's answer made the man's face turn awkward. He did want to question Du Ruoxia's identity, but her answer was far too self-assured.

"Should I tell you my man's identity and family?" Du Ruoxia shrugged. "No, I don't know his family. We just got our marriage certificate a few days ago!"

Dean Liu coughed and said, "Comrade, Comrade Du is innocent. He is a colleague of Gao Songbai."

The man awkwardly touched his nose. "I was just asking routinely; after all, it's part of my job."

Upon hearing this, both Dean Liu and Du Ruoxia looked at the man with curiosity.

"Ahem, I came here with my mother to recuperate, but I can't stand idly by when something like this happens. As a member of the Discipline Inspection Commission, I don't condone any corrupt behavior!" the man said with a serious expression.

Dean Liu and Du Ruoxia exchanged a glance. So that's his identity!

"You, you're from the Discipline Inspection Commission? Are you going to start an investigation into them?" Dean Liu blurted out excitedly.

Du Ruoxia was not so excited; she didn't remember any corruption being uncovered in this incident!

"Are you from Kyoto?" Dean Liu continued to ask.

"Yes, my name is Chen Jianping. I'm a member of the newly established Discipline Inspection Commission." Chen Jianping's face was beaming with smiles, clearly satisfied with his position.

"Disciplinary Committee Secretary Chen, you really gave me a fright! Comrade Du was performing surgery on your mother just yesterday!" Dean Liu said with a sigh of relief.

“It’s a work habit of mine to keep pressing any questions I have. I hope you don’t mind, Comrade Du.” Chen Jianping looked at Du Ruoxia apologetically with his hands behind his back.

Du Ruoxia's lips twitched. After all, he was the second-in-command. What could she say? Of course, she couldn't!

"You're joking. You have your reasons for doubting my identity," she said with a smile.

“Yes, I really can’t figure it out. Every guess you made was correct, including the one about Mu Han’s assistant,” Chen Jianping replied with a smile.

Du Ruoxia was taken aback. Good heavens, she knew this person again. Could it be that she knew Yang Zeyan as well?

Du Ruoxia had questions, but she couldn't ask too many in front of Dean Liu, otherwise Dean Liu would accuse her again.

"I am very grateful to Comrade Du for helping my mother. I am deeply thankful!" Chen Jianping suddenly bowed deeply to Du Ruoxia, startling her so much that she quickly turned away.

She realized that this person didn't play by the rules, and she couldn't guard against him at all!

"Please don't flatter me, it was just a small favor!" Du Ruoxia quickly said.

However, she still felt a little guilty saying it out loud. She was no saint, and she dared not get involved in the mess that was the Zhao family.

"That's only right. Don't take my questioning to heart. Everyone has to be investigated in this matter," Chen Jianping explained to Du Ruoxia.

Du Ruoxia knew immediately that this matter would be reported to the capital. She nodded, "That's good. We won't wrong an innocent person, nor will we let a bad person go unpunished!"

"Well said! We should not let a bad person go unpunished, nor should we wrong an innocent person!" Chen Jianping shouted.

Du Ruoxia froze in fright; this person's opponent was probably in for a rough time.

"Are you going to be in Xilan City for the rest of the time?" Du Ruoxia asked Chen Jianping hesitantly.

“Just say what you have to say,” Chen Jianping replied.

Du Ruoxia hesitated, unsure how to express herself. She realized that Xilan City was not as simple as it seemed on the surface, and decided to give Chen Jianping a heads-up instead.

"The old lady is awake!"

Chen Jianping abandoned Du Ruoxia and walked over, with Dean Liu following behind.

Du Ruoxia felt that her task was complete, and she stepped out.

However, when she arrived at the door, the Chen family's bodyguards wouldn't let her out. Du Ruoxia looked towards the ward. Chen Jianping had no time to pay attention to her now, while Dean Liu was also asking about the old lady's health with a look of great concern.

Du Ruoxia sighed and stood by the door waiting, mentally counting down the half hour.

In less than half an hour, the old lady finally exhausted herself and fell into a deep sleep.

Chen Jianping looked nervous and hurried to find Du Ruoxia.

Du Ruoxia explained helplessly, "This is normal. The anesthesia hasn't worn off after the surgery, and the patient needs time to sleep."

Dean Liu also chimed in awkwardly, "Comrade Du is right, it's already quite fast that he woke up from the anesthesia so quickly!"

Chen Jianping was finally relieved, and Du Ruoxia finally found an opportunity to ask to leave.

“You can’t leave, the old lady isn’t better yet,” Chen Jianping said instinctively.

Dean Liu and Chu Ni looked at each other, both expressing their helplessness regarding his request.

"Disciplinary Committee Secretary Chen, the old lady has passed the critical period, you can rest assured!" Dean Liu explained in a gentle voice.

Chen Jianping was a little embarrassed. He scratched his head and said apologetically, "Look at me, I got flustered."

Dean Liu breathed a sigh of relief. If he had to stay with the old lady for another day, his work would have piled up like a mountain. It would have been better to let Chen Jianping investigate him!

"Dean Liu, you go ahead with your work. I'll have someone keep watch over things." Chen Jianping finally relented.

However, he still didn't budge on Du Ruoxia's offer, and Du Ruoxia had no intention of staying.

"I have to go now," Du Ruoxia said, having already spent quite some time in Jiang City.

"So you're already abandoning us after we've served our purpose? You're leaving before things are even over?" Chen Jianping looked at Du Ruoxia with displeasure.

Du Ruoxia's face stiffened. The case shouldn't require her, so why was she being held back from leaving?

"You silly girl, you saved someone and didn't ask for anything in return, so you should let them thank you properly."

"If the old lady wakes up and can't find me, she'll break my legs."

Du Ruoxia was both amused and exasperated, and could only back down, "I'll leave you my contact information. I heard the old lady really wants to see me. You can contact me again then, okay?"

This was the best solution Du Ruoxia could think of; if she kept guarding it, she would really be wasting her time.

Chen Jianping carefully considered Du Ruoxia's suggestion before finally nodding in agreement.

Du Ruoxia practically ran away from Chen Jianping's place, and the people Chen Jianping had arranged to take her also ran alongside her.

After confirming that Du Ruoxia was staying at a hotel, they continued to keep watch, leaving Du Ruoxia feeling utterly helpless and on the verge of tears.
