Chapter 68 is simply a model for family members.
Du Ruoxia returned home, put down what she was holding at the door, and took out her keys.
"Du Ruoxia, you're back!"
Song Hongjiao looked anxious, as if she had been waiting for her on purpose.
"I just went to the library, and Director Xin said you can go to work now," Du Ruoxia told Song Hongjiao.
Song Hongjiao's face lit up with joy, but she quickly changed her expression to one of worry.
"What's wrong?" Du Ruoxia asked.
Song Hongjiao pursed her lips before speaking, "Um, don't be angry, your Gu Tuan went to Xilan City on a mission, he just left not long ago."
Du Ruoxia's face stiffened, and her hand paused as she opened the door, but she quickly regained her composure.
"Song Hongjiao, do you know how to make sweet and sour pork ribs?" Du Ruoxia asked, changing the subject.
"Sweet and sour pork ribs?" Song Hongjiao was puzzled. Can vinegar and sugar be used together to cook a dish?
"Hmm, why don't you do it? Let's celebrate properly, since men aren't in our world anymore!" Du Ruoxia picked up the ribs and waved them in front of Song Hongjiao as if showing off.
"Oh, oh, okay." Song Hongjiao replied with a forced expression.
Du Ruoxia didn't even go into her own home; she turned around and went straight into Song Hongjiao's house.
Under Du Ruoxia's guidance, Song Hongjiao successfully made sweet and sour pork ribs. Although the color wasn't yellow enough, the taste was exactly right.
"Great!" Du Ruoxia gave a thumbs up.
"No way, this is the first time I've ever heard of sugar and vinegar being cooked together," Song Hongjiao said shyly.
"Try it." Du Ruoxia put a piece in her bowl.
Song Hongjiao glanced at Du Ruoxia and only felt relieved to eat after seeing that her expression was normal.
"Mmm, it tastes so good!" Song Hongjiao exclaimed.
She lost her appetite during her pregnancy and tried many different things, but nothing worked. She never expected that this pork rib dish would be so appetizing. No wonder she had a good appetite when she made it.
"Your appetite isn't good during pregnancy, so you can eat some sour foods to stimulate it," Du Ruoxia advised earnestly.
Two pounds of pork ribs was a bit too much, and with the pork rib soup, we ended up with a lot left over.
"What are we going to do with all this? The two men aren't here, and there's so much leftover food." Song Hongjiao was instantly distressed.
“The weather’s been cool lately, so I’ll reheat it and leave it for tomorrow. Try not to eat it,” Du Ruoxia said.
"Aren't you worried about your family's regiment going on a mission?" Song Hongjiao asked, expressing her doubts.
Du Ruoxia smiled and said, "What can I do? I dug this hole myself, but he insisted on jumping in."
Du Ruoxia deeply regretted telling Yang Zeyan about Xilan City. If she hadn't told him, he wouldn't have gone to the military base to ask. Sure enough, asking caused a problem. Xilan City was under the jurisdiction of their military base, and he volunteered to go on the expedition.
"What pitfall?" Song Hongjiao looked at Du Ruoxia in confusion.
"It's not a trap, let them be. You start work tomorrow, I'm going back to the countryside for a few days," Du Ruoxia replied.
Even if Song Hongjiao goes, there will still be some translations to submit, so that Director Xin won't end up with nothing.
Song Hongjiao was surprised that Du Ruoxia, who earned so much money as a translator, suddenly had to return to her hometown. She looked at Du Ruoxia with reluctance.
"What? I'm just going to take care of some business. I'll be back in a few days. It's not like we're going to be separated by life and death!" Du Ruoxia sighed and rubbed her forehead in exasperation.
Song Hongjiao stood there dumbfounded, unsure how to shake off her sad expression, while Du Ruoxia found it inexplicably amusing.
When Du Ruoxia returned home, she indeed found a note left by Yang Zeyan on the table.
[My dear daughter-in-law, this letter speaks volumes about you. I know you disapprove, and are worried about my injuries, but protecting the people is my duty. The mission is urgent, and I haven't had time to say goodbye. Please don't be angry; I will definitely return safely. Wait for me, don't be upset. — Yang Zeyan]
Du Ruoxia looked at his few dozen words, feeling angry but not knowing what to say to him, and finally let out a sigh.
She went out again and headed straight for Commander Xiao's office.
Having been there once before, she was already quite familiar with the place. She was somewhat well-known in the compound, and many soldiers recognized her.
"Sister-in-law, who are you looking for?" The soldier guarding the gate politely stopped Du Ruoxia.
"I'm looking for Commander Xiao, is that alright?" Du Ruoxia said calmly.
The soldier's expression changed when he heard that she was looking for Commander Xiao. He immediately saluted solemnly, "Sister-in-law, what do you need Commander Xiao for? I'll inform him for you."
Du Ruoxia replied with a smile, "It's nothing serious, I just wanted to ask him if Yang Zeyan's life is worthless."
The soldier's face paled upon hearing this; the matter sounded serious.
"Sister-in-law, wait a moment, I'll go report right away." The soldier immediately jogged away.
Du Ruoxia waited quietly, and the soldier returned in less than two minutes.
"Sister-in-law, Commander Xiao said you can go up now," the soldier said respectfully.
Du Ruoxia went straight upstairs to find the person; she knew which office it was.
Commander Xiao was still looking at the documents when Du Ruoxia knocked on the door and went in. He looked up at her briefly and then looked down again.
"She's here!" Commander Xiao seemed to have already guessed that she would come.
"Okay, you go ahead with your work," Du Ruoxia replied calmly, then sat down opposite Commander Xiao.
Commander Xiao took a while to read the document, signed it, and then stopped what he was doing to look at Du Ruoxia.
"Oh dear, I knew you'd come. That kid went on a mission without telling you, and I couldn't stop him." Commander Xiao's head ached whenever he talked about Yang Zeyan.
"Can he leave if you don't approve?" Du Ruoxia asked leisurely.
Commander Xiao's face stiffened for a moment, then quickly returned to a helpless smile.
"Comrade Du, you've wronged me. I didn't approve it. That kid's a stubborn mule. To stop me from approving it, he even talked to his superiors and arranged for him to go instead." Commander Xiao looked completely innocent.
Du Ruoxia's face twitched. "You should be punished for such overstepping your authority."
Commander Xiao burst into laughter, "Comrade Du, I admire you! You're a role model among family members!"
After he finished speaking, he looked at Du Ruoxia, but his gaze seemed to be directed at someone else.
“I need two train tickets,” Du Ruoxia said directly.
Commander Xiao looked surprised upon hearing this, "Train tickets? Where are the train tickets from?"
“Xilan City, two sleeper berths,” Du Ruoxia replied.
Commander Xiao put away his smile and surveyed Du Ruoxia with a serious expression, while the latter remained completely calm.
"Xilan City, what are you going to Xilan City for?" Commander Xiao asked seriously.
Du Ruoxia smiled slightly as she met Commander Xiao's scrutiny.
"You probably already guessed what I'm going to do, I'm going to find Yang Zeyan, of course."
Commander Xiao slammed his fist on the table and stood up abruptly, "Nonsense! This is a mission, his duty as a soldier!"
Du Ruoxia calmly returned the gaze, her expressionless face revealing a resolute look in her eyes.
"Comrade Du, well, I'm saying we should just stay in the compound and wait for him to come back. If you go over there, he'll be distracted." Commander Xiao began to persuade Du Ruoxia.
Du Ruoxia remained calm and composed, showing no intention of backing down.
"Please, I'm begging you, don't make things worse." Commander Xiao softened when he saw that she was unmoved.
"Make trouble? Would you believe me if I said I was going to save people?" Du Ruoxia asked.
Commander Xiao didn't believe it. What could Du Ruoxia, a mere girl, possibly do? She was just a college graduate.
No, she can suture. The military doctor said her suturing skills are better than theirs!
“Even if you know how to suture, you have no ability to protect yourself. Going there risked your life,” Commander Xiao shook his head.
“I can’t just suture, I can also kill people,” Du Ruoxia said leisurely.
