Chapter 1: Kicked Out (2/2)

Qiao Yunni opened her eyes wide in horror, feeling as if her vision was blurred and she couldn't see clearly. She hadn't expected that even this old woman Song had made arrangements; it seemed she was determined to get rid of her.

But she had no choice but to do it. In an instant, a thousand grievances welled up in her heart, almost destroying her completely. A wave of dizziness washed over her, and Qiao Yunni collapsed to the ground.

A pair of hands steadied her.

"Mother, stand up, don't beg them." The resounding voice seemed to pour a bucket of cold water on Qiao Yunni's dazed head, bringing her back to her senses.

She saw that her daughter had gotten out of bed at some point, and was now standing upright, no longer weak as before.

She froze, staring at her daughter in disbelief.

"They don't deserve it." Song Lian'er's cold gaze swept over the Song family members present, including not only Old Mrs. Song and her two daughters-in-law, but also the eldest and second eldest sons of the Song family. Neither of them said anything, but they tacitly agreed. At times like this, they would leave the bad things to the women and let them take the lead.

The Song family was very surprised because Song Lian'er was indeed dying. Although he still had a breath left, he shouldn't have been so full of energy.

Could it be a final burst of energy before death?

What angered them even more than that was what Song Lian'er said.

"You brat, what nonsense are you spouting? Your mother stole food for you, committing a grave mistake. Don't you know that? Don't pretend you don't know. Now that you've eaten it and have the strength, you're starting to badmouth your family," Old Mrs. Song scolded.

Song Lian'er scoffed and glanced around at the villagers at the door.

"Why did my mother go to the kitchen to get food? Because during the days I was sick, I was only half full at each meal. My mother saved all her own food rations. She went hungry and went up the mountain to pick wild vegetables. She didn't dare use the firewood at home, so she crushed them and ate them raw. Otherwise, she would have collapsed long ago. But my mother didn't care about these things. She only hoped that I would get better and that I could have a full meal. She begged Grandma Song for more food time and time again, and even knelt down, but Grandma Song refused. So my mother had no choice but to go to the kitchen to get food."

Is this really how it is? The villagers were all stunned.

Everyone knows that since Qiao broke her leg and became less useful, the Song family has indeed become much colder towards her, but surely they haven't treated her this badly.

"Shut up! Who taught you, you brat, to say such things?" Old Master Song, who hadn't spoken until now, suddenly became furious.

Song Lian'er ignored his presence and continued, "Over the years, my mother has worked tirelessly for this family, doing all the hard work without complaint. She has been planting in spring and autumn, and working on the fields and mountains. My mother is the one who has done the most work. Just half a month ago, she broke her leg, and the Song family started to treat her badly, completely ignoring all the sacrifices she has made over the years. Don't even mention that my mother only took a steamed bun. She deserves a pot of ribs and a bowl of chicken soup."

Her mother even plowed the fields like a man.

The eldest and second eldest Song brothers, along with the old ox from the family, were resting on the side.

A single steamed bun? The fact that they only had a single steamed bun caused an uproar at the courtyard gate.
