The atmosphere fell silent.
"What's wrong? Everyone, did someone bully you?" Qiao Lian'er said.
The beggar's tears rolled down his cheeks, and he choked up slightly.
“I became an orphan when I was five years old and have been begging ever since I turned twelve. I wear tattered clothes that others don’t want, and no one has ever bought me clothes.”
“Me too. When I see children wearing new clothes, I always think, if my parents were still alive, they would definitely buy me new clothes.” The youngest beggar, seven years old, wiped away his tears and cried loudly.
He reached out and grabbed Qiao Lian'er's clothes.
"Sister, you are such a kind person. I will remember you for the rest of my life and I will pray for you for the rest of my life."
Qiao Lian'er also felt a little sad.
Originally, she was thinking of not affecting the stall's appearance, but she didn't expect it to have such a big impact on these children.
"I can't help you much. You work for me, and I'll give you something to eat. Just do your job well. There's no need to thank me or remember me. Go and change your clothes. Oh, and here's a hair tie. Tie your hair up too."
She also bought them the hair tie so their hair wouldn't fall into their food.
The children, holding their clothes and hair ties, obediently went into the house, no longer showing the distrust and resistance they had at the beginning.
It's no wonder they're wary; they've been driven away and scolded countless times while begging, so of course they're wary of people.
When they came out after changing, their hair was all tied up again, and their appearances had changed dramatically, looking clean and neat.
He was starving, his face was pale and thin, and he was in poor spirits, as if he would fall over if the wind blew him away.
Qiao Lian'er led them to the stall, where Qiao Yunni and the others were extremely busy. Under the scorching sun, beads of sweat rolled down their foreheads, and they wished they could use both their hands and feet.
Qiao Lian'er served each of them a serving of fried potatoes and a corncob.
"Eat up, and I'll teach you how to work after you've eaten your fill."
Upon taking the first bite, the beggars were stunned. It was incredibly delicious, no wonder there were so many customers.
They buried themselves in their food and ate heartily.
"No rush, eat slowly, there's more if you're not full," Qiao Yunni said gently.
"Lian'er, these are the young men you hired," Qiao Xiaomeng said.
"Well, we're really too busy. Let them lend a hand, give them food, and settle some wages for them."
The little beggars' eyes lit up again: "We get paid?"
"When we close up shop at dusk, I'll give each of you thirty coins, how about that?"
Thirty coins were enough for ten large meat buns, and the children were very happy.
"Sister Lian'er, we will definitely work hard for you."
Upon hearing a ten-year-old beggar call her "sister," Qiao Lian'er immediately straightened her face: "Why are you calling me 'sister'? I'm over twelve years old, call me 'sister.'"
"Ah, but looking at you, you only look seven or eight years old," the older one said in disbelief.
Qiao Dameng and the others chuckled to themselves.
“I haven’t grown taller yet, but I’m still bigger than you guys,” Qiao Lian’er said. “By the way, what are your names?”
“We don’t have names. We are called Ah Da, Ah Er, Ah San, Ah Si, and Ah Wu according to our age.”
“Okay, from A-Da to A-Wu.” Qiao Lian’er thought to herself, “That’s easy to remember.”
Everyone's lips twitched; this girl really knows how to omit things.
