Song Laosan was settled in the barracks. At dinner, he was woken up by a basin of cold water.
The soldier rudely placed two bowls in front of him and walked away.
One bowl contained spoiled steamed buns, while the other contained rotten and off-tasting millet porridge.
He was exhausted and hungry. When he picked up the steamed bun, he felt a sharp, stinging pain all over his body. He looked down at the water that had been splashed on him and realized it was salty water with chili peppers.
The steamed bun fell, and Song Laosan rolled on the ground, scratching himself in agony.
"It hurts, it hurts so much, I'm going to die, help!"
Having been stabbed in the chest and beaten until his whole body was covered in blood, scratching like this tore open the flesh everywhere, creating a bloody, blurry mess that was even more unbearable.
But no one paid him any attention. Some soldiers stood at the door, watching the spectacle with schadenfreude, showing not a shred of sympathy.
Song Laosan simply banged his head against the wall, trying to pass out and reduce the pain.
Two soldiers immediately rushed in, grabbed him, and prevented him from hitting the wall.

Song Laosan knelt in front of Guan Yuqin, repeatedly banging his forehead against the ground.
